I'm with you.  A little extreme.  He had the kid in a headlock and squeezed until he died.  I think that this quy wasn't what one expects when one hears "elderly"  Yeah the kid was scum, but I think the geezer had fun killing him and that is even more sick.

How do you know the "geezer" as you so delightfully called him, had fun killing him?  Did you ask him?  If I'm walking down the street and someone grabs me, whether their intent is to rob me, rape me, or murder me....you best believe I am doing everything and anything I can to prevent any of those things from occurring.  If that means I have to kill you to ensure my safety, then so be it.  It's not like this elderly man just randomly attacked this guy and killed him.  How do we know that youth wouldn't have killed that elderly man? 

Quite honestly I'm stunned that people are reacting negativly to this.

I would venture that this "elderly" guy was pretty buff and knew exactly what he was doing, and got that "release" while doing it.

I love when they have a thing on TV, when some 16 year old kid gets shot or something and everybody is up in arms about it, then it transpires that said 16 year old was shooting off at some other guy who just happened to be a better shot.

as yall know i'm pretty easygoing about most things but that stuff just makes me nuts. i've never been mugged (*knocks furiously on wood* *hmm, that doesn't sound so good*) but i've had friends who have and it haunts you for life. if you mug somebody -- honestly, i don't give a good goddam what happens to you.

on the other hand, i remember this story once of a chick i used to work with, she comes in and she's all freaked out, i'm like, what happened? she's, i got mugged! so i maced the guy! i asked a friend who was there and she says, oh, denise is full of it. it was some homeless guy asks for some change, she freaked out and maced the bejesus out of him, basically sprayed him with mace for like, 30 seconds straight, he falls to the ground in agony and she's still macing him, all the while crying in a panic and screaming rape. it's like, wait. who victimized who, exactly?

He shall be inspiration to all Senior Citizen who feel they have to put up with being victimized because they're old.  The old man is now a poster child for the Grey Panthers and the AARP. :)

if someone held a gun to someone i knew, i would have the intention of kicking their ass. also, if the old man hadn't killed him, the other muggers probably wouldn't have run away.

Sounds like the mother of the assailant should have taught him better while she was raising him instead of complaining about what he gets after trying to rob people.

I think it's great that a 70 year old man was able to not only handle, but convincingly defeat (i.e., kill) an armed attacker 50 years his junior.

There most certainly is!  They've done some fine work.  The organization got more press in its early days, probably because the Black Panthers were all the rage ("radical chic," you know!)

I'm usually opposed to violence in any non-self defense (or protecting others) situation. And even then, I'm opposed to excessive violence.

That being said, I really applaud the man - especially in his 70s - for doing what he did. He couldn't have known what was gonna happen if he didn't intervine. I don't think he was trying to kill this dude purposefully, just get him unconscious. Sure, it's sad the mugger died (even though he was a scumbag), but given the alternatives at the time, I don't think there really wasn't a better way around it.

I also think, with the older man being in the military, he probably felt it was his duty in a sense, to protect everyone else - probably being the strongest and best trained to handle a situation like that.

My local newspaper today ran a story about our local serial killer, Edward Surratt, who killed 10-12 people in the late 1970's.  Prior to this he had been in and out of trouble with Johnny Law, for robbery and child molestation.  It is too bad that nobody got that sumbich in a choke hold back in '76.

I've read a couple other stories that the elderly man was an ex Marine.  Obviously he was trained in self defense and was just reacting.  Besides, when you're in your 70s I have a feelilng that three young men with guns and knives is quite a threat.
