Subject: '90s Show or '00s Show?
Written By: velvetoneo on 05/03/06 at 4:24 pm
This covers shows premiering 1997-2000...state your commentary on this/own version of this list.
1997:
Just Shoot Me-'90s...a "workplace" sitcom.
Daria-Very late '90s and slackerish.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer-Another very late '90s show. Part of the "supernatural teen" trend.
South Park-Hmm, both. It's really 1999ish, like '90s on the verge of starting to go '00s, but the humor is late '90s.
Ally McBeal-Sort of early '00s.
King of the Hill-Hmm...it's more of a '90s thing, I think, with '00s appeal.
1998:
Dawson's Creek-It's a late '90s/early '00s sort of thing, the styles of the show are more '90s, but it's a big influence on '00s TV.
Sex and the City-I think of it, styles and all, as more of an '00s show.
That '70s Show-Despite its going into the mid-'00s with lower popularity...it's more of a late '90s, early '00s thing and a showcase of '90s '70s nostalgia.
Will & Grace-It was most popular in the late '90s, but its sort of a presage to the '00s and all the stereotypically gay-themed shows. Though the actual writing and plots are very silly and late '90s.
Charmed-It's a '90s, supernatural teen sort of thing.
1999:
Family Guy-Very early '00s.
The Sopranos-Another sort of more "'00s" show.
The West Wing-'00s, an hour-long theme TV drama.
Angel-It's more late '90s, though most of its run was the '00s.
Judging Amy-'00s.
Who Wants to be a Millionaire?-A bit too silly for the '00s, but not terribly '90s either.
2000:
Malcolm in the Middle-Late '90s or early '00s.
Gilmore Girls-Pretty '00s feeling.
The District-'00s feeling.
Boston Public-Silly, early '00s feeling to it.

What about 'Everybody Loves Raymond?' I think that's actually quite 90ish in content, even though it had slightly more airtime in the 00s (think it aired from 1996 to 2004).

Yeah, I think of it as a very '90s, dysfunctional family-but-not-so-over-the-top sort of thing with more focus on the adults than the kids.

Yeah I think Everybody Loves Raymond is more of a '90s-ish show as well.

I think of the first '00sish shows as premiering in 1999 in number. Sex and the City began as a late '90s sort of show and ended up pretty '00s, being all concerned with the status and fashion and the cheesy melodrama outweighing the comedy. It reached its peak of popularity as an '00s show, definitely.

Never liked Sex in the City, mainly because of Sarah Jessica Parker :D

I liked her in the first two seasons of SC and her pre-SC career, when she was sort of quirky and fun.

I guess the reason I didn't really like it that much was because I couldn't really relate it to my life. A bunch of 30-somethings looking for Mr. Right...seemed all the show was was them chatting and sipping champagne. Definitely more of a chicks show ;).
