Is it me, or do I hear a lick of soft cell in there?

It is tainted Love in the background plus at least some of the lyrics. I keep meaning to do a full search of the lyrics to see how similar they are

That's right; it contains a sample of Softcell's "Tainted Love" all through the background.
The line from that song that Rihanna uses in "SOS" is "I toss and turn, I can't sleep at night."

isn't that plagairism?

Not exactly...she doesn't sing it exactly the same way as Softcell did. Besides, it would probably make sense for an artist to consult with the original performers before sampling. But George Harrison obviously didn't do that when he recorded "My Sweet Lord"; he got sued for "plagarizing" the Chiffons' "He's So Fine."

No they always have to get permission to do it, otherwise they get sued.

...which was what happened to George Harrison (regarding "My Sweet Lord"), as I mentioned in my above post.

Yeah I think I may have read about that or another instance, it definitely happens sometimes.

The same goes for Weird Al when he makes parodies.

It hapened with Vanilla Ice. He used the Queen/Bowie song "Under Pressure" in his hit "Ice Ice Baby" without permission

1988, had no idea she was that young
I guess teen pop stars are something of an anamoly these days. I believe Mandy Moore/Jessica Simpson were like 16 when they started out.

Jessica Simpson was 19 in 1999, I don't think she was around before that. Mandy Moore however was a mere 15 years old when she started out in 99.

Shirley Temple was only like 7 when she released her first record (I believe) ;D

That's right; I believe both of them entered the music scene in '99. For the record, Jessica Simpson is just a day older than me. :o

Yeah I have to admit, it's kinda cute. Even though I can't stand barely legal girls prancing around in practically nothing for videos...pretty much why i can't stand pop culture right now...ok back to the cheery side....i think the song is cute. :)

I'm not much for music vidieos...a lot of them seem rather corny to me. ::) I just stick with the audio.

I actually think it's a pretty forgettable song, which is a good thing. Many pop hits today are catchy as hell, which is a bad thing, cos they lodge themselves in your head and won't be evicted.

Many songs, old and new, are like that.
