Subject: Teen Cliques Up to Now
Written By: velvetoneo on 06/03/06 at 5:18 am
I was talking with Donnie the other night about how there's been a teen clique revival reminiscent of the '80s in the '00s (another examples of the oughties copying the eighties, LOL.) I think it started in the late '90s/early '00s, more or less, which seemed to be very much its own "clique period", dominated by such diverse groups as the nu metalheads, skater punks, goths, bohos, remaining grunger types, siezer-cut preppies, etc. Then, the current cliques evolved: the emos, indies/scenesters, mall hipsters, preppies, jocks, glam rap devotees (beyond just casual fans), nu metalheads, remaining punks/skaters (though they associate alot with emo.) So, do you think there has been a teen clique revival?

I think teen cliques have always been around in some form.

I think the defined-ness of teen cliques was strongest in the 80s and 90s (the 'Fast Times' to 'Clueless' era), and sort of dissolved due to the democratizing effects of the internet.etc. It's probably just my school (which was seriously 80% nerd, even the 'cool kids' were sort of nerds), but such cliques didn't seem that relevant back in school. There were just the people who had lives, and people who didn't.

There were definitely teen cliques beforehand, though. Like my mom's high school in the early '70s had the druggies, the hippies, the folkies, the metalheads, the jocks, the cheerleaders, the hipsters/bohos/whatevers, the artsy kids, the preppies, the greasers, the bad girls, etc. I think there's definitely been sort of a comeback of that preppie/not division, whereas all the cliques of the late '90s weren't as severe, though they were more numerous and distinct.

Wow... all of those groups sound really undesirable to be in, really. ;D

What about people who just don't give a rats about teen cliques?
