Subject: Pop-punk/Emo - synonymous?
Written By: Donnie Darko on 05/30/06 at 5:34 pm
I used to think Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, etc. (Pop-punk), and Dashboard Confessional, Hawthorne Heights, etc. (Emo) were the same thing, but there's kind of a difference. They're similar in the sense that they're both whiny, and have similar fashion, but I think the pop-punk is almost as much numetal influenced as it is emo influenced. Pop-punk's been popular since the late '90s anyway (or since the early '90s, if you count Green Day and Offspring).
A real emo "boy band" would be The Click Five.

I think Simple Plan and Good Charlotte are more emo pop-punk. Blink 182 and Green Day are straight-up pop-punk without the emoness.

Wouldn't you say Click Five are the ultimate Emo boy band too? They're also '80s revivalist, because of the Thompson Twins influence.

Pop-punk was more fun and less whiny. Blink 182 and Sum 41 actually seemed happy. Also, Emo is nowhere near as awesome as mid-90's Pop-Punk bands like Green Day and The Offspring.

There is a difference between true emo like Panic at the Disco and emoish Pop Punk like Good Charlotte.

I had my suspicions, actually.
What better way to conceal your emoness? Shouting from the mountain tops about how much you detest it, of course! No one will suspect you then, correct?
WELL, THE JIG'S UP, DARKO.
THE JIG IS UP, I SAY!

Very true, the more he makes fun of emo the more I think he's emo himself. Maybe he's ashamed of it, lol. It's ok Donnie.

I'm not emo. I do have some emo tendencies, but I'm not emo. I will admit I'm kind of interested in it though.

I still don't get the whole emo culture thing and to me anyway it doesn't even seem like the emo music has anything to do with the emo culture.

Professor James sits down and explains...
We ALL have some emo tendencies, children. So let's sit down and have a group therapy session. I admit I do have some emo tendencies, albeit without the music. I mean, when I'm in a bad mood, I sit in my room listening to Tori Amos and writing poetry. It's called BEING A TEENAGER. And Beth, at least you admit it...

I used to prefer listening to Blink 182 on the radio and wallowing in my self-pity, lol

They're two links in one chain mail that is "Music". They overlap in places, have some similarities, but they're two independent genres. These two links just overlap a lot more then others.
