I think the female pop stars can be divided into more pop/r'n'b like Madonna or Beyonce, and the more 'soul'/real vocalists like Diana Ross, Barbara Streisand, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera.

Yeah, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey are sort of in their own category, descended from Aretha Franklin, Peggy Lee, etc. Diana Ross falls into both.
