Subject: Rank the 00s years
Written By: sonikuu on 09/15/07 at 2:02 am
Simple topic: rank the 00s years in the order of your preference. You can rank these depending on the pop culture of the time, your personal life (I know the status of my personal life effects my view of pop culture, as you'll see), and anything else that can impact your perception of the year. Since 2007 isn't over yet, it'd be preferrable if you wouldn't rank it. Here are my rankings.
1. 2000 - Great year and the last full year of innocence in my childhood. Nostalgia definitely plays a big part here in my preference for this year.
2. 2005 - An amazing year overall. Unfortunately, the pop culture fell apart a bit towards the tail end, but 3/4 of the year was pure awesome.
3. 2004 - Overall, a great year that only got better as it went along. This year would be ranked higher if it weren't for the fact that this (and 2003) was the time period when Modern Rap was its peak in popularity. My personal life also drastically improved this year.
4. 2006 - An underrated year in my opinion. It got off to a TERRIBLE start, but in the end, the year turned out to be a rather good one. Unfortunately, the first 3-4 months were pure crap and, as a result, give the rest of the year a bad name and drag it down in the rankings.
5. 2001 - Eh...pretty good year, but I can't say I'm overly fond of it. The second half unfortunately drags down the year for me because of 9/11 and my personal life going down the drain (loss of innocence from 2000?). First half is good though.
6. 2003 - A pretty halfway decent year in retrospect. However, I have little attachment to the year. I don't hate it, but I just have no particular attachment to the year outside of certain aspects (like Adult Swim).
7. 2002 - Sorry, but 2002 wasn't a good year for me personally. I have no nostalgia for this year and I doubt I ever will, outside of certain aspects (Adult Swim, video games, etc.)
Theres my rankings. All of the years had there good points, but when looking at the overall picture, these are my rankings. Unfortunately, my personal life at the time shapes my view of the year. Hard to be nostalgic for a year when your life sucked in that year.
So, how about your rankings?

1. Anything that isn't within 2000-2007 is good
2. Therefore, 2000-2007 SUCKS
:D

The top 6 were all at least decent, 2006 however overall was just terrible.
1. 2000
2. 2001
3. 2002
4. 2003
5. 2004
6. 2005
7. 2006

I'll rank them just in terms of the pop culture, music, ect.
1.2000
2.2001
3.2002
4.2005
5.2003
6.2004
7.2006 :P
So far, 2007 has been a much better year than last year. In fact, if it ended today, I'd rank it in the top 4.

4. 2006 - The first year I realised I had a social phobia. A lot better than 2002-2005
5. 2005
6. 2004 - A pretty halfway decent year in retrospect. I already had social phobia. However, I have little attachment to the year. I don't hate it, but I just have no particular attachment to the year outside of certain aspects.
7. 2003 - What? Such a indifferent year... and no good music at all.
8. 2002 - Sorry, but 2002 wasn't a good year for me personally. The first full year without my ex-classmates and friends. The year my grandmother died and I got a social phobia. I have no nostalgia for this year and I doubt I ever will. I prefer to forget it, and I am very happy that it will never come back!
I copied some details from the first poster, but they are tottaly true for me. I've also lost innocence in the second half of 2001!

Hmm...
2001
2000
2005
2003
2004
2006
2002
2007
Why?
2001-I graduated Home School and I started my Volunteer job. I was on my way to get a GED and despite 9/11, it was the best year of the 00's.
2000-It started of with a good start and I was having a good time with the Youth Group at my church as well and despite having no 90 degree weather, summer was nice.
2005-I had a job and I was on my way to get ready for the world and I felt mature.
2003-I was going to school and that was the first year I got to drive (I still don't drive right now and I'm the oldest.)
2004-I lost my job, summer was bland (no 90 and up degree days), and my mom left my dad, but they are now together again after a year.
2006-I lost my second job because it was a joke and I still can't find a job. It was going to get worse.
2002-I got my first real job and my GED training, but it got bitter when Social Services came and told my family that we had 10-week custody for 4 kids and we kept the youngest longer.
2007-It was disatorus. I felt like I wasn't ready for the world and never will be, I wound up in the hospital, my grandfather died, my brother's fiance left him, and I still can't find a job. I've also been blaming God because of this and I'm tempting to see a Fortune-Teller.

From my previous post:
2000
2004
2005
2007
2001
2003
2002
2006
It was very difficult to rank the years because I had to weigh them with both my personal life and pop-culture. Basically the top 4 were my better years, and the bottom 4 were my not so good years. I'll describe them more in detail:
2000 - I had just turned 21. I was at a bar/club almost every weekend. Pop-culture was good too. A lot of good music came out that year which they played at the clubs. A lot of good movies came out that year too. It also seemed the new millenium was off to a great start not knowing the upcoming events of the following year.
2004 - The pop-culture is what ranked this year higher than 2005, with a lot of good music that came out. After 2003, it was like a break of relief for me. In the summer I took a road trip up to Northern California and I bought a condo. I had an optimistic view of the future at the time. The only thing I don't care to remember is my ex who I was dating at the time who I later found out is a pshyco, lol.
2005 - Music wasn't as good as 2004, but a lot of good movies came out this year. There was also a lot of new TV shows that premiered in the fall that I got hooked on. In Nov. I took a trip to Europe, one of the best vacas of my life. I also met my wife-to-be that year.
2007 - The year I'm getting married (Oct. 6) and going on our honeymoon. It was also an improvement from 2006 even though I'm still working in the same place, but I'm transferring at the end of the year. Pop-culture is also an improvement from 2006 with better music, movies, and TV shows.
2001 - 9/11 was a tough part, and the weeks following were depressing knowing that things aren't going to be the same, like travelling on a plane with increased security. Pop-culture was also kind of bland. I'd almost rank it lower than 2003 or even 2002.
2003 - There was a period of about 3-4 months when a lot went wrong in my life. I was also feeling bitter and disgruntled during most of the year. The pop-culture however is keeping me from ranking it last. I also have a few good memories from that year. Back then my views were more conservative and I supported the war in Iraq (what was I thinking? lol)
2002 - The first half was just horrible. I was suffering from insomnia on many nights, and having dating woes (which could have contributed to my insomnia). That is one reason why 2003 was better because I avoided dating alltogether. I don't care for the music that came out that time mainly because it brings back bad memories. The second half was better though.
2006 - Much like 2003, I was bitter and disgruntled most of the year. I had many disputes with my co-workers due to personality conflicts, and occasional confrontations with people outside of work. There was a lot of stress as it was the beginning of the fears of an upcoming recession. The real estate market started to decline, which affected me because I bought a condo in 2004 (which at the time being optimistic thought that it's a good investment). Pop-culture wise, it was very bland and dull. Not many good movies or TV shows came out that year, and in music, I had to hear "YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL" by James Blunt about 50,000 times on the radio. Good personal memories are few and far in between, and my relationship was rocky at the time (almost broke up a few times). It was a lot of growing pains. I did however get engaged that year. Also, two more good things that came out in 2006: The Nintendo Wii and Playstation 3.

2000 - a very good year. teen pop ruled the world.
2001 - the last year I saw my real friends, the last year of teen pop. the first half was better though.
2006 - a good year, since I realised I've changed for bad in 2001-2002. The year I decided to change my life for good, to make it similar to what it was till 2001.
2005 - huh.
2007 - not a good year, but, at least I realised I have a social phobia since 2002.
2003 - not a bad year, but not a good one, too. no good music
2004 - blah! no good music
2002 - my grandmother died, awful classmates, sinositus and social phobia. teen pop was already gone.

I wasn't alive in 2000 and only a fetus in 2001. I was born in 2002 and can't remember 2002-2004, and I only remember 2005 vaguely. 2006 was the first year I have vivid memories of.
In terms of the 2000's years that I can remember, the best year would have to be 2007. I started Kindergarten which was a huge transition for me, and I remember for my 5th birthday when I got a big dollhouse that I wouldn't stop playing with. I was honestly a bad kid back in 2007 though because I would purposely annoy kids for fun. I would block some kids view when the teacher was reading a book and showing pictures.
Pop culturally, 2003 was the best IMO. It's my most favorite 2000's year for music and I personally thought it was a big improvement from 2002.

You def picked 2005 for the summer, thats why I put it high on my list LOL 2005's summer was like an adventure.
It was hard I had 2002, 2006,2005 all as leading contenders, The atmosphere with Junior high in 2002 even if it was a little snowy
it BEATS hands down any years of the 2000's. I was going to place 2001 higher (because the 2001-2002) school year is my favorite
but the first half of 2001 was boring to me.

I was too old to be emo I think lol. I never dressed like that. It wasn't my style. Peasant blouses and tunics were popular in 2005. I wore them a lot!

I choose 2009 as that was the the first full year of the best era of my life. I was in secondary school and me and my best friend at the time won a talent show and an arts award that year for making an animated film. I was happiest in 2009 out of all the 2000's years really as I also loved it pop culturally, I just found it better then the mid 2000's.
Also I put 2002 8th because unfortunately I was at my first primary school (I changed in mid 2003) where I got bullied a lot so it kind of taints my perception of 2001 - early 2003

Now that I lived through 2008 and 2009, here's an update to my rankings:
2008 - #2 below 2000 and above 2004. It was a green year overall. It was the first of 3 years living in Japan, the best years of my life. The pop-culture was good too, lots of good music. At the time I was happy about Obama getting elected (little did I know what the future was going to bring).
2009 - Above 2007 but below 2005. Even though I was in Japan, the news about our dog being put down happened at the beginning of the year, plus I separated from my wife I married in 2007 and started the divorce process. Also Michael Jackson's death was sad news for pop culture. At the same time, a lot of good things came out of that year too, and I had a lot more fun once I became a single American male in Tokyo :)

For personal life, 2007 would be the best. However, I would say that the best 00s year overall in terms of pop culture was 2003.

Yeah, it's more personal than it is either cultural or even political. Although in terms of pop culture at the time, 2001 would've been on the Top 5 with 2004, 2005, and 2007 in my personal opinion.
