Subject: London's Tube 'could close in hot weather'

Written By: Philip Eno on 07/03/06 at 4:19 pm

Parts of London's Tube network could be shut down on very hot days to prevent "loss of life", the mayor has warned.

As temperatures inside carriages rose to well above 30C on Monday, Ken Livingstone admitted climate change may force drastic measures in the future.

It's on days like today that I count myself extremely fortunate not to have to use it...

Not that I would in any sort of weather...I hate the Tube with a passion...

And I'm pretty certain the amount of 'hot air' spouted by Ken is affecting the climate!

When I was in London, the Tube was so badly ventilated I wanted to faint-I was there during a heat wave.

The Tube is all based on Victorian infrastructure and is not perfect for today's modern standards.

I was on the underground two years ago and it got to 32 degrees, it was unbearable, 3 people fainted on that one single journey and they had to escort a poor prgnant lady off because she became ill. It meant a 20 minute journey took about 50 mins in those conditions.

I now avoid the Tube at the best of times, sometimes it is quicker to walk.

Blimey - I remember when I lived there how everyone thought the low 30s was hot. Dont get me wrong - I am a winter girl thru and thru - but if you think 32 in a train is hot then I recommend you never visit Perth between November and April (and avoid the trains here!!) ! Cos you would soon discover 42 is worse.

Mind you - Perth is a wee bit confused this week. Its smack bang in the middle of winter and all week we have had sunny days of 22 and 23. Its freaky. When exactly can I wear my winter coats this year ?

The weather and temperature has settled down now to the usual standard British summer, rain.

Yeah Jacks, I'm in the north just now (always less warm than southern England due to North sea winds) but despite the North sea cooling breezes temps. rose to the 30's a few days ago - it's also been very humid the past few weeks, the skies are darkening and I think we'll have some thunderstorms soon. On the south coast/SE England temperatures can get even hotter  :P :P

That's the first time I've ever heard of the Tube closing down because of high temperature?? what is KL on about  ::)
I've been down there in rush hour (it's permanently rush hour!!) and packed tightly onto trains where everyone is drenched and ready to pass out..when you eventually get outside, you blow your nose and you'd think you'd been up a chimney   ;D :P ;D
About three weeks ago, several lines were having problems and had shut the doors to the stations, I cannot recall the weather that day.

Well yes - in Fremantle - not often in Perth itself. And not every day in summer. And its only for about an hour mid afternoon. Its not all its cracked up to be.

The Scottish Perth hasn't had a sunny day since 1994...!!

(Probably!)

I went to Perth (Scotland) back in 1974 and that was an overcast day.

Most places still don't have air conditioning in England and yes.. it can get humid. Not to the same extent that it can in many parts of the US though.

Hot here is usually around 90 + (I know, I find it laughable as well  ;))

Wow! It lasted 'til the second week of July? That's good for us!

I am actually saying thank god ! As long as it stays like this until I move on saturday I'll be very happy. The idea of loading and unloading a van in 32 degrees is not a happy one........

hehe

Clear as clear can be here this week - clear blue skies and rather chilly. Couple of mornings down to 1.2c and days of 13-15c. It was lovely - almost like real winter - except for the severe lack of rain. Our state will lose its entire wheat crop this year - something like $60 billion worth.

Hope it is cooling down over there now. My friend in Sweden said the UK heatwave made its way over to her area and it wasnt nice.

Just reading in todays papers http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/europe-bakes-in-heatwave/2006/07/19/1153166418078.html
that your heatwave has gone into full force again and some pretty nasty Perthlike temps are happening.

I do sympathise and hope you are all finding ways to keep nice and cool.

Even if the Tubes shutdown, it will be too hot to walk.
