Subject: The problem with top 40 radio

Written By: Fred on 09/28/06 at 1:03 am

At work, I am forced to listen to the same "popular music" radio station everyday. For the most part I don't mind a lot of the top 40 music, but here's where it hits me. They play the same songs every single day! sometimes the same song two or even three times a day! That disgusts me. Nearly every single one of these songs are so overplayed it makes me sick. It seems as though as soon as a station gets a new single they feel the need to play it constantly. Is it just me or does this annoy anyone else?

Yeah I agree that is a problem. I hear "Buttons" by PCD still being played over and over again. "Promiscuous" was played to death too, but that's just how it is I guess, that's how the songs are big hits, they play them over and over again.

CLEAR CHANNEL.

I hardly listen to Top 40 radio anymore.  Most of my listening habits are on classic rock/oldies stations or the smooth jazz station.

I think they've always sort of done that (I remember in 1988, the song "Shattered Dreams" was on, like every station! I liked the song as a kid, but I got tired of it for awhile). I agree though, especially with Clear Channel having control of terrestrial radio, it's even moreso now. I'm just now starting to enjoy some '02-'04 pop songs that were so freakin' overplayed a couple years back (i.e. "Drift Away").

I don't really listen to the radio all that much...I hate hearing the same songs over and over again. I tend to listen to oldies/classic rock stations...but they also play the same songs. I listen to a lot of cds when I am in the car.

I haven't listened to the radio regularly probably since the mid 90s, but from what I hear in store speakers and radios wherever I go places, it's usually the same songs I hear.

When that song "Drops of Jupiter" by Train came out few years ago, everywhere I went, I heard it in just aobut every store.  I still hear it everywhere.

I pretty much listen to the "soft rock" stations. :D If you think about it, that's kinda equivalent to what an average pop station was in the '80s (alot of what's out now makes Phil Collins and Hall and Oates seem pretty soft in comparison).

Classic rock stations are cool (although some of them play the same artists too much, too).

My entire scope of favorite music is like 1964-1998, and mostly pop/soft/classic rock.

it's kind of funny....those soft rocks stations are what my mom would listen to...and I would (as a teenager)..make fun of it....but now, I find myself listening to them....how ironic, huh? ;D

;D

What did soft rock stations play in the '80s? "Yummy Yummy I've got Love In My Tummy" or other REALLY soft rock from the '60s/early '70s. :D

Well...like when I was in my teens (during the early to mid 90s)...she would play the more softer songs from the 80's...and I (trying to be a hip teenager) would want to turn the station to music that was popular at the time. :D

I remember back in 1990, I called the local FM radio station to request the song "U Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer, so I could tape it off the radio, but what I didn't know was that the station had switched formats to a classic rock station that only played hits from the 50s and 60s.  The guy on the phone was like "Sorry, we don't play that garbage" :D

You'll really think I'm a geek when I say this, but I always liked sappy soft rockish stuff. When I was about 11 I liked Michael Bolton and, say All 4 One's "I Swear". My favorite new music in the '90s was on the softer side because even though I was still a kid, I'd already gotten used to the "softer" sound since alot of '80s pop was that way.

OMG...that is so funny! ;D   Wow, that reminds me of how I would sit and listen to this local station on Friday nights (this was when I was in middle school/early high school)....and you could dedicate songs to your "crush". I would also sit there and wait for certain songs to come on so that I could record them onto a cassette tape.....those were the days!

no, I don't think you are a geek at all. It's all in what you are used to hearing. To tell you the truth...my family has always been religious and so I grew up listening to a lot of contemporary christian music (think Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, etc..). At the time I really didn't like it...but now I can listen to it and enjoy it....a lot of it has to do with the fact that certain songs remind me of different memories from my childhood.

Oh good (although I was poking light fun at myself, so I wouldn't have taken offense if you had). ;D

BTW I really liked both of them, too. I didn't even realize they were Christian and had those themes until years later. I thought it was just love songs and stuff. Musically speaking, they're kind of '80s holdover pop which I always dug.

I was never embarrased by old stuff growing up, unless it was OLD, like Sinatra or something. :D Maybe 'cause kids don't care about things like that as a 13 or 15-year old might. I basically stuck with the '80s all throughout the '90s. Although I can see how people might've been embarrased watching a music video from 10 years earlier with horrendously outdated fashion, lol.

I was a strange kid...I used to get embarrassed by my parent's music...and I remember a time where I actually refused to go into a "Goodwill" store.....can you believe that? Me...the queen of thrift stores!! It's funny how sometimes we end up being our parents as we get older. ;D

The Goodwill thing does surprise me. Was that before you knew what they were really like? 'Cause I know, before I ever went into one, I figured it was like a dumpster with a salesperson - I'm glad I proved myself wrong, though. :D

I've only gone one way pretty much: liking new things. Everything I ever liked or did in the past, I still basically do. I don't think anyone who hadn't seen me since I was 12 and suddenly met me now would ever say "Oh my God, he's no fun anymore". At least I hope not. ;D

My parents are/were both pretty cool, so I don't mind turning into them. I just don't ever want to become "one of the boring adults of the world" if you know what I mean.

I don't know why I hated it...I guess for the same reason that you stated...I just always thought that it was really dirty and I was like, "ew, I'm not wearing clothes that someone else wore"....hahahaa...my attitude has so changed since I was a youngster! ;D

yeah, my radio days are long over.  if i flip on a current station, it's the same song again and again and it is never good.
I have reached the age of sticking with what i like.

Yeah, aside from electronics/entertainment/some furniture, I've bought alot of my current clothes from there. They especially have cool Tshirts and, at times, pants. The only thing I wouldn't buy unpackaged are shoes, socks or underwear (then again, who would sell that used)? ;D ;D

yes, I've found tons of vintage stuff there that I have re-sold on Ebay. I've found a few pairs of shoes there (that were in nice condition)....they were like $100 pair of shoes....for only $4.00! :o

I should do that at some point. I've sometimes resold stuff at flea markets for more than I got 'em for.

Were they shoes still unworn/in the box? That's definitely valuable in a collectors' item sense. I found an unopened, still-boxed pair of LA Gear's from '88 a couple years ago. I still have them, I'd like to wear 'em but don't want to open the box and ruin it.

As much as I'd like a time machine, I'd also like a "duplicating device" for situations like this. ;)

no they were not unworn or still in a box...but they looked virtually brand new.....they were black Doc Marten boots...and I ended up selling them on Ebay for like almost $50.00. :o

Oh, that's still pretty cool. I guess as long as they didn't look "worn in" too much, I'd buy a pair, too. I guess the moral of the Goodwill story is, if it turns up there, all it means is one person no longer wanted it. I'm glad I now know that doesn't mean it's bad - heck, maybe they only used something once and gave it away.

Too many people (myself included before I ever went in) have a prejudice against GW as being "junk" or whatever. I've managed to convince a few people over the years, though. :)

The problem with top 40 radio is it exists merely to make hits and money. Hits that last for 3-6 months then are quickly forgotten. And all commercial radio stations exist primarily to make money, so no surprise there. It has also been proven that record companies have paid radio stations to play their music and not others.

I don't bother with commercial radio/top 40 radio of any kind anymore. Gone are the days of flicking the radio on and actually hearing something new or... "different" for once.

me too.I don't even KNOW what's in the top 40 anymore

I should add that I'm not ignorant of what's on Top 40 radio, because I do listen to my fair share of it when there's nothing I want to hear on the other stations.  That, and I like most of the artists I hear on it.  It's just that for the most part, if you want music with substance, that's not where you look.  That's not saying that classic rock doesn't have its pointless songs, but I'd rather hear Stairway to Heaven 55 times in a row than hear some lame teen-pop song the same number of times.

Has been said many times before, singles are mostly bought by kids hence the state of the charts...

I don't pay attention to the singles charts anymore, anyway.  They've been a joke for the past decade, at least...

Look at the RIAAs 100 top-selling albums of all time...

  Just a sample:

Eagles: Their Greatest Hits ~ Eagles 1971–1975
  Thriller ~  Michael Jackson
Led Zeppelin IV ~ Led Zeppelin
  The Wall ~ Pink Floyd
Greatest Hits, Volumes I & II ~ Billy Joel
  Back in Black ~ AC/DC
  The Beatles ~ The Beatles
  Rumours ~ Fleetwood Mac

  groove ;) on...

That's not the full top of the list.  Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morrisette is either 3 or 4 on the list of the biggest selling albums of all time, and that came out about 10 years ago.  Thriller is #1, and that's rather contemporary, when put up against the likes of the Eagles and Billy Joel.

Yeah, ya caught me. :P  I skipped a few out of personal bias.  All genres were not represented.  Looking over the list, though, gives you a pretty good idea...

A few more samples from the top 100:

   Double Live ~ Garth Brooks
Come On Over ~ Shania Twain
Cracked Rear View ~ Hootie & the Blowfish (another contemporary)
   Backstreet Boys ~ Backstreet Boys

   and...

Yourself or Someone Like You ~ Matchbox Twenty

Some of these suprise me... ???

   groove ;) on...
