The first Gen Y things:
The Bart Simpson Craze c. 1991, Home Alone (these are sort of XYish things)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Nickelodeon
The Little Mermaid
In terms of music, I think the Macarena and the Spice Girls were the first Gen Y things.

The Macarena is very Y.
First there was that mid-1996 to early 1998 period that was partially Y and partially X, and then there was the "Y explosion" that happened over the summer of 1998. Though, as you've said before, we related to later Gen X things like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air very well in the earlier '90s.

I'd include late '80s/early '90s Disney toons like Ducktales and Darkwing Duck in there as well and I would agree that "old school" Nickelodeon is very Y.
