Subject: '00s Period Timeline

2000 up to September or so: Still very, very late '90s.
Late 2000-Mid 2001: Still the late '90s in terms of cool factor and the like, getting weaker towards 2001 in terms of late '90s vibe, but with some sort of embryonic early '00s cultural elements like Eminem and reality TV, and Bush, the worse economy, etc.
Late 2001-Early or Mid 2003: The "early '00s." Alot of things then seemed to be updated mid-late '90s things for the '00s, like 1981-1983 still had alot of "hidden" '70s-style stuff nobody would admit was sort of '70s. Alot of 2002 stuff like Pink, Avril Lavigne, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, Good Charlotte is just updated, more "'00s" versions of the teen pop and A/C radio rock of the late '90s, and hip-hop was still a bit more real then, it was pre iPod, and though digital cable and DSL/cable internet access were making wide advances, they weren't huge yet, and neither was blogging, really. Also, nu metal was still pretty cool, some more subtle '90s things were still cool, and it was before emo and the "indie"/hipster thing really took off in late 2003 in suburban high schools...it was more of an urban white hipster thing. Vulgar dressing was definitely bigger then, and the whole patriotism thing and actual fear of US terrorism made it bigger. Reality TV peaked then.
Mid or Late 2003-Mid 2006 (probably): The "golden '00s" of crunk rap, emo/indie/hipsterist rock, iPods and almost free internet downloading, widespread "On Demand" and deluxe TV and internet access, political apathy, excessive materialism, extreme '80s nostalgia, Paris Hilton, upper middle-class prosperity, blogging and MySpace, sudoku, knitting, teen dramas like the O.C., etc. Less of a peak of reality TV and the big blockbuster-type movies.
Late 2006-Mid 2009: The late '00s period. Probably a worse economy and a decline in pop culture and the "smart Y" thing, and a move towards more late '80s inspired and darker fashion. Though probably fashion will be very '80s in design, from the look of the runway.

That looks pretty accurate to me.  Here's mine:

Very late '90s like - Jan-March 2000
The "pre-'00s" - April 2000-9/11
The early "Linkin Park" '00s 9/11-mid 2003
The mid "Emo" '00s late 2003-mid 2006
The late "Waning" '00s - late 2006-2009

Extended late '90s: early 2000-mid 2000
Very early '00s: still very late '90s like but '00s things really start appearing. late 2000-mid 2001
Early '00s: nu metal, earlier emo, reality tv, ashanti, nelly, ja rule, pink, softer more pop-ish hip-hop is popular.  late 2001-early 2003
Mid '00s-: Really began with the rise of 50 cent, Beyonce goes solo, crunk, emo makes big gains in 2005, maroon 5, reality tv beings decline in 2005 or so. early/mid 2003-mid 2006???

What about April makes it start to be the pre-'00s? One thing I've always noticed is that the early part of a decade always has alot of things that claim to be different, but are really just slightly altered derivations of the previous decade. Like the early '90s had Guns N'Roses and the early '80s disco that claimed to be synthpop and just ended up sounding bad cheesy.

That's when the dot-com bubble burst.  Also, there were some pre-'00s things, like Papa Roach that surfaced in the summer of 2000. But still overall I think before 9/11 is basically still the late '90s.

However, I do agree that there was a notable change around September of 2000.  That was around when the PS2 came out, and also when Reality TV blew up and a month later you had the Bush/Gore thing, which was a very proto-'00s sort of thing.

I remember it being very weird and incongruously dark, along with alot of things that year that are more '00s, and people really not knowing how to respond. September '00-August '01, while still basically the late '90s, definitely had some proto-'00s elements to it.

Definitely.  If you look at the music of that time, it was very much a mix of 1999-ish and 2002-ish sort of stuff.  Numetal illustrates this trend, as it's really somewhere between angry grunge and whiny emo, with some hip hop thrown in.

Yeah, Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, Pink, and Jessica Simpson were just updated versions of late '90s teen pop and A/C radio rock.

i feel like the golden years of the 90's ended in early mid 1997 and the rest of the decade felt like the early 00's i think the mid 00's (2004-2006) feel like a diffrent decade they kinda remind me of the early 90's
