PRINCE FANS FIGHT BACK AGAINST ATTACKS
In an extraordinary, but not unfamiliar move, the rock legend Prince is using an army of lawyers to launch attacks on his own fans.
Several of the largest web communities dedicated to the artist have received notices to cease and desist all use of photographs, images, lyrics, album covers and anything linked to Prince's likeness.
It is our opnion that these threats are not made in an attempt to enforce valid copyright as Prince alleges in his threats, rather we believe they are attempts to stifle all critical commentary about Prince. We strongly believe that such actions are in violation of the freedom of speech and should not be allowed. Prince claims that fansites are not allowed to present any artwork with Prince's likeness, to the extreme that he has demanded removal of fan's own photographs of their Prince inspired tattoos and their vehicles displaying Prince inspired license plates.
Prince's representatives have requested that the fansites provide them with "substantive details of the means by which you propose to compensate our clients for damages..."
The owners of the three largest fansites supporting Prince: www.housequake.com, www.princefams.com and www.prince.org have come together to fight back to what amounts to an injustice to the fansites and the very fans who have supported Prince's career, many since the very beginning nearly thirty years ago.
It is their hope that Prince will reconsider his position and allow these fansites to continue their existence without constant threats from Prince and his attorneys. Should this not be possible, the fansites are fully prepared to defend their position in the proper court of law, as well as fully prosecute any claims to which they are justly entitled.
The owners of housequake.com, princefams.com and prince.org acknowledge that, while Prince is entitled to control of his copyrights, it should be within the law. The law clearly provides for displaying of images of a celebrity's likeness for newsworthy events or matters that are considered to be public interest. All three websites feel that the photographs and/or likeness displayed on their websites clearly fall within the public interest category. Additionally, the use of photographs is legal based on the fair use doctrine, i.e. the displaying of album cover art, or the collage headers created by website members using a variety of different photographs.

For princefams.com: Endre Adolfsen and Jonathan Nice

Napoleon Complex. :D
Apparently, he also went after a mother who had posted her little boy dancing to one of his songs on YouTube. It was pretty lame. I still like his music, but I'll be damned if I'm going to support him in this stupidity. Go fans!
Let's see if I get sued for this. ::)

Napoleonic complex to be sure, and a generous helping of narcissism and megalomania.
As much was evident in 1983! It worked for a long time and made Prince an R&B icon and a very, very rich man.
The wave has crested fame and he's been on the way down for 15 years. A more optimistic interpretation is that he's an established pop star famous for a certain body of work and he's got a loyal fan base. The same thing happened to James Brown, the godfather of soul himself. Brown got kind of crazy and mean as he grew older. Similar thing is happening to Prince. What James Brown didn't do was go out of his way to alienate his fans. He might have threatened his employees with a rifle for using his private lavoratory, but he still gave all his heart to his fans.
Prince is acting more like a corporate executive fussing over the company logo. If his fans abandon him, he deserves it!

The latest from the Prince forums - if Prince is doing this to his fans because he needs money, then he's f*ed that up because now, just to spite him, fans aren't buying any concert tickets, or CDs, or DVDs from him. Anything that means he gets money, fans wont be buying until he decides to stop this nonsense.

Well, I'm sure to anger a few people with this but... here goes.
Prince is, and always has been, a jerk. Is anyone out there really surprised he'd make a move like this?? I mean c'mon! I hope this bites him in the ass so hard he cries on TV to try to win his fans' love and devotion back. Watch that clip of him from one of those early (the first perhaps?) American Bandstand appearances... Dick Clark asks him how many instruments he plays... I bet ol' Dick wished he never asked that question. Prince says something about playing 100s of them and then acts like he doesn't want to really talk about it. You know damn well he and his management probably made such a huge deal about this ability and then when Dick asks him on the show he acts all (mock) humble and evasive. If you ever want to see a moment of painfully bad TV, check it out. J-E-R-K
It always makes me laugh when that whole "he plays ALL the instruments himself, man!" stuff comes up. Shoot, Stevie Wonder AND Todd Rundgren were doing the one man band thing YEARS before Prince came along.
Just my two cents
I kinda, sorta liked "Raspberry Beret" when it came out but most of Prince's stuff leaves me cold. I think 70s Stevie Wonder, P-Funk, Tower of Power, War, Average White Band and EWF kick his scrawny, whiney *** up and down Soul St. any day.

No no, I actually agree with you. Prince has always struck me as someone who has a massive ego. I love his music and the movie "Purple Rain", but you could even tell in "Purple Rain" that he was a pompous a$$. It's unfortunate that he's actually proven me correct.
You consider him Soul? I thought he was more Pop than anything.

No, no... I don't consider him soul at all. That's kinda another point I was making about him. I was just naming a few groups that seem to me to be a lot funkier and soulful than 90% of Prince. I could've said "up and down Funk St" or "Groove St." or whatever. You're right.. he's pop but I guess some would say he's in other genres too.

I liked prince and his music and he's a good guitar player, and I really enjoyed Purple rain, the movie and especially the music, but if this current news is true, then I'll have no problem not playing any of his music at all.
so is this story true? did Prince really sell out? is he mental or what?

Oh, I do have to say that I do love the song When Doves Cry-but that is the only Prince song that I can say that I love. Others are ok.

The one thing I don't like is how he prances around the stage while he touches himself. I don't know if he still does that, but it used to creep me out. The main reason I hate 'Kiss' so much is because he sounds like he is molesting himself while he is singing it which creeps me out even more
His 1982 album '1999' - GOOD
His 1991 hit 'Cream' - EXCELLENT
all of the rest of his work - MEH

Prince may or may not have a Napoleonic complex, but you gotta admit that he gets more than enuf nooky for a man twice his size.
So he's got that going for him. Which is nice.

In a musical sense, he was very groundbreaking and no one else has ever really sounded like him. He was one of the major black artists that crossed over to MTV and made urban music palatable to a white pop audience. Even his radio songs were more cutting edge and unique, with all the off center sexual subjects - sometimes more thinly veiled than others, but he was a great lyricist nonetheless. He also had alot of influences of other kinds of music without actually being them per se (i.e. that loud guitar solo on "Let's Go Crazy" was very Jimi Hendrix-esque). "Little Red Corvette" was also a pop/rock song that was ahead of its time. It didn't sound like 1983, it could've easily been late '80s or even today if it were recorded slightly different.
Sorry I know I kinda get carried away with "reviewing music" just because I'm so into it! ;) I wish James (courtandspark) was still around 'cause I know he was a huge Prince fan, and he could go into better detail than me. As far as the topic, yeah that sounds overboard to me. I know he's also cracked down on his music on YouTube. I'll have to think about it for a bit before I decide my full opinion though.

Prince is just weird. It's kind of odd how he was willing to release an album for free, but he's extra serious about enforcing a ridiculously stretched version of intellectual property law.
Something tells me his former recording label is more behind this than Prince himself, but given his eccentricity and arrogance, I wouldn't put it past him either.

He's an eccentric person, no question, but in different ways than Michael Jackson and Madonna. He's more strange when it comes to the business side of himself, like the Artist Formerly Known As identity he took on. I've heard he's quite shy and not that personable sometimes too, so maybe that's where some of it comes from. Like an alternate way of expressing himself.

Actually, he never really took on that identity. The media gave him that name because they didn't know what else to call him. I don't think that symbol had an actual name, but if it didn't, it became 'The Artist Formerly Known As' LOL

Lots of us (record store clerks) called the symbol "Squiggle", and Prince (at the time) was referred to as TAF-KNAP (The Artist Formally KNown As Prince).
Its sad that he's decided to go this way, I'd like to try and defend his actions as I'm a diehard fan from way back (70's, yes he's been around that long), but I can't reasonably begin to justify this attack on both his fans and music base...

Yes... Price was indeed hroundbreaking and one of a kind. Tunes like Purple Rain, When Doves Cry, When You Were Mine, Lil Red Corvette, Delerious, and Darling Nikki were standouts and sounded nothing like anything else on radio then... or even now.
Back then people complained about Prince's suggestive lyrics. But they were not suggestive, they were explicit and left no doubt about what he was talkin' about. Which added to his uniqueness albeit while causing alot of his records to be bleeped out on commercial TV.

That was a business move to get around some provision in a contract that he found objectionable. Turned out to be a very good move to hold on to some creative rights that would have reverted to the company at the termination of the contract. That is why he stopped using it after a certain time. Once the contract ran out he was able to go back to being Prince again. Brilliant business move actually.
This stuff that is going on so normal for artists. There have been far worse transgressions by major(and minor) artists that this barely merits a backward glance. If anyone feels that this warrants boycott I would suggest they so the same for any artist caught doing similar or worse, soon there would be nothing left to read, no music left to listen to, no pictures on the wall, no movies left to watch.
Get over it.

It's not like I'm not going to listen to his music anymore. But as for supporting him financially, he can forget about. I made a point of buying his music instead of downloading it because I wanted to support great talent. I've probably spent thousands on him buying CDs, DVDs, tickets and signing up to his official fanclub. This is how the mofo repays me and every other fan who has supported him?
But enough of the negative. Let's talk positive. I noticed a few comments on his music in this thread. I'm one of those fans who can't get into anything post-Batman. Batman was his turning point record IMO. It was his first semi-decent album. Some songs were good, other were terrible. Every album before that was golden. Every album since has been sub-par. The only post-Batman album I have ever liked and actually listened to since the first time I bought it is The Rainbow Children. But nothing's worse than Planet Earth, his latest album. I think he has lost all his creativity. But he's still amazing live. I have to give him that.
But IMO he's officially done now. His rejected his hardcore internet fans. The only people left are casual fans who don't check out his forums but would check his concert out if it came to their town. I don't think he has the support to keep being successful anymore. And he probably is ready to retire. Or else why would he do something that would surely upset a lot of fans? He must be willing to lose them because he no longer wishes to work as a performer/recording artist. He's going into retirement, and you don't need a fan base to do that.

We could start with any who charge more than say....$20 for the best seats in the house. Ticket prices are a kick in the teeth to music lovers. Fans should also stop paying money to see(because you really don't hear) music from a stadium. Whose idea is it that it is worth it to pay to sit in the bleachers watching them sing and play on a bedsheet tied to a pole?

You're not wrong about that. Ticket prices are ridiculous. It's such a scam. But that's one thing Prince did that I admired. He sold tickets to his London shows this year for £31.21. Then he lowered them even more when it got closer to the concert dates and he wanted to fill the seats. I remember fans who saw Madonna in London telling me the tickets ranged from £80-£160 depending on where you were seated. That's too much IMO. Way too much. If Michael Jackson ever tours again I would love to see him. But I'm afraid I'll have to sell my house or something to do so. But I do remember a lot of people thinking tickets to his HIStory World Tour were really well priced considering who he is. I can't remember how much I paid to see him. But I still have a house and I'm not in thousands of dollars of debt so it must of been affordable.

We could start with any who charge more than say....$20 for the best seats in the house. Ticket prices are a kick in the teeth to music lovers. Fans should also stop paying money to see(because you really don't hear) music from a stadium. Whose idea is it that it is worth it to pay to sit in the bleachers watching them sing and play on a bedsheet tied to a pole?
many fans that love going or would like to go have been priced out of the market. that's another pet peeve of mine too. when you have to pay $50 bucks just to sit on the lawn, something is wrong. CSNY charged over $200 last year for seats up front in the pit which is basically just the front 5 rows or so and I was appalled.

That's why I like the classic artists that may not be as well known as some other people. They have smaller shows in smaller venues, and they don't charge ridiculous prices. In 2002, I paid $20 to see Brenton Wood, Brenda Holloway, and Al Wilson at the Monterey County Fairgrounds. It was completely awesome and you could see what was going on. It helps that I like all these artists. :D
This past summer, Sting and the Police were playing at Wrigley Field. The most expensive tix were $1000 and up. Hell no. :o

hell no is right! I agree on the small events, & I've seen some good shows at samller venues that cost $20 at the door. I saw Blue Oyster Cult at Slim's in San Francisco for 20 bucks and it was great. so you pay huge bucks to see these bands, and then they charge $30 for a souvenir short sleeve tee shirt and much more for long sleeve. I'd like to know how much Prince tickets were when he was touring in his prime

I'd like to know how much Prince tickets were when he was touring in his primeI don't know how much his tickets were in his prime, but I know that in the 80s, if he didn't fill a venue, he used to get his people to stand out the front of the venue he was playing and ask people walking by if they wanted to see Prince tonight for free. The after the concert he had a habit of driving around looking for a good little night club. The he'd go in and ask the owner if they mind if he and his band played a few songs. So if you were lucky to be walking by a half-filled Prince concert venue, or in a night club that Prince liked the look of when he was driving around, you got to see him for free.

Ive never been a HUGE Prince fan, Im more a Michael Jackson fan really...But I do enjoy most of his singles...I bought the triple disc The Hits/The B-Sides release from about 10 to 15 years ago and I enjoyed about 25 of the 56 songs (including I Love U In Me). I enjoyed the entire Diamonds and Pearls album and the double CD with the song Thunder on it is also awsome (like I said, not a huge fan and dont really know the name of this album)...As for anything after, say, 1994...I cant say Ive ever really heard much of it, so dont know if I like it or not. Ive never been one of these so called music lovers who simply dislike a song or dont give a song a chance because of who the artist is, so Id be willing to give his music a chance...Though now I doubt Ill be buying anything of his if this is true.
As for ticket prices...Ive seen lots of arena acts and lots of so called 'past it' acts in smaller venues and lots of up and coming acts in smaller venues, and I can tell you that the smaller venues are the best. Seeing Silverchair play on a small stage in the carpark of Newcastle's (Australia) ABC Radio station was amazing. Seeing 10CC play their hits in a small club was awsome as well as many others...However, I do enjoy arena shows. I recently went and saw Fall Out Boy at the Acer Arena in Sydney and they were brilliant (of course, I was in the front row with my 8 year old daughter and my 30 year old wife, so that helped). Ive seen Michael Jackson in concert twice (1987 and 1996) and the shows he put on were brilliant, and both times the tickets were very reasonable ($60 and $90 Australian). Ive also seen Bon Jovi live in 1989, as well as Poison, Guns N Roses (1988 and 1993 possibly 1992), Paul McArtney (1993), Hall and Oats (1983), Robert Plant and others and in most cases Id have paid more than I did for the tickets. Of course, in all cases except the Paul McArtney concert I was very close to the front, which helps.

^ LOL... Prince, Prince, Prince.... :D
Speaking of which, one of the Lasagna Cat(Garfield tribute vids) has Manic Monday on it... He had to take it down, but he uploaded it again with the audio muted.
But someone else posted the video with the audio, but it's probably gone now.

Ha ha, I love his music but what an idiot!
Surely Prince must realise that the only reason he got anywhere in the first place was because of his fans. As a few people mentioned here, Prince is well known for his 'Napolean Complex' and increasingly erratic behaviour.
I also thought Prince's version of the song 'Kiss' was rubbish and that Art of Noise/Tom Jones improved it considerably.
Not sure if many people know this but he actually wrote the songs 'Manic Monday' for The Bangles under the pseudonym Christopher Tracey and 'Nothing compares 2 U' by Sinead O' Connor.

Yeah, I knew that. ;)
Good question. ;D ;D
Oh BTW, another song of his that I forgot to mention was Manic Monday-done by the Bangles. Yes, that was Prince using the name of "Christopher".

I do agree with you about him being an idiot.

I'm suspicious of these claims; first of all, it's put out by the website owners (boo-hoo -- fan website? get a life), so it's just one side of the story; second, I go to one of the websites, and one of the first things I notice is that "a forum for bootleg discussion," is featured as one of the main attractions of the site. Gee, can't imagine that Prince wouldn't be thrilled about that. After all a download is a whole .99 cents -- who can afford that?
Yes, Prince is weird (so what), and a megalomaniac (his talent, his prerogative), and may be shooting himself in the foot (that takes no money from MY bank account), but I still take this with a grain of salt. Plus he's always surrounded by hot women singers, so I MUST give him the bennie of any doubt.
:P
