Subject: Which technological invention are you most looking forward to?
Written By: Trimac20 on 03/03/06 at 2:25 am
Which future technological 'invention' or 'advancement' are you most excited about, or do you think will improve your life the most?
Mine will be the automation of the home...automated vacuum cleaner robots (that are actually affordable), self automated kitchens...I know, I know, there are many potential (and disastrious) things that could go wrong. I'm also really excited about new transport technologies. Like the Segway (a sort of two-wheeled pogo stick thing which is controlled by leaning backwards.etc) those personal transport units (small helicopters that can land anywhere) and personal hovercrafts. I personally think those mini-helicopters will become widespread enough by the 2040s or even late 2030s, so much so they will have to enact traffic laws to control the new skyways.

I don't think self-automated vacuum cleaners will become a reality until I'm too old to care...maybe remote control, but what if it slams into furniture and breaks a vase? I'm looking forward to ethanol. It'll revive the Midwestern economy, make cars cheaper and revive the U.S. auto industry, etc.

Today's vacuum robots are actually surprisingly advanced. Though I haven't been lucky enough to see them in action. Anyway, I for one can't wait to see how technology will 'enhance' (or even detract) from our world and our day to day lives.

;) Someone should invent a bulls*it detector one can use during elections, inaugurals, press conferences, and state of the State/Union speeches....so people can tell exactly when their elected officials are lying their a$$es off.... The dam machine might explode if someone used it to detect all of Bushie's lies though.....

The one I was most looking forward to has already become a reality thanks to Airbus....http://www.airbus.com/en/aircraftfamilies/a380/..but Boeing has been talking about a possible 747 upgrade. Yes, Boeing now has to face the music...the 747 has been outdone.

When we were little, we thought the future was full of well, what we saw in the Jetsons.
I'd like some of that, please.

Any invention to help preserve the environment.
I really do not think robots will ever replace people in any way, shape, or form-tech nuts might love it, but people won't let it happen. I also don't think "total immersion technology" will ever become successful, or computers will be totally everywhere. I think there are periods of slow and rapid advancement, and we're currently going towards the culmination of a major one, and I probably won't live to see anything but the very beginnings of another. The 1900-1920 period was one, probably the 1990-2010 one will be seen as another.

They're called lie-detectors (though unfortunately they're not used on politicians). Problem is, they're not as reliable as their creators (and praisers) claim they are. I think people are still the best BS detectors.

More wind farms like the one in Atlantic City, near the Borgata hotel-casino. The wind farm is actually pretty, and very calming to watch the propellers slowly turning...Other places in NJ should try to erect wind farms to reduce dependency on nuclear energy, coal, and oil....Bet Ol' George W. would love that...

Perhaps its indicative of how people are still so reluctant to be seen as 'different.' Perhaps people think that riding a Segway is the first step to becoming a cyborg, or worse still, a fully-fledged android!

You know, speaking of technology, there's always been a preconceived idea of "the future" especially in TV/movies. Flying cars, space suits, robotic machines, etc. Hell, someone in 1980 probably would've envisioned 2006 to be like that in some degree! ;D
I've often said that I don't think we'll ever (at least, not within 40 or 50 years) have anything like that.
However, I wondered just out of curiousity -- would you guys LIKE to have that or not? And why?

That won't happen as long as we're alive. Has anyone noticed that the whole robotics, VR image of the future that we still stick to essentially has been around since the '50s?

With all the recent advances in genetic modification, and the availability of such powerful computers at an affordable price, I've often thought that there's never been a better time than right now to be a mad scientist. Who knows what some twisted genius is conjuring up in his basement at this very moment? I wouldn't be at all surprised if tomorrow I woke up and the whole world was being terrorized by an army of flying land sharks or something that came out of some nut's laboratory in Albania or some damn place.

Many entrepenuers of concepts such as Windows, Yahoo, Amazon, Google.etc have been mad scientists in a way. I think you need that mad scientist gene in you to really EXCELL (as distinct from merely becoming 'successful).

I think VR is probably the most exciting thing...though even now it sounds a bit gimmicky, but trust me, in about 10-15 years it'll just come out of the blue in a pretty big way. It'll raise some philosophical issues...who would rather spend their 'real' life in a virtual world, where you control EVERYTHING? You can have almost any sensation you've dreamnt possible, but none of it will be real. What is reality anyway? I'd much rather make my own, if you ask me...

Oh yeah, that's an idea I also had. Clone the perfect partner, use growth-inducement hormones (custom-made and tailor-made), and then you have your own, fully-fledged dream man/woman whom could act as a sort of slave. Of course, the ethical implications of such a venture would make it sort of impausible.
