Subject: If time travellers from past years came to 2006...
Written By: Marty McFly on 05/25/06 at 11:12 pm
What year might they think this really was, if they explored for a couple days and interacted with people, only without seeing any "time related" things such as newspapers or TV shows mentioning people or events?
My guess:
Before 1900: probably the 30th century ;D
1950: 1975
1980: 1993
1985: 1996
1990: 1999
1995: 2002

I'd say:
1800: 4000? ;D
1850: 2100
1900: 1970
1910: 1970
1930: 1980
1940: 1985
1950: 1990
1960: 1990
1970: 1995
1980: 1995
1985: 1997
1990: 1998
1995: 2001
2000: 2003

I dunno, but sometimes I feel like a Marty McFly who just drove an atomic Delorean into his own dystopian future!

Yeah, assuming there were no calendars, no clocks.etc anywhere :D, I think most would be able to pretty accurately gage what time period it was in. However, it must be said that in the 1950s people though we'd be all piloting flying cars in cities on the moon (seriously), so they'd like underestimate how far into the future they'd gone.

People in the 1960s thought we'd be driving golf carts on the moon by the time the kids of then had children...I've asked people alive then and they begrudgingly admitted they're disappointed with the future and wished it was more like The Jetsons.

I saw a cartoon from the 50s or 60s that had someone go to 1990. It was like the Dystopia you read about in some books... we're still about 300 years away from it. ;D

I honestly don't think any of us will live to see a Jetsons-type future (not that it'll never exist, but we're talking, probably the year 3000 or something ;) ). I can see people in the '40s, 50s or even as late as the '60s thinking we'd be like that by now (I do have this book about the Millenium that lists past predictions about 2000 -- i.e. people thinking we'd have waterproof homes, and food pills, etc).
What's the latest does anyone think, people would've still thought our present would be sci fi (like the Jetsons or BTTF II)? 1985 maybe?

Old post, but...
I pretty much agree. The only thing I might change is, I'd guess anyone before WWI or so, could still overestimate when this was (just because some 19th Century lifestyle was hanging around, and the 20th hadn't totally become widespread yet). A 1900 person would probably think this was 2050, and maybe a 1950 person would think it was 1980.
I also agree even back in 2000, since tech and everything was still moving pretty fast, I bet I'd think this was only 2003 or '04.

I'd go back a bit further. I'd say about 1980 or so. Despite movies like Back To the Future, etc. I don't think there's anyway that people in the '80s could have thought things would advance that much in just 20 years. Like now I know the 2020's will be alot different from the '00s but I dont think they'll be that different. I think that 1975 is the last year that people really believed things would be like the Jetson's or something.

True, it was probably more wishful thinking (i.e. little kids in the '80s for instance).
The '70s is also the first "modern" decade I think, so even by then, people probably started realizing we probably wouldn't have flying spaceships like people back around 1940 may have figured, lol.

I agree. I could see how kids in the '80s may have thought about it since 20 years would've seemed like a long time to them. I think the '70s was the first decade that people relized that the new millenium wouldn't be as futuristic as people thought even 10 or so years ago. In the '40s people defidently thought that the 2000's would be futuristic. 60 years is a long time. Can you imagine what things will be like in 2066? :o

As a child in the 80s, I didn't think there would be practical flying cars in 2006, but I did think big companies might use a Model T version of a flying car that used mini helicophter rotor blades or something. But I wasn't dumb enough to think we would have Back to the Future "hover technology". Yet I still did think there would be much more technical advancments then what is around us.
It's been dissapointing. The cities, skyscrapers and freeways still look about the same. The cars look different and digital technology has vastly improved, but it's still a let down. As a 9 or 10 year old in 1985, I probably would have thought 2006 was the late 1990s. Like 1997 or something. I'm sure I would have been surprised that it's actually 21 years into the future, not 12 or 13.

I think the idea that Arnold Schwarzenegger would become the Republican Governor of California would be either somewhat disturbing or laugh-out-loud funny to a lot people in the '80s and early '90s. ;D
