Subject: Rihanna tops UK chart for ninth week

Written By: Philip Eno on 07/15/07 at 3:44 pm

R&B star Rihanna has claimed a ninth week at the top of the UK chart with her single Umbrella.

The 19-year-old, from Barbados, held off a challenge from Black Eyed Peas star Fergie, whose Big Girls Don't Cry rose six places to number two.

Yay for Rihanna, I like the song though it's getting old. It is probably getting time for a new number 1 over in the UK and here in the United States as well. Hopefully "Big Girls Don't Cry".

Personally, I am tiring of it.

BTW, do you think the rhythm for Fergie's Big Girls Don't Cry and Enrique Iglesias' Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song) sound similar?

Wow I never thought of that before, but now that I think about it, they are quite a bit similar. I think Big Girls Don't Cry's rhythm kinda sounds a bit like More Than Words by Extreme as well.

I will listen out for that next time it is on.

It's a good song, but it does get tiresome rather fast.  It's always the #1 hits that get radio overkill :(

Maroon 5 with 'Makes Me Wonder' is still tops in Canada, but Fergie is at #2 with 'Big Girls Don't Cry'.  Possibly next week, Fergie could have her first ever #1 hit in Canada (according to wikipedia, she's already topped the charts with it, but that's wrong information)

She's topped the new Canadian hot 100 chart which combines canadian airplay and digital sales, I'm guessing that she's number 2 on the airplay chart.

I had no idea Billboard listed a Canadian Chart.  It even has little Canadian Flags for the Canadian ones.  I like this! 8)

With this new Billboard Chart, there are now 4 charts in Canada all used to measure hits.  It's hard keeping track lol

R&B star Rihanna's song Umbrella is the longest-running number one single in a decade with 10 weeks on top.

What is the longest running UK #1 in history?

I believe it is "Love Is All Around" by Wet Wet Wet, which was #1 for 15 Weeks from May 29th, 1994 - September 11th, 1994

Actually, let me correct myself.  "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" by Bryan Adams was at #1 for 16 Weeks from July 7th, 1991 - October 27th, 1991

It also spent 7 weeks at #1 in the U.S.

The record with the most weeks at Number 1 is Frankie Laine's "I Believe". At a total of 18 weeks, it topped the chart on three separate occasions (all in 1953).

At that time I was predicting that Bryan Adams would be the record for the Christmas Number One that year.

^
That Christmas no.1 spot was taken by Queen, with 'Bohemian Rhapsody' ... , who'd died on Nov24 that year. It was there for 5 weeks. It had also spent 9 weeks at No.1 back in  1975. As it was on the charts still in 1976 and 1992, it became the only UK no.1 single to top the charts in four different years.

I just went to Google Search "longest number one record uk" and it came up with the message:

Did you mean: largest number one record uk

Largest would imply by total sales. Longest would generally be talking about total weeks .... consecutive or non-consecutive.

That 18 weeks will take some beating!

As for 'Wet wet wet's ' placing ...  a quick look at my reference book tell's me it was famously deleted from sale,  one week before equalling Bryan Adam's record of 16 CONSECUTIVE weeks at no.1

Why anyone would do that ....?! ??? Seems like a major 'duh' a bit like that company not signing the Beatles!

It was Marti Pellow who took the decision to the delete the record because he was fed up with people complaining about it.

Umbrella was #1 here in Canada too, but it didn't last for 9 weeks that's for sure :o

Anyone who holds a long running #1 in Canada will have a tough time defeating Elton John whose 'Candle in the Wind 97' spent 35 consecutive weeks at #1 (45 weeks in total) on the Canadian Singles Chart

I know Umbrella dropped to #2 in the US ever since that Hey There Delilah song came out.
