Subject: Man flies to wedding a year early

Man flies to wedding a year early
A teacher flew home to Wales from Toronto in Canada for a wedding, only to discover he was one year early.
Dave Barclay, 34, mistakenly thought Dave Best was marrying on 6 July 2007 after he e-mailed him at the start of the year and started making plans.
It was only when he arrived back at his mother's in Wenvoe near Cardiff he realised he had travelled 4,000 miles for a wedding 12 months away.
"I am a year early - yeah, my mates are loving it, aren't they," he said.
Mr Barclay, who has been teaching in Toronto for three years, admitted he had assumed the big day was this July when he received his friend's e-mail.
"I occasionally come home for weddings and my mate, Dave Best, e-mailed me at the start of the year to say he's having a wedding - July 6," he told BBC Radio Wales.
"So I booked my ticket, paid £500 to fly into Cardiff, got the old suit cleaned, the goatee trimmed, the head shaved - I was going to be the belle of the ball."
The teacher added: "I called his mum to find his number and then I called him up and I said, 'When and where is this wedding? It's in a couple of days and I'd just like to know where I'm going.'
"He said to me: 'Mate it's not this year, it's next year - 2008 not 2007."'
Once he realised his mistake, Mr Barclay said a handful of other oddities began to make sense, like the fact that his friend's mother never mentioned the wedding when he called her.
He said he had deleted the original e-mail sent by his friend.
Asking the time
"He just said July 6th and I assumed it was this year because if you tell the guy July 6th, they're going to think it's this year."
Instead, he blamed his girlfriend who he said "usually takes care of that kind of things".
His friends back in Wales are now ribbing him asking him the time and showing him newspapers.
But Mr Barclay admitted he had not been able to tell his friend the total truth about what happened.
"He said to me you didn't come home specially for the wedding did you and I lied and said no. And he said: 'Thank God for that, I thought you were going to charge me for the cost of the (plane) ticket and the present then.'
"Well, at least it's assured me a mention in the speech next year, I reckon."

I read that a little while ago on cnn.com
Do you think the groom will reimburse him for at least some of his expenses since he is the one that didn't put the year in the e-mail?

Nah, but they'll have a good laugh about it for years.
It's funny as hell, he must feel a right twat. ;D

It really wouldn't be my fault if they were the ones who forgot to put the year of the wedding in their letter.

First of all - If you read the article, you'll see the date was included, but he deleted the e-mail and could only remember the date, not the year.
Second of all.. they're your friends. You're not going to sue them!! That's insanity. If you were that desperate for the money, would you not just talk to them and explain.. I've said before and I'll say it again, Kill all the Lawyers today! That way we can rid ourselves of the sue happy mentality that's ruining the community ethos we used to have.

Where does it say that? ??? All I saw was this part:
"He just said July 6th and I assumed it was this year because if you tell the guy July 6th, they're going to think it's this year."
and
He said he had deleted the original e-mail sent by his friend.
Doesn't say he forgot the year.
And all I would sue them for is the amount I wasted getting ready. That's if they don't let me borrow any money for at least the plane trip.

Yeah, they mention that the proper date was in the original e-mail, but the guy deleted it.
No, it's just ridiculous to even consider suing a friend over something so trivial and humorous. I suppose it's a matter of prerogative, if you value the friendship you have (and clearly by flying all that way for a wedding the guy does) you're obviously not going to sue your friend, it's insanity (not to mention a waste of a judge's time). If alternatively, you value the few hundred bucks that much then I don't suppose there's much point attempting to use reason.
I didn't actually mean to even make an issue here, but it's just ridiculous for that to be your first reaction "Oh dear, we appear to have had a mix up, I'd better sue."

If they don't even bother lending me some money to pay back for the wasted airline trip then there probably wasn't much of a friendship to begin with so not much of a loss there. :-\\
Btw where does it say he forgot the date? I keep rereading the article but it doesn't say anything about him forgetting. It just says that the letter that was sent to him didn't mention the year.

Obviously a simple misunderstanding. Still if these guys were close enough that the teacher was going to fly all that way to see his friend get married, you'd think that they would've talked often enough to where this mix-up never would've happened. Also, who the hell invites people to their weddings by e-mail??? Every time a friend or relative of mine has gotten married I've received a formal invitation in the mail about two months in advance that has the exact time, date (including the year) and place of the wedding, as well as a request to RSVP a month in advance. There's a reason for following proper etiquette when it comes to weddings, and that's to insure that things like this never happen.

If I was the teacher I'd certainly be at least a little pissed off, but not to the point where I'd be willing to end a friendship over it, and taking someone to court is certainly a good way to do that.
Still, as I mentioned, I place a good share of the blame with the groom for not sending out a formal invitation through the mail, and I think it would only be right if the groom would maybe take up a collection with his friends to at least partly pay for the teacher's airfare to Wales for the wedding next year.
Oh yeah, and if the teacher does wind up flying back to Wales next year he'd better not have to pay for a single drink the whole time he's there. ;)

Right, I could understand that, especially on a teachers salary ;D.
You sue big companies that allowed their products to maim you.. not your mate who was dopey enough to forget to tell you when exactly he was getting married.
Oh.. and last time I went to a wedding I was an Usher and my mate called me up about a month before and asked if I'd do it.. then invited me to the wedding. But then again, this is the same man who once decided to go on holiday so caught a bus to the airport with his passport and a rucksack full of clothes and came back 2 weeks later after neglecting to tell anybody he'd been to Spain.

Yup.
I'm all for frivolous lawsuits against big companies, because I'm not going to be hypocritical and sit here and say that I wouldn't try and get everything I could out of them - Money for nothing is always good.
But to sue a friend. No.. never, I mean, never, because a) you'd end up costing them far more money than whatever it was, was worth and b) the rest of your friends would think you were a total twat.

It's not really that big of a deal. If he cared about the money I wasted from his own mistake then there wouldn't be any problem.
Man you guys are getting so upset over a hypothetical comment. It's called making random comments on a forum. You said that the groom wouldn't pay back his friend so I said I'll sue them. It's not like I would actually do that to a real friend and I doubt someone would be that much of an @ss to not help their friend after he wasted money over a mistake HE caused. I don't think I'm even old enough to file a lawsuit yet. lol

How could you possibly want to sue a fine upstanding man like Atticus Finch?
