Subject: Is gore out of style?

In the '90s, flying organs and boogers were all the rage. In the '00s, they're still around, but you have to look harder. '00s TV probably has more violence than '90s TV overall, but it's more "glam" violence like shootings, ala CSI than gritty, gory '90s violence.

I think it is...9/11 did the trick.

I think films like "Saw" and "Hostel" show us that gore is still fairly prominent, but in the past 1-2 years, the hardcore gore of "slasher" films has been replaced with a more harrowing gore.. there's less, but it's a lot more intense. 90s and early 00s gore was a bloody stabbing, now it's graphic torture or self-inflicted pain, etc.

I think Columbine really started the anti-gore reaction, 9/11 sent it into full swing, and the increased censorship after Janet Jackson's Super Bowl incident sealed the deal. The 00's are a very bloodless decade compared to the 90's, 80's, and even the 70's to some extent. Some of those 70's horror movies are far bloodier than any horror movie that's come out recently.

Yeah, the T.C.M. is quite horrifically violent in parts. Even campy movies like 'Death Race 2000' have a slight uncomfortable fixation with very sadistic violence (peoples heads being crushed by wheels, resulting in spurts of red, that sort of thing). 90s video games in particularly were obsessed with gore to an almost unhealthy degree (even if they are only games). I think it's decline was in part tied to the decline of traditional FPS's like Doom and Quake.

Yeah, bloody and messy violence was more "cool" in the '90s (just ask Beavis and Butthead! ;D Their reactions actually weren't that far from how typical guys their age and of that mindset in the 1991-97ish era viewed that sort of thing).
Perhaps it was the last wave of "shock value" things? That really has appeared to have died out or been reduced in the last few years. I mean being shocking just for the sake of shocking, or of p*ssing off your parents, etc.

i'm not sure how much 9/11 had to do with it. all the gore of the 60s and 70s coincided with very bloody news reports coming out of vietnam, what showed american soldiers with horrible wounds, missing limbs, stuff like that, right on the evening news. whereas with columbine and 9/11 footage of the bloody aspects of that violence presumably exists -- i know there's security footage of columbine that's presumably quite bloody, for isntance, but it's being hidden from us.
so whatever trend there is going on away from the frank portrayal of violence, i think it predates 9/11 and columbine. the way they were covered is more symptom than cause.

having mulled it over, i think it mighta kicked off with the first gulf war. that was all about erasing violence, covering the action from the air using those little bombcams (you remember? the target sights?) and pretending the bombs getting dropped weren't blowing people's arms and legs off.

I have evil fantasies about doing a "Saw" number on certain people who really have it coming!

Yeah, violence is an integral part of human nature. I've seen alot of the Vietnam footage, and it is quick shocking in parts. Not only the actual gore, but the brutality and sheer - well evilness of some people. I don't think we should shy away from showing what's really happening altogether, but the media shouldn't go overboard for ratings.
