Subject: Most 90s Nostalgics were born around...

Written By: Trimac20 on 07/04/06 at 3:57 am

Do you think nostalgia for the early 90s differs much from the mid or late 90s nostalgia? I get the feeling many late GenXers and early Y-ers, who were teens or in their early 20s, don't have much nostalgia for the 90s. It's more people in my age cohort - from 1985 to about 1990, who long for the days of vintage Simpsons, Nick, early 90s hip-hop.etc. So I'm guessing most 90s nostalgics would be born from about 1984-1988, or maybe those born in the early to mid-70s who were in their 20s in the 90s. I haven't had to opportunity to talk with anyone that age about this apart from people on the board, but I'll take it as a good indicator.

I would guess most "'90s nostalgics" haven't been born yet, they probably will be born about 1996-2002.

Don't you really have to have lived in the period you are nostalgic about to be a 'true' nostalgic? I thought having experienced the period would be an implicit requirement in you 'looking back' with a certain fondless. While I can say I am 'nostalgic' in a way for the 70s, having never lived in the period it's not a case of wanting to re-live my childhood like people who actually grew up in the 70s.

I would say they are born from about 1979-1988, from mid-late '90s teens through the peak '90s kids. Most people born in the early '70s are nostalgic for the '80s more so I don't know what you mean there.

Me and a lot of other people I've met who were born in 1989 and 1990 are sort of '90s nostalgists. I know I'm a die hard one.

Yeah there's a number of them around your age as well, not too many born at all born after 1990 though.

I think anyone born from 1976 to 1991 could nostalgize the '90s.

That's true, but it's possible to "nostalgic" in some ways for a paticular decade without actually having lived through it(like me despite my limited '80s experince). People born in 1996-2002 will probably be caught up in '90s nostalgia as well. In much the same way that those born 1986-1992 are for the '80s.

Exactly. I'm a die hard '90s nostalgist, but occasionaly I'll dip into the '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s. After all, It's good to be interested in the decade you were born in. Also, I'm a Beatles fan for the '60s. Yes, I do occasionally listen to '50s doo-wop. ;D

Yeah. I guess it's more appropriate to say that you have an "intrest" in the decade you were born in as opposed to "nostalgia" since that implies you can actually remember it. I cant remember a thing from the '80s but I still have an intrest in the decade(esp. the late part). Of course this would only apply for people born in the late part like me since most people born in the early part probably would remember the decade.

There's two types of nostalgia-direct nostalgia and nostalgia for what you haven't lived through. For the '90s nostalgia directly, people born from 1976-1993, probably (I'm saying this because there are alot of people on these boards born in 1982-1983 who are nostalgic for the '80s.) That's the range of people "touched by the '90s." For "nostalgia for what you haven't lived through", people born 1996-2004 will probably totally dig the '90s.

There seem to be a surprising number of 80s nostalgics who didn't actually live in the decade - especially those born about 1990 (which surprised me when I first came to the board), whereas I've heard those born in the early 80s tended to be nostalgic for the late 60s and 70s, like myself.

Yeah. There are defidently at least two nostalgia types for a decade. I'd say you have the teen of the '90s, the child of the '90s, and those for which the '90s was on the verge of there existence(anybody born after about 1995 probably wont remember the decade).
