Subject: Sources of Current Musical Trends...

IMO...

Emo (Commercial/Punk Emo): Combination of '90s pop-rock such as Green Day, Blink 182, goth music (particularly The Cure), and '80s post-punk (Television, The Smiths, etc.)
Glam Rap: It's southern crunk rap, combined with '90s R&B pop and some influence of '80s new wave, hair metal, and synthpop sheening it over.
Indie Rock: Revival and blatant imitation of new wave, post-punk, etc. Also some experimental music.
Emo (Indiemo): Everything as prior...except with considerably less obvious pop-punk influence and the heavier influence of twee pop, late '70s-'80s post-punk and new wave, The Smiths and the rest of the British underground scene, and assorted male singer-songwriters. Also, Rufus Wainwright and Elliott Smith.
A/C Rock of the '00s: It's sort of, hmmm...bland? But it has its roots in a combination of '80s soft rock, post-grunge, teen pop, and '90s pop-rock.
Post-Grunge: Watered down grunge with typical pop-radio hooks.
'00s R&B: A combination of crunk rap/glam rap and the soft urban contemporary, including new jack swing and quiet storm, of the '90s.

Looking over that list I'm surprised by how different the American and Australian music scenes are atm. Of course Top 40 is sort of similar, but we also have some trends which you don't.

Like Experimental hip-hop with influences from reggae, rock-steady.etc
Gyroscope-esque minimalist rock (a bit like the Vines), a bit like so called 'Indie' rock
And a sort of brief metal revival

Really, the metal/hard rock revival like the Darkness is big there....? I think that's probably one of the next trends to reach our shores, but emo and the post-punk revival make it hard here.

It is just sort of beginning (though it's been festering for the last few years), but it has really been driven by local bands, with a strong sense of local identity.

Emo: An odd combination of boy bands, '90s pop punk, new wave, metal, nu metal, and goth
Glam Rap: Crunk, R&B/pop, synth pop, gangsta rap
Indie Rock: Revivals of periods from the '50s to the '80s, experimental music, nerd rock
Adult Contemp: Basically, a backlash against teen pop. Influenced largely by grunge-pop of the '90s and artists like Rod Stewart
Post-Grunge: This is what happens when rock and roll is surpassed by hip hop.
'00s R&B: The same as '90s R&B, except more hip hop ish

Current music here:

Emo is based around the pop-punk, post-punk genres of the last 20 or so years.
Indie rock: This term is more broad a term than people think. Most indie rock I hear consists of influences such as experimental, electronica, post-rock, reggae (a little) and revival of older 70s and early 80s rock and punk sounds.
Post-Grunge: A generic term for the crap music you hear on top 40 or mainstream rock radio.

I don't bother to look into rap, dance, pop etc as I have no interest.

Emo is basically late 1990s post grunge combined with some hair band music and new wave
Crunk is basically a more aggressive, slower form of party rap... don't know where that come from
Teen pop rock (Hilary Duff, etc.) is late 1990s pop-rock with some 1980s and 1970s flare to it.
Electroemo is basically 2000s trance combined with emo and 1980s new wave, along with 1970s disco.
Club Rock is like just basically combining this 2000 pop sh** with rock.

late 90'-00's teen-pop: dervied from late 80's teen pop-trend of Tiffany, New Kids on The Block, and Debbie Gibson. Britney;s popularity could
traced back as well to R&B singers like Monica, Brandy, and Aaliyah who debut on the music scene 1994/1995. The Backstreet Boys popularity could be traced back to Boyz II Men no doubt.

late 90's/early 00's R&B influended Hip-Hop: was derived from Mary J. Blige and (2 Pac's slowever songs) probably being popular in the 90's. For
example a rapper Ja Rule was influenced by 2Pac no doubt. Mary J. Blige was one of the first to combine R&B with elements of Hip-Hop.

00's Glam Rap like 50 Cent was infuenced by 80's Pop/R&B/Freestyle, 1997-2002 R&B infuenced Hip-Hop, early to mid 90's Gagsta Rap and is 80's Hair Metal in its attitude..

Stuff like Kelly Clarkson, and Avril Lavigne can be traced back to Britney. I think Avril Lavignes music can be traced pack to a band like Green Day because Avril does have pop-punk elements in her music as well as influences from Britney maybe even Alanis Morrisette. Kelly Clarkson;s music was derived from Taylor Dayne(Kelly's rock element anyway) and Celine Dion.

EMO was influenced by 80's New Wave, 90's pop-punk, and late 90's/early 00's teen-pop.

Stuff like Ashanti, Beyonce, and Rihanna(especially her) can be traced back to late R&B singer Aaliyah.

Stuff like Timbalands music can be traced back to 80's pop/R&B like "Hall and Oates" , early to mid 90's Dance/Club Play Music and maybe 1996-1998 Electronica like "The Chemical Brothers" or "Prodigy".

A singer like Chris Brown was influenced by Michael Jackson. Justin Timberlake was infuenced by both Prince and Michael Jackson. Ne-Yo was influenced by R&B singer Usher.

A Rapper Kanye West was influenced by Puff Daddy(1997-mid 1998) and Prince.

And Ne-Yo is also influenced by Micheal Jackson, 98 Degrees, Boyz II Men, and maybe some Dru Hill.
