Subject: Man Claims New Sleepless Record
Written By: Philip Eno on 05/26/07 at 7:23 am
A Cornish man says he has broken the world record for sleep deprivation by staying awake for 11 days and nights.
Tony Wright, 42, from Penzance, was trying to beat the Guinness world record of 264 sleepless hours set by Randy Gardner in the US in 1964.

I can see why Guiness discontinued keeping/backing records on this particular feat.
I would surmise that some methamphetamine addicts probably break the record on quite a regular basis...
"During the record attempt, Mr Wright noticed his speech becoming incomprehensible at times and colours appearing very bright."
I once stayed up for 110 hours (no naps), but I can say it's something I never want to do again - by the end of day 4 I was somewhat delirious, suffering from auditory and tactile hallucinations... no drugs involved. Extreme stress prompted such sleeplessness.

That is not as difficult as it seems. Hollywood nightclub owner extraordinaire, Adel Nasrallah, a.k.a. Eddie Nash, also a reputed mobster and drug distributor in the early 1980's, was known to go for two weeks without any sleep. During the day he would be freebasing cocaine nonstop, and at night he would do cocaine/heroin "speedballs". Several people noted that "Eddie never slept".
Eddie is now out of the nightclub business, as he sold the legendary Seven Seas venue for about $35,000,000 a few months ago.

I would like to see the world record for staying awake the longest....while listening to Crosby Still and Nash.

Breaking a record like this is stupid. You gotta sleep. On several occasions, when I have had trouble sleeping, I choose not to sleep, and end up paying for it the next day .. feeling woozy, having sore itchy eyes and dozing off in places where it's pr obably not a good idea to fall asleep

No one would be able to last 20 minutes. Throw in Neil Young, and I could maybe last about half a day lol

I suppose you can get all technical over the definition of true 'sleep', as I've read stories of people not properly sleeping (they somehow 'sleep' while they're still awake) for up to 5 years, but 11 days seems alot for a normal person. Personally, I don't think I could last more than 48 hours with sleep, unless there was something to keep me up.

I don't think I could ever do that...even if I drank a lot of coffee. In fact, I don't think I've ever even been awake for 24 straight hours. :o :-\\

I agree with the general sentiment that breaking a record of that nature is one of those type of records that you just have to ask "Why". . .certain things you don't want to be known for. . .like "Worst Driver", "Largest Person", "Worst Criminal Record". . .you know, like back in High School when we were given titles, someone had to get "Class Clown", a few people wanted it, but most people hoped they didn't. . .
I personally have stayed up 3.5 days, but more as a necessity because I was stuck working at a 7-11 for 24 hours straight, went home to sleep--but my neighbor was being loud, then 8 hours later, without sleeping went for another 24 hour shift and got stuck another 8 hours because my relief never showed up---the paycheck made it worth it. . .afterall was said and done--I slept for about 17 hours when I did sleep and it's something I hope to never do again.

I did once stay awake for about 3 days.
I got up really early in the morning, drove to London, got on a flight, got to the US, went drinking.. drank all night, went to a party the next day, went drinking again.. stayed up 'doing stuff' went drinking again the next day and evening... eventually dropped.. couldn't even walk, just flopped. ;D

Give this man a badge and the key to the city. 72 hours awake with alcohol is quite the feat!
Sleep deprivation is a great method of torture. After you've got somebody awake for 48 hours they become confused and highly suggestible. Ever see "In the Name of the Father"?

No I haven't, what's it about?
Well, I've got a pretty high alcohol tolerance level, when most folks are falling over drunk I'm generally pleasantly merry.

I'd recommend it for anyone in a university dorm environment. Make sure there are no cars involved, and that you're always within walking distance of home. Get up at 0800 on Wednesday, get the assignment done before hour 56 (close of business on Friday). Go to a party on Friday night, don't touch a drop of alcohol, and drink all the caffeinated soda you can get your hands on.
Don't expect to get anything productive done that weekend. That's fine -- you should have gotten all your work done by Friday night. The hallucinations after dawn (hour 72) on Saturday will be most rewarding. Any time between the end of the party and the magical 72-hour threshold are best experienced while playing WoW or some other MMORPG that demands constant interaction... and so that you can scroll through your own logs on Monday and see just how incoherent you were. You'll probably crash between hours 72-96, and be just fine by Monday.

Yes, I was alluding to the British police tactic of keeping suspects--especially IRA-linked suspects--awake for days on end. You can see in the movie, after they've deprived Conlon of sleep for a few days all it takes is for the inspector to whisper,
"I'm going to kill your Da' '
And Gerry goes hysterical. It's a great way to break people down.
