Subject: What CD's have you bought so far in 2006?
Written By: whistledog on 04/07/06 at 2:23 am
Apart from a few old CD's I got from thrift shops, the only new CD I have bought so far this year is "Taller in More Ways" by Sugababes. It hasn't been officially been released in North America yet, but I was lucky enough to have found an import copy of it on the racks at Future Shop 8)

It IS a lot nicer to have the case, album art, liner notes and whatnot... but I just don't have the money for all that. I get about 20 dollars every 3 weeks, and that has to cover food and fun... I don't have much money for music. But when I can, I buy CDs.

I agree that having the packaging is nice. But the trade off is that you get to choose only the songs you want. In the ancient days I had to purchase an entire CD for one rare song or two, not really caring for their other songs.

I like New York Tendaberry, but I like Eli and the Thirteenth Confession a little bit better.
For me personally, Tendaberry is more powerful and moving -- the ending of "You Don't Love Me When I Cry" alone is one of the most heartbreaking vocal performances I think I've ever heard, and with that gently-played piano slowly fading out afterward... God, I just find it incredibly evocative. Also, I absolutely love the little orchestral flourishes throughout the album -- they give it a magical "something" that is difficult for me to describe, but which, incidentally, reminds me of some of Tori's music. I'm a total sucker for stripped-down, piano-based music by thoughtful and melancholy female songwriters like this. ;)
Not that I'm slagging Eli by comparison, as I think it is also a great album and a very impressive amalgam of musical styles. Eli and Tendaberry are close enough in quality that I can easily understand someone liking either one over the other; from what I've read, they're both generally considered among her best work.
Anyway, I won't hijack this thread any further.

I count Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Aimee Mann, Suzanne Vega, Carole King, and Tori Amos among my other favorites of this genre. I actually bought The Sensual World, not The Dreaming. I'm looking for The Dreaming along with Never for Ever.

My first Kate Bush was The Whole Story, so I've heard some of the stuff of it, and I've downloaded a few of the songs in passing to test them. The Dreaming isn't available so widely and I've only heard "Sat In Your Lap."

Well, The Dreaming f*cking rocks. I hope you like it; it's my personal favourite Kate album and certainly her zaniest.
I often listen to "Sat in Your Lap" to relieve myself of university-related stress; it helps me not to take myself too seriously.

Patience is an awesome album. The North American version does not include "Shoot the Dog". I was lucky enough to find a UK import copy at my local HMV in '03
I just had to have "Shoot the Dog". That song is fab 8)

I also bought Tubular Bells earlier this year. Quite a treat for the years...I also bought Kraftwerk's 'Autobahn' perhaps inferior to Tubular Bells, but a revolutionary album.

Yesterday I bought my first CD's for 2006....
"How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb"-U2
and a CD that came out in the 90's...Green Day's "Dookie" which I already have on cassette.
I plan to buy in the coming months:
"Evil Empire", "The Battle of Los Angeles" and "Renegades" by Rage Against the Machine
"Oral Fixation Volume 2" by Shakira
"Testify" by P.O.D.
I just bought "Testify" this afternoon, along with Rage Against the Machine's self titled debut CD and "Evil Empire" both which I used to have on cassette, but my now-defunct Walkman ate both tapes. Yes, I took good care of the tape player, but it just seemed to want to be naughty that day.
Sorry if I said something silly there.

So far I've bought two soundtracks,
"Hustle and Flow"
and
"Brokeback Mountain"
two very different music formats, but what can I say, I'm diverse in my musical tastes.

I had to pick up a copy of Crackle by Bauhaus since they're going on tour with NIN!!!
"Bela Lugosi is Dead"...and OK Computer-Radiohead, simply since its a classic.
A cool new band everyone should check out is Jared Leto's 30 Seconds to Mars. I just got their cd, A Beautiful Lie. Very enjoyable listening. Can't wait for the Tool c.d. on May 2nd.

I see you're catching up on your Classic Rock education as well. I was (still am) into the whole Classic Rock phase for the past two years...I've bought and borrowed (more of the latter) hundreds of albums from the 60s, 70s.etc. Two really stand-out ones I obtained this year include 'Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul', 'What's Going On' by Marvin Gaye, 'Tubular Bells' - Mike Oldfield, 'Forever Changes' by Love, and a few others.

It's one of the few instrumentals I bothered listening to the whole way through...sure, today, someone on a home computer could come up with something like it (A bit like Kraftwerk's Autobahn, and various Tangerine Dream albums I also have), but this was the 70s, man!

I may add Kelly Clarkson's CD to my collection. I thought I could hold out, but she keeps churning out some decent tunes off that record, so it may be worth the purchase.
