Subject: Turning year of the '00s?
Written By: Donnie Darko on 05/16/06 at 12:09 pm
What year does the "early '00s" turn into "late '00s"? I'd say 2006.

I'm going to be different and say 2007.

But 2007 is still hypothetical ... actually I'm of the belief that all times actually exist simultaneously, and that 2006 is merely a location.

Hencewise with your hypothetical presumption 2006 is the year...for 2006 is not even 1/2way thru yet. Unless we build a time-machine, so we can go into the future and answer this deeply profound question. How do you propose to do that, oh Wise one that knoweth all?

Right now 2006 is the same as late 2005 ... because of the school-year theory ...

Well, our school year ends at the end of the year, so it doesn't really apply to us.

Not if China, North Korea and Iran have their way, it won't. ;)

The big turning year may be 2007.

Maybe ... I think 2007-2009 will be very definitive ... that might be the real '00s ...

The real '00s at the end of the decade, that's not really that normal, though it did happen with the '70s so it's possible.

Well yeah the reason I said that is because this decade mirrors the '70s, in that it is always '90s-like but was different from the '90s early on in a not-so-obvious way.

I think it's a misperception that the real '70s began in the late '70s, they were just the more maligned/infamous part. The same with the late '90s. Both the early-mid '90s and the early-mid '70s were their own decades with distinctive music.
I think this'll follow the '80s, like this decade has been, and the late '00s, like 2007-2009, will be pretty much a presage to the 2010s in the underground. I think the reason that, IMO, the '80s didn't fully begin in the US until early 1983 was all the stuff at the end of the '70s, the same reason for the '00s not fully gelling until spring 2003, because of the distinctive Y2K era.
I think it'll be 2007-2008.

The '90s mirrored the '70s, the '00s sort of seem to be mirroring the '80s, in organization of things.

I say 2008. New president, new attitude.

I would say 2005. In music, it was more alternative and electronica, as well as the rise of emo and indie artists. Also, a lot new sitcoms and drama shows premiered, and less reality shows.

I think about 2003 was the turning point into the mid-'00s, with the rapid growth of "emo"/indie and the associated subculture, the iPod, glam rap growing rapidly, the preppie subculture growing rapidly, people forgetting about the war and the economy and becoming politically apathetic again, the sudden market saturation of digital cable and broadband access, etc. It started happening around March or so with 50 Cent's "In Da Club" and I think the transition was complete by the time The O.C. premiered in September. I'm guessing 2007-2008 will be the next real transition.

Yeah 2003 was definitely the turning point into the mid 2000s.

I'd say Late 2008-Early 2009.

There were 'two' 70s: the early 70s of bell-bottoms/flares, retro architecture, bubblegum pop, family TV sitcoms, and the late 70s of punk, disco.etc. The 70s has been so symbolised by Disco people seem to forget it was only really big in the last 2-3 years of the decade (even in '76 it was a bit of a novelty).
