This is a big event in '00s hot 100 history, first time a non hip-hop or American Idol song (Hollaback Girl is kind of hip-hop in a way) has topped the hot 100 since "How You Remind Me" in early 2002. Yay for James Blunt.

Never got James Blunt or that sort of music...so called 'alternative' music (as opposed to really innovative music). I'm not making an judgements here, just an opinion.

'Tis truly a great day for this great land of ours, but you know next week some dumbass rap song will be back at #1 because AMERICANS ARE FOOLS WHO WILL BUY ANYTHING*.
*not meant to reflect those Americans with a decent taste in music.

Here in Canada, 'Talk' by Coldplay is #1. 'Who Says You Can't Go Home' by Bon Jovi is sitting at #2, and with any luck, it will knock Coldplay off the top spot

Never realised American charts were so dominated by hip-hop/R'n'B (our charts are as well, but not to that extent). The idea of a seperate chart for 'black music' now seems arcane.

True, not every song on the chart is great, but there is some really cool stuff around right now. I'm quite happy to see Daniel Powter doing well, for example...

Run It by Chris Brown (R&B) is our current No. 1 single. :P
Sing-Alongs And Lullabies: Songs For Curious George by Jack Johnson (Rock) is our current #1 Album
Infact, our album chart is looking pretty good!
1. Sing-Alongs And Lullabies: Songs For Curious George - Jack Johnson (Rock)
2. Back To Bedlam - James Blunt (Pop-Rock)
3. Based On A True Story - Fat Freddy's Drop (Reggae)
4. Ring Of Fire: The Legend Of - Johnny Cash (Country)
5. Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not - Arctic Monkeys (Rock) predict #1 next week
8. All The Right Reasons - Nickelback (Rock)
10. The Ultimate Collection - Eurythmics (New Wave)
13. The Very Best Of - UB40 (Reggae)
15. In Between Dreams - Jack Johnson (Rock)
and 17, 22, 25, 26, 28, 31, 33, 34, 35, 36, 39.
That's 20 out of 40 non-rap/hiphop/r&b/pop albums in the chart. But who the hell buys singles anyway?

Although he is called "James BLUNT", does that count as a hip hop element? ;D

^Hollaback Girl is definitely hip hop, in fact I'd say all the solo Stefani singles are except "Cool", which is synth pop.

Yeah even though it is labeled as pop in most places, there is hip-hop pop just as there is hip-hop R&B and Hollaback Girl falls into the hip-hop pop category.

They made it big R&B definitely, but I think it's fair to say she was pop that crossed over to the R&B charts instead of the usual other way around at least. But, yeah, definitely agree, there's a lot of hip hop influence on her solo stuff.

And maybe "What You Waiting For", I never really thought hip-hop when I heard that. Luxurious and Hollaback definitely hip-hop though.

Currently, in our Canadian Top 20, there's like no R&B at all. Mostly a mix of pop/rock and country ...
ALBUMS:
01. Curious George:Sing-a-Longs and Lullabies - Jack Johnson
02. Back to Bedlam - James Blunt
03. Confessions on A Dance Floor - Madonna
04. It's Time - Michael Bubl

I just dont get what people see in Blunt. The first few times I heard his songs on the radio I thought it was a girl with a bad cold singing.
I prefer male singers that actually sound like a man personally.
Had to laugh in my morning paper today - just a one line comment about him..... "James Blunt, so dull he could be the 21st century's answer to Chris De Burgh".
made me giggle !!!

LOLOLOL! ;D I totally, totally, agree with that...when I first heard "You're Beautiful" it sounded like somebody running from a burning pike with a bad cold, duller than dull could be. I hate how there are no "real male" singers this decade, and no "real female" singers, even.

When I first heard him I thought he sounded a lot like Rod Stewart, only without the rasp.
Seriously?
I love Rod Stewarts voice, it's very croaky compared to blunts screaming.

Whoa, Jeff.. you thought he sounded like Rod Stewart too? I heard his voice and didn't know who it was, and I thought it actually WAS Rod Stewart.
He gets overplayed, but he's a decent musician.

Rod Stewart sounds like somebody is standing on his throat.
James Blunt sounds like somebody grabbed him by the 'nads.

I like "So Sick", it's not the greatest song ever or anything, but it's a good R&B song.

Ne Yo... it's a terribly boring song for me.. I suppose Pop Radio fans would enjoy it, though.. it's got all the characteristics of a boring, yet well-liked popular song.

It will hang around like here in the UK

For those here who agree with me that Blunt has the most seriously annoying voice on the planet and the drippiest most pathetic songs - visit this link http://www.mix.com.au/bunch_downloads.php and then click on the download titled Tom Gleeson vs James Blunt - You're Beautiful.
Its an Aussie comedian doing a routine over the top of the song and its hilarious !!!!

Another "The Lady in Red" ? No way.
The album Back to Bedlam is currently at #15 on Amazon.com. Which is not bad.
That one song is all I've ever heard by him, and "You're Beautiful" has its flaws -- lyrics are too passive and too simplistic -- but its affirmative hook ("You're Beautiful...you're beautiful, it's true"), its music and its "La-la" part keep it buoyant and interesting. I've even know of someone using the "You're Beautiful" part as their phone's ringtone. ::)
Time will tell concerning that song's worth, but I'd still rather listen to it than say anything idiot Eminem has ever done.
(And on the radio here he says "I was flying high". Does he say something else elsewhere ?)

Oooh I heard them talking about it on air this morning. Its a Breast Cancer fundraising campaign and the main sponsor is Adultshop - a Perth company and Australia's only "adult products supplier" listed on the stock market. For each product ordered - a certain amount of dollars goes to the Breast Cancer Society.
I think the main event that was called Boobalicious - was a big fashion parade fundraiser. Looking thru the photos I see that it was hosted by my neighbour (see the Penguin thread about wanting to kill my annoying neighbour !) - the single most annoying git of a d grade "celebrity" this city has ! Actually - if there is a level of celebrity lower than D grade - pick that grade !
He is so annoying he probably listens to James Blunt !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
