Subject: Are you looking forward to the late 00s?

Written By: deadrockstar on 03/16/06 at 10:44 pm

I think I am.  The Mid 00s are nearly over now,  hard to believe.  Next year will be 2007, the first tear of the late 00s.

I'd say:

2000, 2001, and 2002 are the early 2000s
2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 are the mid 2000s
and 2007, 2008, and 2009 the late 2000s

I think certain things have been happening lately, and 2005/2006 is a time when certain things have been/are changing that will make the late 2000s seem less like a continuation of the 90s.  VHS is supposed to come to an end in the next year I believe, as is analog Television.  That 70s Show and King Of The Hill, two of the major holdovers left from the 90s are coming to an end during this spring.  Pop stars from the late 90s like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake seem pretty much past their prime now.  Also I've got the feeling Eminem is also behind his "super big" period.  He'll still be aroud, but he won't be megahuge.

Anyone else know of any more ways things are becoming less like the late 90s now?

And are you also looking forward to the late 00s?

For me I went through a lot of personal issues in the early to mid 00s that are now finally being sewn up.  So I'm kinda looking to it as a fresh start.

Yes I am, can't wait actually. It's going to be the late 2000s soon, can't believe it. This decade has really evolved in the last few years, it is far from the so called new '90s some people were saying early in the decade. The mid '00s are the heart of the decade, 2003-2006 is the core 2000s. The late '90s pop scene was pretty much over by late 2001. Eminem is still pretty popular, but you're right that he's probably at the end or near the end of his major popularity. I think they may have recently extended analog broadcasts until 2009, but I'll have to check. I'm looking forward to see what happens in pop culture and how this decade ends up ending.

I definitely am.  2006, man we're getting into the future fast.

Although I'm really going to be crushed when 1980 becomes 30 years ago in 2010, the new decade will definitely make up for it.

Do you think anyone will care that it's a new decade?  I think the tens also might be the last "real" decade, since nobody cares about the 1900s and 1910s pop culturally.

Of course i'm looking foward to the late 00's. And there's alot to look foward to(like Spiderman 3 coming out in 2007 ;)). I think '07 will be a pretty good bit like 2006 but starting to see current trends popularities dying down a little. 2008 will be a pretty changeful year I think with the election that year. And in 2009 some new type of music will start to gain popularity I think also they'll be a new President and people will start to look foward to the 2010's.

I'm looking forward to it, because I'll be older and I'll be doing more interesting things than school and exams.

Also because all these "musicians" and celebrities like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan will be forgotten, probably because they'll be in rehab. And all these older rock bands are now making comebacks, so who knows...maybe it will be like the early 90's again.

I'm most looking forward to about the year 2050 (though I'll be at the ripe old age of 64)...I think that's when we'll enter a truly new age.

Not especially, no. However, I think we'll see a more interesting underground scene that will lead to the '10s and the death and beginning of dislike of alot of truly annoying aspects of '00s culture (reality TV, glam rap, emo, Paris Hilton.)

I look forward to some more great movies but resent the countless horror remakes hollywood will continue making.

I look forward to more boosts in technology making things easier.

I don't look forward to being way past the age I miss the most.

I don't look forward to teenagers idolizing more sheeshty people who should not be famous to begin with.

I look forward to gambling plus being able to drink.

Other than technology, there hasn't been any big pop culture breakthrough. There's been some mild changes, but nothing huge, since 1998/1999. I'm hoping the late 2000s will have some pop culture breakthrough.

I contend we are now entering the "Blade Runner" era.  We won't have the android replicants and the space colonies, but the rest of it will be with us in twelve years.

It's a tired, tired decade. Sorry to be complaining about the '00s, but it's true. Not that there weren't things wrong as hell with other decades. Like, the '80s had Reagan, deindustrialization, conspicuous consumption, and Warren Cuccarullo.

I really don't think it's that bad. Yea Bush and the war sucks, but there are a lot of good things (tv shows, movies, even music). The '00s are not just about reality tv and rap. This decade will be pretty memorable in 10 years, for good and bad, like every other decade. I do think they will be more memorable than the '90s, not necessarily better though.

Late '00s begin in 2007.

It depends on how you look at it. On one hand 2006 is the first year after the half-way point of the 00's(2005) but I'd say that 2006 is still mid-00's.

The halfway point is actually January 1, 2005. So technically that day and on is in the second half of the decade. So really 2005 is actually also late '00s by that definition. I personally divide it in 3 parts, early 00-02; mid 03-06; late 07-09.

I think there are a few reasons I hate this decade: Bush, the stupid Christian conservatism, the loss of millions of manufacturing jobs due to free trade, lots of the independent "spirit" of the '90s and even the '80s finally becoming lost to corporatism, the progress of the media over free will, the progress of corporations into making us all one tool, etc. The pop culture is merely a dislike, overall...not that America's Next Top Model and Six Feet Under and some of the movies aren't great IMO, but it doesn't compare to the '90s, overall. Also, I hate the really snotty, pretentious, "money"/"hip" attitude of this decade.

It's more distinctive than the '90s, but I think the '90s were inarguably a better decade in alot of ways, in some ways better than the '80s, actually.

Very true, I agree even though i've always wondered what to do with the 3rd year of a decade. It seems like it should still be be included in the early part but could also be in the middle part.

I can't stand Bush either or the Christian Conservatism, but generally I don't mind the decade that much. I'm not saying it's so great because it ain't, but it's not so bad. The '90s generally were better my reasons for liking the '90s generally aren't so much because of pop culture, but instead because of politics and the economy.

Yea I don't like some of those attitudes either, but I try to enjoy the '00s without the typical hipster attitude. Most of my favorite music will be from the '00s, it's just what I've grown to like what can I say. I have a lot of TV shows I like too (especially now in the mid '00s), and there's been some great movies (even though I don't watch too many movies).

The '00s is a very "guilty pleasure" decade like the '80s. The '80s was hellishly fun, but a good deal of it promoted these horrible Reaganite values underneath...a "Hip to be Square" attitude. Part of the reason I dislike the '00s is the attitude that goes with it and that I think all the music sounds alike. Also, I never got to be part of a single HS crowd, I hang out with a more diverse selection of people.

Yeah I like 00's music alot and probably will favor it in the end over other decades(even though I like 60's-00's rock though). TV is hit or miss and there aren't a whole lot of good shows but there are a few that I like. And movies have been pretty decent.

Actually, King of the Hill is actually an underrated show, but I think it really should end now.  Even in 2004ish, I thought it should be done.

King of the Hill is a VERY underrated show.  Alot of people just look at it on the surface and think "oh they're just dumb rednecks its not funny".  But trust me, it's a really good parody of life here in Texas and many things in it if you are from here really make you laugh.

Is KOTH still on the air?  :o I think the last I saw of that show was in 2003

The late 00s will be much different for me than both the early to mid 00s. In a good way I hope!  :)
By 2007 I would have finished my studies
By 2008 I should have a full-time job, my own place (well, not my own, but renting or flatting) and more money/independence
By 2009, who knows?

Yeah, I'll be looking forward to the late 00's, as long as it's better than 2006. 2008 is a year I'm really looking forward to, since I have a feeling it's going to be a great year. As long as I can remember, the years that have the summer olympics have always been good years for me (2004, 2000, 1996, etc...) I think they are also leap years. Anyhow, I think 2008 will have a lot of good music which will be a continuing progression starting in late 2007 (after the regression finally turns around). I also think that in '08, Hollywood will finally come up with some new ideas and the box office will have more original movies and less remakes, and Batman Begins 2 is also supposed be released. Furthermore, 2008 will be the last year for Bush and I think that a Democrat will be elected for our next president.
