Subject: Bob Barker is Retiring

Written By: Roadgeek on 10/31/06 at 3:34 pm

Do not adjust your computer, this is the real thing. Bob Barker is retiring from The Price is Right. :( I have received official confirmation from USA Today. Go here to read the article: http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2006-10-31-bob-barker_x.htm?POE=LIFISVA

This sucks  :(, that show will never be the same without him.

I agree... Mr. Barker is such an institution, it will be hard to find a proper replacement for him...

Remember when someone tried to charge him with sexual harassment?  How many contestants have manhandled him over the years?  Hope he enjoys his retirement. :)

truly the end of an era... 50 years on TV is amazing, the fact that he's still doing it at 83 is as well

You mean you've never watched "The Price Is Right"?

Uh, maybe a few times when I was out of school sick with nothing else to do but watch the tube and hope the fever goes down.  I'm just not a game show kind of guy...except for "Jeopardy" (even though Alex Trebek is a total doojbag), and "Family Feud" with Richard Dawson because it was about the cheesiest thing in the known universe!
;)

Wow.

This is kind of like when Johnny Carson retired. He's just always been around, and once he's gone you really miss him, so I'll have to make a point of watching the last few episodes of The Price Is Right (a show which has remained almost completely unchanged since I first started watching it in the 1970's).

They'd might as well just end the show after he leaves.  Bob Barker is the greatest game show host in the history of television, and no one could possibly fill his shoes.

Plus he kicked Happy Gilmore's ass.  ;D ;D ;D

They will have to retire the show.  Nobody can host The Price is Right but Bob Barker (though Tom Kennedy did a good job in the 80s)

I'd like to give a little shout-out to Bob Barker.

Bob, thank you for entertaining America for 50 years, doing a great job on The Price is Right for 35 years, and entertaining me on my television for my whole 16 year life. You are truely a great man Bob Barker and I will miss you on my television once you're gone.

"Family Feud" went on wthout Richard Dawson, but it wasn't the same show.  They'll find a replacement for Bob Barker, but his retirement will take the wind out of the sails!

I think I was confusing Bob Parker with Bert Parks (classic "Miss America" pageant host) who died about 15 years ago!

So true, that is why I should go out and try to go on The Price is Right while I still can.

Daytime game show television will never be the same.  Bob Barker is a class act and there will never be another Barker.  He laid the groundwork for all who followed.  :)  8)

Heck, he's given out more free stuff than even Oprah.  ;D

I have been watching Bob Barker for as long as I can remember. This was going to happen eventually, and we're very blessed that his health has allowed for us to enjoy him for 35 years! I am glad now he can retire and rest. But, he will be deeply missed.

That's a bummer, even if we knew it had to happen some time. Barker is definitely one of those "TV fixtures" if you know what I mean.

I hope PIR at least stays on in reruns for awhile (although it still wouldn't be the same). I'll bet they'll retire the show. Whenever anyone hosts something for that long, they're sorta permanently associated with it. When Robert Stack died in '03 ( :( ), I think there was a consideration for Unsolved Mysteries getting a new host, but it never happened. He was a part of that show, too.

Yeah, I started watching in 1996 when I was bored that Summer. Other than pop cultural references, or fashion styles of people in the audience, you could barely tell a difference between that show in the '70s and now (based on old clips I've seen).

Bob Barker is a cool guy who definitely wouldn't be replacable. But given the popularity of the show, I'd say it's also possible they might get a new host and change the style of the show so it doesn't entirely feel like the new host would be "replacing" Bob. Kinda like how America's Funniest Home Videos changed the set and all when Bob Saget left.

'96? I've been watching it longer than that. The first time I can remember watching it was in November of 1987. I was 7 years old, home from school for two weeks after my tonsils were removed. I had to stay home so I could heal up; my grandma spent the day with me and we watched game shows together in the morning. TPIR is the only daytime game show that has survived all these years...and I have no idea what, if anything, will take its place. :-[

I have an interesting story about TPIR I might have told before.

On November 27, 1989, the day I was born, the doctor was watching TPIR while I was being born. I was born at the exact same time Rod Roddy yelled "Come on Down!"

My earliest memories of TPIR date back to about 1993 or 1994. I was a fan even back then when I was 3, 4, or 5.

Great story, RG. 8) I don't remember hearing about that before (or if you did mention it, I must've missed the thread) - that's the kind of thing nobody could plan, even if they tried.

You could say TPIR really is in your blood.

Oh, I knew about it/watched it on occasion before then, but that was when I became a bona fide fan. I watched alot of TV in the mid '90s (I wasn't a couch potato or anything, just when I was at home after school, for instance, I was usually glued to the set), and got really into game shows in general. I instantly liked Bob, and was surprised to find out his age (early 70s then), he never seemed to act like it. I figured he was 60 or so in 1996.

If he was, then he woulda been born in 1936. He was born in 1923, which made him 73 in 1996. He will be 83 this December. :)

In my early life, I usually watched it during summer vacation or winter break (whenever I was off school). I think I became a bona fide fan of the game when I was about 9 (in 1989); by then, TPIR was one of only two daytime game shows on (the other being Family Feud with the late Ray Combs).

Bob is the empitome of cool. I remember watching him many moons ago...before he quit using hair dye.

Everything about TPIR is big, so I can see now why I liked it so much as kid; big, colorful set, loud audience/constestants and lively music. If there's one they changed about the show that I don't like, it's the fact that Bob doesn't use the old school ultra-skinny mic that he had for so long. Oh well. Hats off to Bob!

I was farming around on YouTube when I found this clip from Bob Barker's first season of The "New" Price Is Right in 1972. It's amazing how much the show has remained basically the same since then. Plus, back then you could get a brand-new 1973 Chevy Nova for, well, I don't want to give it away... ;)

By way of comparison, here's a more recent clip. Kind of long, but the end makes it worthwhile.  Bob gets pissed! ;D
