Subject: The current state of music in 2007: Is it better or worse than it was in 2005?
Written By: tv on 06/10/07 at 5:43 pm
Is the music in 2007 better or worse than the music that came out in 2005? I myself thought 2006 was like the 1990 of music in that 2006 had no identity, wasn't memorable and was just a flat year for music.

Yeah, the second half of 2005 and 2006 were a real lowpoint - you know it's not going so well when one of the biggest, most identifyable songs is "You're Beautiful" (which would've been okay if it hadn't been so overplayed, lol).
I think it's a little better now. Stuff like "Makes Me Wonder" by Maroon 5 and The Fray will probably be a taste of late '00s music.

In Canada, the music is getting better. Country and Alt/Rock is weeding Rap and Hip-Hop out of the chart completely, making radio more enjoyable for everyone, as rap/hip-hop isn't everyone cup of tea

No difference since 1998 other than the downfall of nu metal and the popularity of emo (aka alternative lite)

IMO, I haven't really liked too much of any of the music of today (2000 and up). :-\\

I agree with you about 2006 being like 1990 in music (dull years which followed the innovative styles of 2005 and 1989). On that same note, 2007 feels like 1991 in that it's an improvement after a crappy year. I've been noticing a new style of sound in the new pop and hip-hop songs that have been coming out. A lot of them have an electronic sound (e.g. "The Reason" by Nelly Furtado, "Last Night" by Diddy, "Glamorous" by Fergie, "The Way I Are" by Timberland).
There's also a lot of good house music playing in the clubs this year. Have any of you heard of Miguel Migs? He's a house club DJ. His CD that came out this year was very impressive. It has somewhat of the style of New Order's old music.

You forgot the downfall of boybands. those haven't really been around since 2001 or 2002.

I really don't listen to a lot of today's music, except for maybe Maroon 5 or Daughtry.

To answer the question of the topic, whether it was better or worse than 2005, it's hard for me to say. It's about the same. All I know is that 2005 and 2007 are both better than 2006. Whenever I think of 2006 all I can remember is James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" song that was overplayed.
