Subject: When Will the '00s Vibe End, and How/Why?

Say how and why! I'll be posting with my reasons for '09 later.

The 00's vibe wont fully end until 2011. But it'll start to die down in late 2007.

I agree.  I can still imagine 2010 being '00s-like, but clearly moving out of it, like 1990 was to the '80s.

Yeah I can see 2009 being like 1989 in the same way. In '89 the grunge movement started to pick up a little steam(Soundgarden and Nirvana both came out with albums that year I think) and 80's music began to get repetitive and stale. I could see that happening in 2009.

I think it'll be by more like 2007 that '00s music starts to get repetitive and stale (hell, it's always been repetitive and stale), but the transition will start to pick up pace in '09, with the pop culture no longer fitting the zeitgeist, and by 2011 I think it'll be pretty firml;y the '10s.

It'll definitely be 2011.  History has shown that the first year of a new decade is pretty much the same as the last decade.  Typically, things don't change until the second year of the decade (2001, 1991, 1981).  The 2010's will progress in a similar fashion although, like history has also shown, there may be some late 00's holdovers up until 2012.

Yeah it wont end at the drop of a hat. I think most of 00's culture will be killed of in 2011 but I could see some of it sticking around until 2012.

First, one has to get what the 00s vibe is. To me, it's a kind of sterile decade. No defining features (e.g. like disco culture), while the basic landscapes.etc are pretty much like the 90s. I think the '00s vibe' will end whe self-automated houses become the norm, many areas of employment (particularly clerical, manual labour.etc) become mechanised (its bound to happen), and conversely many new 'brainpower' jobs are created. Other factors will be the widespread adoption of Digital TV, integration of home entertainment.etc. If I could say one moment, it will be when more houses have computers in their living rooms than in their offices.

I actually think 2005 was when the vibe of the late 90's/early 2000's died out and a new one began. '05 was a big change from '04, but '06 has been continuing the trends that started in '05. This vibe will probably die out around 2009, when a new one begins. This decade can be divided into 2 distinct phases (the 1st half, and the 2nd half).

I disagree with that: ever heard of Emo?  The Reality Television trend is also relatively exclusive to this decade, even though The Real World began in 1992.

I do agree though that the general concept of "coolness" and the domestic issues of this decade are very nineties-like, but the '00s have a different atmosphere to them (well, maybe not compared to the late nineties, but overall).

In recent decades, I agree (the '80s and '90s both had similar "starting" patterns -- 1979 and '89 was the first signs of the next decade, though it didn't start catching fire until 1981 and 1991, and really overtook by 1983 and 1993, respectively).

The '60s didn't start picking up IMO, until early 1964 and got huge in '67. The '70s peak was more 1976-78.

Presidential administrations (especially a new leader) always seem to change things a bit. I have a feeling in the 2008-11 era is when the "00s" will start dying out - in all honesty, I think it's already past its peak.

Meh. I really don't think self-automated houses or "mechanization of manual labor" will become a big issue until I'm an old man. That kind of sheesh scares people. Humans like control. Alot.

I totally agree with this - the Bush presidency represented the '80s/'90s transition.  I do think the very boundary of the '80s and '90s is September of 1991.

Kind of like how the 90's vibe died out when Dubya came in office in '01. I think the same will happen when a new president comes into office in 2009 and like you said the Bush Sr. administartion was the 80's/90's transition the same will be with the next president for the 00's/10's transition.

Yeah I agree.  The '00s to me really started in late 2000 during the Bush/Gore election, but to most people the '00s vibe probably started with 9/11.  Clinton still being around really made 2000 feel like the late 1990s.

Ever heard of the Mayan Calendar, that says the world will end in 2012?  Well, I'm sure the world will end then, but the '00s pop culture era certainly will.

That's a good observation, presidential changes usually signal change. Like Reagan coming into office started the '80s transition, etc., the ones you mentioned...the transition will probably already be starting in '08 but gain speed through '09 and '10 and be pretty much complete, noticeably, anyway, by mid-'11.

Kind of like how the 80's started to transition into the 90's with the '88 election and that being Reagan's last full year in office. Yeah I think the same will happen with the election in '08 as well.

Yeah, definitely.  They'll just be a changeful feeling in the air then, maybe even in 2007.
