Subject: the tides have turned in sony's favor.
Written By: annonymouse on 02/09/07 at 2:57 pm
in the past, sony has always been trying to urge their own format into beating whatever format was new and cool. like when sony tried to beat vhs with laser disk. but now, it seams that sony has finaly won a format war with blu-ray. blu-ray is so far dominating hd dvd. almost every movie production has signed to blu-ray. the only exception being universal who is still sided with hd dvd. this a huge surprize to me. i never thought blu-ray would make it. although a double-layer blu-ray disk can hold up to 50 gigs, a standard blu-ray disk can only hold 25, while a standard hd dvd holds 30. for this reason, and for the fact that hd dvd has a more familliar name, i thought hd dvd would win. it seems i was wrong.

This news about blu-ray having most of the support is about 2 years old. HD-DVD is outselling blu-ray right now actually by a pretty good margin. If it keeps doing so, the studios have no choice but to jump over to HD-DVD. PS3 has turned out to be a sinking ship.

My question is .. where does all this leave regular DVDs?
Blu-Ray and HD DVDs are stupid, cause unless you have an HD TV, they are useless. Regular DVDs will suit me fine

DVD owns the market for a minimum of the next 5 years or more. It will take a while. Both formats might fail because it will take so long for most people to get HDTVs that a better HD disc format will come out in the mean time.

well, the movie industry will, for the next few years, ween itself off of dvd's. just as it did with vhs's. first most movies were only on vhs. then, it started to be "now on dvd and VHS. and eventually, vhs was completly ignored. you raise a good point. not many people even have hd tv's. but soon, the'll be cheaper. and soon, 720p, or even 1080p will become the standard tv resolution, rather than 480p. confused?

It wasn't just the laser disk. Sony originated the "beta" format for video tapes, and we all know how well that went. JVC had the VHS format, and ended up walking all over them in the market place. If it wasn't for the success of the Walkman, I don't really know if they would have still been in business to create the Playstation.

yes, and now they might fail with the ps3 too. it's really rather sad.

I hope DVD never dies. I'm still trying to convert my VHS into DVD, and i'll be damned if I'm gonna go through that with DVD to HD DVD. lol

3 years? Yer off your rocker. lol
HD DVD and Blu Ray discs sell for an average price of maybe $32, where as regular DVDs sell for around $24. Is it really worth the extra $7 or so to get better sound and quality? To me, it's a waste of money, just like the PSP Movies.

you mean you don't like movies on the go? lol! trust me. the new formats (or atleast one of them) will catch on. you have to remember, that originaly, dvd players were a thousand dollars. now you can get one for less than 50 bucks. my family didn't get a dvd player until they were 100 buck at blockbuster. but we still got one right?

These new formats will catch on yes, but paying $30+ for a movie is just too expensive. IMO no movie is worth that price.
As long as a movie has a clear picture, and has sound that I can hear, that's all I care about. DVD does all that, so why should I spend all this money to upgrade to movies that I already own? lol

i'm saying that eventually, the price will go down. and you'll have to upgrade, because eventually, the dvd format will be ignored.

It won't totally be ignored. HD DVD and Blu Ray players will have to support the original DVD format, cause there are many people out there (like me) who will refuse to give up on DVD

that's what people with vhs players said about dvd. and their format got support for a while after dvd came out. but eventually it was ignored. it'll happpen. trust me.

Every single HD DVD/Blu-Ray player will play DVDs.

yes, but soon, every production company will stop releasing dvds. it will happen. it'll take some time, but it will happen. just as vhs was replaced with dvd, one of the new formats will replace dvd. but we've gone a bit off topic haven't we? the format war is hd dvd vs. blu-ray, not hd dvd and blu-ray vs dvd.
trust me though, one of the new formats will innevitably take over the market.
