Subject: High School Reunion!?

Written By: Davester on 08/19/06 at 3:21 am

Just learned my twenty year HSR is going to be held next year, location undetermined at this time.  $100 a pop, so it'll probably be quite the shindig...

I've also learned they're doing it differently: This reunion will cover the classes of 1986, 1987 and 1988.  Not a large school...  I'm c/o '87...

A whole year to think about it.  I already have butterflies-on-the-stomach.  I didn't attend my ten year reunion.  With my  luck, I'd run into the ex-wife...

So what do you think about these HS reunions..?  Been to yours..?

  groove ;) on...

never been to my own, but have been to every one of my wifes. the 5 & 10 year ones sucked, but the 15-20,25 were cool. i knew people and wasn't too bored. for a $100 bucks, it should be one heck of a bash. I'd be nervous too.   ;D

You attended high school in Chicago..?  Is the distance the reason you won't be attending your reunion..?

I didn't attend my ten year because, for the most part, my best friends were lower classmen - which is to say that in 11th and 12th grade I usually hung out with freshmen and sophomores.  Just seemed they were more laid back.  Always took my own classmates to be pompous prima donnas.  My best friend, who was actually in my class, has since moved to Texas and married a woman he met on-line...

This time round, with three classes represented, I may go, uh...or not... :-\\

It would be bizarre, though.  I've pondered the notion of time travel, and this may be closer to the awkward, angst ridden years of my teens than I would want to re-visit groove ;) on...

i haven't gone to mine but my older sister's 20 year was last weekend.she was in russia at the time so a friend of hers took notes for her which were emailed to me and it was some of the most hilarious reading ever..just like being there..i generally hung out with/dated older people so it's not a huge issue to get home for mine but it sure was entertaining to read about my sister's!!

I don't even know if I'll qualify to go (mine is in '08). I didn't graduate from the high school, but I went there for 2 1/4 years. I also know everyone....and don't like half of them. :P So if they send me an invite and I can afford it, I might go. If not, I'm not going to worry about it. MySpace keeps me up to date with what most of them are doing.

Good God !  :o :o :o

I moved heaven and earth to get away from school - there are very few people I would *choose* to see again from there, much less fork out money for the privelege  >:(

On the other hand, it would be interesting from a sociological standpoint - to see how many of the losers actually ended up having done time behind bars, as would have been my prediction.  Or how many managed to waste themselves/their lives.

Food for thought.  :o

Thankfully, we don't have 'em...

I wouldn't go anywhere near the bunch of miscreants that I was lumped with some quarter of a century ago!

No, I'm not going because I'm not shelling out tons of money to see those vapid bitches.  I loathed them 6 years ago, I'm going to loathe them 4 years from now, and I'll probably loathe them 20 years from now.  I had a few friends in high school I still talk to today, but I wouldn't spend one penny to sit in a cramped gymnasium and be forced to relive our winsome youth with a bunch of people I couldn't wait to get the f*ck away from in the first place.

To be honest, I'm not even sure that we have high school reunions in Canada.

If we do, I sure as hell am NOT going to mine.

my 10 year class reunion was last year...and I did NOT attend.  I really don't care about what everyone is doing...all it ends up being is one big "brag-fest"....and I have no interest in those sorts of things.

I went to 2 high schools. The first one I went to for 2 years and knew more people. The one I graduated from, I only went for 1 year and hardly knew anyone. I know the school I went to for 2 years had a reunion a few years ago (I saw the pics on Classmates). I wasn't invited to that one-but I wasn't on-line when it happened so I don't know about the next one-but I would like to go to that one.

There is talk about one for the school that I graduated from this fall. I haven't really heard any details about it yet (where and when). I did communicate with the woman who is trying to pull it together. I told her that I'm not too sure if I remember the people who will be there-nor do I imagine that they will remember me, too. She told me that it really doesn't matter about who remembers who and she is enjoying "meeting" people by trying to get this reunion going. Will I be going? I haven't decided yet. Carlos isn't one for reunions and especially if I don't really remember the people who will be there. But, I WILL NOT GO if my hubby won't.

Some cutting social commentary here -

I wouldn't need to go to a reunion to see the people I graduated with, just need to wander down to the welfare office, last time I checked half of them were there.

.. no.. I'm not kidding.

I didn't go to my tenth one two years ago (2004) and I don't plan on going to any of them. I didn't like the students and I could care less about them now. Besides, I left my home state.

Eh, I don't know, my 10th is only three years away and I recall many students in my classes being full of themselves, but at the same time there are some who have been with me since 1st grade and were always friendly with me. I'll get back to the subject later on.

$100.00?  I wouldn't go to my high school reunion if they paid me $100.00!  For me high school was just mandatory participation suburban pathology!  There's suburban pathology for folks of all ages, but the difference is, you don't have to join!  One form of suburban pathology for older folks is a twentieth HS reunion...I don't have to join and I don't intend to!
My attitude in HS was this: I'm here because the state says I have to be here until I get a piece of paper saying I don't have to be here anymore.  I didn't go to my proms, christ, I didn't even attend the graduation ceremony!  Can I get the piece of paper without going to that ceremony?
Yes.
Good.  I'll skip it!
Reunion? Meh.  Same people, just older and thicker.  They didn't like me then, they wouldn't like me now.  There are a handful of my old classmates I might like to talk to, but I could email any one of them any time.

Meh.  I went to my 10-year and it sucked.  Only thing fun about it was to see how the popular kids got fat.  :D

Most of my friends from high school didn't attend, but I saw them outside of the reunion (I wasn't living in Phoenix at the time).

I went to my ten year reunion last year. While I'll admit to not getting along with some of the members of my class while in school, that didn't hinder my enjoyment of the event one bit. I got to hang out with old friends I hadn't seen in several years. I was astounded at how many folks actually remembered me, seeing as how I wasn't the most popular kid in school. IMO, ten years of living really changed some attitudes. Eveyone was very cool to one another.

My advice? Let bygones be bygones. You'll live longer. I could choose to be bitter about ancient history, but that behavior wouldn't change what happened. Get happy!  :)

Hehe :P I'll be sure not to!

My ten year one isn't for another 5 years. I don't know whether we'll even have one to be honest - even though my form tutor vowed he would arrange it. They aren't really that big a deal in England. If there is one arranged I may go, depending on whether it is just my class or the entire year - if it's the class I doubt it beacuse there are so many people in that class that I couldn't wait to get away from! If it's the entire year, then maybe - I did have a lot of friends at school, and I guess I had a pretty good school life. We shall see if the situation arises!!

Some Yanks might not know, in British schools "form" is similar to "grade."  I think there's primary school, and then Forms I--VI, roughly equivalent to American grades 7--12.  Some American prep schools are based on the British system, so when you enter the ninth grade, they call it the "third form."

But I'd say 'form' is just a class - not the entire year. I know in the US they say 'Class of '92' or whatever - meaning the entire year - but we don't do that. Our forms/classes are around 30 pupils, and in my secondary school (age 11-16) there were 8 forms in each year. So I'm basically saying if there was an entire 'year' reunion, I'd be more inclined to go that if there was only a form reunion. Does that make sense? :)

I did not go to my 10 year reunion, which was back in 2003.  I did get to see pictures of the event from a friend though, and I couldn't believe how old some people got when they were only 27 or 28.  It made me wish I had gone since I still look good.   Some people looked the same like me, but so many of the people in the pics I saw were balding and bloated, my god they looked like they were in their 40s.  It was like geez dude, are you sure you went to the right reunion?  It's one of those funny things about life.  In 7 years, I might very well go to my 20 year.

I went to my 10 year in 1992. It was strange because most of my friends from school didn't go. But some people did come up and talk to me (some in a "hitting on" kind of way - yuck), I was surprised some of them even remembered me. But then even though phone numbers were exchanged, nothing became of that. Plus non of the things we were supposed to get that we paid for (photos, memory books, etc.) ever materialized.

The same woman classmate was responsible for the 20 year reunion and since none of my school friends had RSVPed I'd be damned if I was going to buy a plane ticket to another shoddy reunion. So I didn't go, and will probably not go to another.
