yes, i felt it as i was sitting in a plush cushiony rocking chair at home in El Sobrante, probably about 65 miles away from the epicenter and i felt the chair start bumping, rumbling, and was wondering what it was and then the ceiling fan started to sway a little bit and I felt the ground shake, but not very strong from where i was, but i thought it lasted about 15 seconds. my daughter Julie in her dorm at San Jose State University said it shook and rumbled very strong there as the school is near downtown which was only 9 miles from the epicenter.  no big deal, it's California  8)  but not a bad idea for us to be prepared for bigger and possibly catastrophic disasterous conditions if a giant one were to occur

If you girls had felt it in Ohio & Pennsylvania, we'd be in BIG trouble

so maybe a good idea for members to have other means of contact just in case. I remember when the boards were down for a couple of days that I emailed a few people and that was cool.

Semifore is what sailors (or...I dunno...maybe non-sailors too) use...it's like coded communication with flags and stuff.
This isn't a good picture example but it's the best I could find.

edit:  Apparently I misspelt it (what else is new), it's supposed to be semafore not semifore.

I felt it the other night too. I'll admit ever since 1989, it had been a casual fear in the back of my mind living in Northern California, the possibility that another one could hit. So much was going through my mind in that first two seconds, like....is my stuff gonna get messed up, destroyed, or much worse, are any of us about to be hurt and/or killed? All I could actually say was, "Oh sh*t! Earthquake" really loud though, lol. My parents and I (for anyone that doesn't know, I still live at home) just stood in a safe place 'till it died down. Thankfully it was just for a few seconds and nothing was even misplaced. The epicenter was around Alum Rock, too, which is only about 10-12 miles from me. That probably explains why it seemed much, much more centralized and violent than the Loma Prieta quake from a North Bay perspective (even though that one was alot bigger actually).

See, this is one thing I hate about not having a time machine! You don't know if stuff like this is lurking just around the corner. That's always a passively scary thought.

On a serious note though, as far as really big quakes are concerned, I don't think they normally hit the same area more often than about a quarter century, if not more. There's a good chance the Bay Area won't have to worry about it seriously until the 2020s, but like I said, it's hard not to feel worried to an extent. Just like tornadoes for the midwest in some respects.

I have never been near a real earthquake before, I think you lost your trust in Mother Earth when all you have to stand on is sudden withdrawn from you.

The company purchases raw cane from different parts of the world, not from Hawaii, anymore (too expensive).  Sometimes the sugar comes from Australia, Africa, South America, the Phillipines, the Carribbean, any number of Pacific islands.  Sometimes the sugar we get is good, sometimes it's of such poor quality that it will shut the plant down when we're trying to process it, like last year...

Hawaiian sugar and Cuban sugar is still considered the best...
