Millions of Chinese-made toys for children have been pulled from shelves in North America and Australia after scientists found they contain a chemical that converts into a powerful date rape drug when ingested. Two children in the U.S. and three in Australia were hospitalized after swallowing the beads.

Well, that's another toy I'm going to have to return.  Thankfully they were going to be Christmas gift so the kids haven't played with it yet.

Not to be mean or anything, but who the hell gives this product to toddlers and stuff? That's kinda odd, considering it is supposed to be for ages 4 and up. Also, it says that a 10 year old was sickened by them as well. At 10 years old, you should know better than to put small plastic objects in your mouth. And it says that the kids only got sick after swallowing large quantities of them.

I know it's bad that they can turn into a variant of a date rape drug, but some of these parents need to learn some common sense when getting toys for their kids as well.

I am hoping with all these recalls that there will be no more toys on the shelves made in China so parents will HAVE to get their kids toys made in other countries like...say...the U.S. perhaps? Anyone who has been reading the political boards know that this is a BIG issue with me-and it should be with everyone else, too. Why? Because the cooperations have been selling our jobs to the Chinese for their cheap labor and in turn selling us cheap junk that lately has been very dangerous. As I have said in other threads when all is possible

I love CNN's utterly false headline:

The toys most likely are coated or made with this substance, the precursor for GHB. Add water and voila! you have GHB (in varying concentrations depending on pH).

Cat is correct.  We need a higher standard on manufacturing and the only way to monitor production is in the US.

The proximity of children's toys with date rape drug really grosses me out. 

Even if you don't swallow the pieces, you still absorb some of the chemicals through your skin.  Pretty nasty.

but they won't eat their vegetables!!!

In Australia Aqua Dots are marketed as "Bindeez" and even though they have been recalled apparently not many people are handing them in.  Parents are saying that their kids love playing with them so much they are going to continue to let them play with them but stress to the kids how toxic they are!!  Maybe the parents might be thinking of popping a couple themselves.
