Overall, I agree with that. I think part of it is bitchy, exclusivist materialism combined with snootiness and a fake sense of counterculture. Reading a book everyday does not mean being a hipster, LOL. It's more WHAT books you're reading. Like Jonathan Safran Foer, Jonathan Lethem, Michael Chabon, anything Russian, Augusten Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Chuck Palahniuk are all "hipster" authors. I think it's more "liking to the point of obsession" those movies than having seen them. And it's more liking ultramodern/postmodern  art, like post-1980, than liking "true modern" art, made before 1980. Owning an iPod is a little too common. For the clothing, it's wearing a hoodie, shopping at Urban Outfitters, wearing a suitjacket and a t-shirt, wearing sort of "colorful, highly tailored clothing" in general, making your own clothing. Girls like to put vintage posters with stuff like Audrey Hepburn on their walls if they're hipsters. Emo hipsters like music like Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, The Postal Service, etc. The "rock hipsters" like the Strokes. This overlaps alot, BTW. '80s t-shirts and '80s styles are very common.

-Williamsburg, LES, East Village, Red Hook in NYC
-NoLibs and Fishtown in Philadelphia
-SoWeBo and Fells Point in Baltimore (not that severe, though)
-Koreatown, areas around Echo Park, Atwater Village, Park LaBrea, West Hollywood, Silver Lake (particularly the last one) in L.A.
-The Mission and Berkeley around San Francisco.
-Certain neighborhoods of Portland.
-Royal Oak and the area around Detroit.
-Allston Brighton and certain squares in Cambridge around Boston.
-Montclair in New Jersey, near Newark.
-Wicker Park/Bucktown in Chicago.
-Austin TX.

And smaller enclaves in Washington DC, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Columbus, Houston, Dallas, Austin, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, etc.

I think we're all a little hipster. I think the "Any Indie Rock" from the 1990s and 2000s, particularly the 2000s, is one of the earmarks of a true hipster. They have no discrimination in their tastes other than the level of mainstreamness of the music.

The high school hipster and the adult hipster are definitely different animals. The high school hipster born in the late '80s or early '90s, likely around 1989, probably doesn't own a vinyl record player and shops at Urban Outfitters. They're "mall hipsters." The true, Williamsburg hipster is born in the first half of the '80s or a little beforehand, has a trust fund they feed off of from their parents, and has some directionless job and aspirations of artistry that don't turn out well, and spends too much money on their clothing. Both are heavily into anything retro, particularly '80s.

I guess it's true - in some ways people from our generation who aren't conformist could tend to be viewed as 'hipsters' - but then again, are we all conforming to be hipsters? That's the question!

You could group people in any sort of way you want - I mean here in England we have what's known as the 'chavs' - they're definitly not hipsters - if my understanding of the word is correct!

As for indie music being the core of being a hipster James - I'm pressuming that you're right. But people tend to group 'indie kids' all togther I think - and I know i'm not a typical indie kid. I love indie music, but I don't really hang around with a load of people who all dress like me, who think the same as me or even like all the same music as me. Each to their own I guess...appart from the chavs - they need to sort themselves out :S

Yes, I'm not making presumptions that all people who like indie music are hipsters. Liking "indie" music is the core of it, but it's a certain elitist attitude towards it. I see people as more conforming to the hipsters than the other way around.

I'm not a hipster I was just born before 1977; therefore many of these things can be applied to me. I am pissed that the "hipster" movement have hijacked some of the phrases though. Hell, I've been saying "no worries" since I was a child b/c of a Aussie relative I would overhear saying it.

1977 isn't Gen Y. Gen Y begins in 1980 at the earliest.

It just occurred to me, being a fan of Woody Allen movies would probably be one of the major traits of hipster-ism!

I've heard ALOT of different definitions of Gen Y. There's the "old Gen Y", which is people born after 1975 (like all '90s teenagers.) A fairly commonly accepted median definition is that it's people born after 1980.

This reminded me of a poem I wrote moons ago when I was a recovering hipster.

Greasy hair

Lies

Peeling polish

Peeling paint

Green shag carpet

Wearing thin

Scratch the record

Scratch the mirror

Fake vowel sounds

And every sentence ends in a question
