Subject: The Black Snake Moan Countdown Thread
Written By: Tia on 02/28/07 at 8:44 am
two days until the release of the first kim richards movie in seventeen years. naturally, i'm excited, and unless you hate america, you should be too.
make sure and see it again and again and again. and did you pick up your copy of the 2-dvd "devil dog: the hound of hell" like i told you? buy some for your friends as well. KR needs your financial help. her LA ranch home is only 6000 square feet, modest by beverly hills standards, and her daughters are reduced to having to wreck paris hilton's BMWs because they evidently can't afford fancy cars of their own.
won't you please help?
www.moanmovie.com
actually, if we assume the first screening will be around 11 am friday EST, we're at t minus 49 hours. synchronize your watches.

Kim Richards in a theatrical release movie with big stars. It's been long overdue, but when will she get a starring role again?

signs are unclear, check again later.1
apparently she does a good job in it so maybe she'll get offered more roles. particularly if you picket the theater!

it's supposed to have lots of good music in it. and christina ricci is pretty much 90% naked for the whole thing.
as for more roles for kim richards, it's a sad fact that once women hit their 40s it gets raelly hard for them to get roles. sad but true.
my math comes up with T minus 39 hours. all systems go.

Not sure what to think of this film...kinda thought that after Snakes on a Plane, Sam L would stay away from any movie with "Snake" in the title. ::)
Just what is the reason that Christina Ricci is running around in her underwear anyway (no complaining mind you) just trying to figure out what this film is really about...
Only thing I've been able to tell is that the soundtrack is killer, solid blues and old deep south r&B...

the idea is apparently that christina ricci's character is a kinda white trash nymphomaniac because her mom (who kim richards plays, as kinda an evil villain, which i think is gonna be supercool! evil kim, yeah...) is all negligent and her dad or somebody used to molest her. and so she goes to a party, gets all wasted and bangs everybody in sight, ends up getting taken advantage of and beaten up, and sam jackson's character, who has this whole sordid past that i think involved him killing an ex-wife or something, decides to basically capture christina ricci but so he can try to save her soul by playing her music to give her spirit something to connect to other than self-abuse.
it's gotten mixed reviews but i'm optimistic -- i think the director made the movie deliberately kinda off-the-hook weird because he wants to turn off people who wouldn't get it anyway. movies are often best when they're weird, and kim richards herself has been in some really weird, campy, culty stuff, so it fits pretty good.
T minus 38 hours and 31 minutes.

And what, pray tell, is wrong with "Snakes On A Plane"? You have violence, a plot, and Samuel L. Jackson kicking all kinds of ass. What more do you need?
Oh yeah, I want to see this movie. And you know there is going to be all kinds of hell breaking loose because a Black man has a White woman in chains. :P

yeah, a part of it is playing with the whole black-man/white-woman thing. the "black snake moan" thing kinda is obviously about that, but it's also in blues lore like having a spell of total despair. i was reading up on the whole backstory, it DOES sound hella interesting.

it was a good review, though (i mean, well-written), they should just put a warning on the top if she's gonna talk about the ending.
i think i'll catch the 10:30 tonight. get a nice buzz on and take the metro to ballston. a local who also digs KR is gonna maybe come see it with me again on sunday eve. it.
was.
so.........
WONDERFUL.
(i_idiotically_tried_to_break_the_rules_by_using_profanity)' multiplex i saw it in, and people clapped at the end. when do people do that? it's so messy and weird and passionate and smart and bizarre and awesome. and i swear i'd be saying that even if they cut all kim richards' scenes out of it. i'd be pissed but i'd still like it. she gets a really small part, like 2 minutes tops, but it's all pivotal, and... krak, totally out of the park. she's the sheesh. period.
samuel jackson is great as always, although his fake-me-out guitar playing could use some work. it's close, but you could tell he wasn't actually playing. whatever though, i'm obviously a hardcore guitar schlubb, if it weren't for guitar i'd wither up and die. it LOOKS like he's playing but it's not close enough to convince a player. which is hard as hell to do.
thing that stunned me? christina ricci was... absolutely stellar. i was shocked. everybody's all... oh, she runs around in her underwear! it's so hot! and she does, for about the first half hour and it's totally... not hot. it's really sad, she's this poor pathetic kid who's so messed up she can't even keep her pants on and the movie totally plays it that way, right? she's very big-eyed and sad and totally absorbs the camera, i was stunned at how good she was, because to be honest with you, i never thought she was that talented.
and another really bright spot, there's this kid who plays... christina ricci's boyfriend goes off to iraq and this kid plays his best friend, who makes a play for christina ricci after he ships out, and he makes a play for her and when she cuts on his size he beats her up... totally evil, and whoever this dude is, awesome actor. definite bright spot. "how do you think i know where everything in her house is?" that's his big line, when you see it, you'll know what i mean.
okay.
bad stuff.
justin timberlake... he's real pretty, and you can tell he wants to be an actor, and he's probably better than I'd be in the role, but... he's not an actor. he tries and he almost makes it, but... no dice. he looks weird and uncomfortable and it's just not there. and there's this preacher dude who's AWFUL and he gets lots of screen time, and you get a sense he's the uncle of somebody in the casting department or something, he's also somebody who just should be doing something other than being in movies, yeah?
and there are parts that are just embarrassingly weird and bad, particularly in the beginning when they're spelling out the premise of the movie, which is, as you know, absurd, right? like, i'm getting upset cuz the audience is laughing at the wrong parts and i'm all, no! no! give it a chance! but i think the director did this on purpose, he's trying to alienate the people who wouldn't get it anyway, and setting up the people who can, teaching them the language that they're gonna eventually have to know to get the message of the movie, which is that people are effed up in ways that there isn't any ordinary way to describe. like, all the characters in the movie, the main characters, are good people dragging so much crap around with them that they're basically all caught up in unhealthy cycles -- christina with her acting out her childhood sexual abuse, justin timberlake's character gets the sweats whenever he runs into anything stressful, and sam jackson's character went through this hardcore marital dilemma way back and he carries all this hurt around with him... and that's what the movie's about, is these three characters converging and trying to play their various pathologies off one another to find a way to help themselves and help one another, so to really do that justice you have to show them acting like basket cases (like, um, so many of us on this board do... yours truly included...) so... you have to set people up for some bad wackiness basically, to spell that stuff out. and people who just wanna be cool all the time, they're not gonna get it.
oh man. it was so so good.

looks like i might not be seeing it again till tuesday. i gotta go to work AGAIN and then there's some talk of going to a roller derby in pennsylvania. :o
i can't believe people clapped at the end. they were laughing at it all the way through and then at the end, they clapped. i think that pretty much summed this flick up. sloppy as hell and loaded with passion. just the way i like em!

When I saw 'Hannibal' in the theatres, after it was over, the audience was clapping. I still wonder if they clapped because it was a masterpiece, or because it was finally over. lol
What's the point of clapping after a movie is finished? It's not like the actors can jump out of the screen, and take bows, well unless maybe you're watching 'The Purple Rose of Cairo' or 'Last Action Hero' :D

so crappy snowy cold-ass night here but i couldn't sit in the house any more so i went off to see it again... theater was totally empty! they played it just for me. there was hardly anybody in ANY of the theaters, actually. cuz the roads are so slippery.
anyway... even better the second time. i even warmed to justin timberlake a bit (although i DID just typo "justin timberlack." ;D i just think there woulda been better people to put in that role.)
it's so good (this time i typoed "it's so god"), i'm hoping it goes to the cinema 'n' drafthouse so we can go in a big group and drink lots of beer. i'm thinking ... cult phenomenon.
