Subject: When Will Restrictions Be Placed on Dowloading Music?

Written By: velvetoneo on 02/25/06 at 9:55 pm

I seriously think restrictions will be placed on downloading music in the next few years, one way or another. The record companies are losing too much money from it, I'm guessing. I think they're going to shut down all the P2P filesharing programs, including paid ones, or stop licensing them, and then restrict it either to downloading it from your computer (more expensive, though) or going to a store where you can get an unburnable CD and they rip it onto your USB stick or Mp3 Player for you, complimentary. I'm guessing it'll be 2008 or so.

There already are restrictions on it in the US (which is why Napster had to shut down) but the US government and the recording industry can't really do a whole lot about a P2P based in another country where the copyright laws don't apply...  it's just like gambling... it's illegal here (except on indian reservations) but we can still gamble on online casinos... the online casinos just can't be based in CA.

Maybe if the industry would put out some decent music, people would buy it, rather than download it.  Now I admit that I download music, but for the most part, it's only songs I can't get on CD, a song or 2 from an artist whose CD I don't want to buy because I only like those one or two songs, or songs I have on vinyl, but can't transfer to the computer.

In rare cases, it's live tracks/bonus tracks/outtakes from artists whose CDs I do buy.

Actually I do it to save it, so 5-10 years from now I can hear 2005/06 radio again. I like hearing and watching stuff from the past.

Oh. Yes, I like doing that too.  It's like going back to then.

If you don't keep a "time capsule", it's almost like you weren't fully there in a way.

I taped over a lot of my VHS tapes to the '90s and it really gets me mad now that I did. I had stuff from like 1995 taped and I taped over the darn thing now it's gone forever.

Ohh, that sucks!

Yeah, I wrote a song in 1999 (I guess it could have been 2000, but I think it was '99) on notecards, and even recorded it.  I had some music recorded off the radio from that era too.

I have some of the old commercials on vhs... it's funny to watch them... I have a few of the cherry 7-up ones (when it first came out) remember everything was black and white except for the pink on the can?  and matt leblanc was in them. :)

I still have some tapes lying around my house of cartoons from the mid-90s, I want to get them transferred to DVD and keep the tapes around to show my grandchildren in say the 2050s.

I still have the first few seasons of 21 Jumpstreet that I taped... I'm not sure what years they were, but sometime mid-late 80's..

Yea I would say around 1995, I still have that first tape. Originally I had nickelodeon stuff on there, then I think in '97 I recorded princess diana's funeral, then mr. bean episodes. For some dumb reason I taped over it all and now the tape is mostly blank.

The Princess Di thing was one of the first news things I remember first hand.  It seemed like 1997 had a lot of gory accident stories.

I try not even to think about what the mid-21st century will be like, hopefully it'll be an improvement on this. I think the average street will still look the same. But I'll probably miss the smell of gasoline when it's over. We'll be those funny old guys sitting outside the deli drinking a soda telling a story about VHS tapes and yammering on about how stupid President Bush was, like he's the equivalent of Herbert Hoover is to kids today. I remember the Princess Di funeral, we'll talk about that to our grandchildren and it will be very weird to them...Lord, that is a strange thought.

Yeah ... I mean we'll remember last century, even if only barely.  The 20th Century is slowly becoming an "old century", by 2030 I bet it will be the "that's so old" standard that the 1800s is now.  Because, really, even with the technology of the 20th Century the information was really very fragmented, whereas today it's almost instant with the Internet.  It wasn't until the 1980s that we really got close to the Information Age.

Subject: Re: When Will Restrictions Be Placed on Dowloading Music?

Written By: velvetoneo on 02/26/06 at 12:59 am

However, there're always periods of technological advancement and then those of slower advancement. Like the early 20th century was one, with all the inventions then, then people were busy with the wars and defense. Then the late 20th-early 21st century is another one. From about the 2010s on, I think we'll be less focused on entertainment technology and more on alternative energy sources and such, or we'll get into a cold war with China.

Same here. Most anything before 1994 is stuff my parents taped (sometimes for me), both audio and video. The first stuff was probably mixtapes my uncle made circa 1985.

We moved alot, though. Combine that with some being eaten/accidentally erased, and I have alot less now than I'd like to. Some of it I didn't completely appreciate until a few years had passed. Of course, to me now, four years is almost nothing, but 1987 to 1991 (or age 5-6 to 9-10 felt like a massive jump!).

However, in a way I feel like the stuff that's been lost or erased is a blessing in disguise in a very weird, indirect sense. In that what IS left, I'll take even better care of and treasure forever - i.e. VH1 videos and programming from the early '90s.

BTW, one product I'd spend a million bucks on, would be a machine that could "retrieve" previous recordings on a certain tape. Even though it's physically impossible (when you record something, the tape passes an Erase head, then goes to the Record/Play head, so it beats me how to get it back, but a guy can dream, can't he?). :D

Yea that would be pretty cool to have something like that. Another thing is a lot of my old photos have been damaged due to being in a wet basement, I'm scanning a lot of them in slowly and trying to restore what I can in photoshop but it takes time (the clone tool works wonders for backgrounds).

I've started collecting things from the '80s and '90s and making sure I keep things from then to save to show to a future generation what I lived like as a child. I really wanted to keep our mid-'80s TV, that thing was like one of the first flat-screen TVs, I think. It was huge, about the size of a fancy LCD screen TV, with lots of wood-paneling. It could've been a non-functional museum piece.

I do have a lot of home videos though going back to March 1996 that I taped. I've been taping stuff since I got a camcorder in 1995. I've transfered a lot of those to DVD. What's nice about DVD-Rs is that they can never be taped over, I used to put tape over that little tab on the VHS tapes so I could still tape over them, lol.

Yep. Same reason I like to buy vintage VCR's and boomboxes (not to mention VHS and tapes) at, say Goodwill stores. Not like my room and my house is filled with them or anything, but I have several and buy 'em semi regularly (though I sell some at flea markets or give 'em away to friends).

I want to collect what I can of the '80s so they'll never really "die" if you know what I mean. :)

The best place to go (though it's hit or miss) is varous Goodwill/thrift stores.

A few years back, I saw a dual tape boombox that was the exact model we had from circa 1986-90. That partular one is a real part of my childhood because (I think I've said this elsewhere on the board) back in the day, my dad made us several mixtapes on that one, with alot of entertaining "talking/DJing/voices" inbetween the songs via the built in microphone.

I thought when I got the other one, it would be special to me. I still love it to death, but it wasn't "ours" so it's not quite the same, ya know?

I don't think restrictions will really become a reality, and people will find ways to download illegally....no way will they be able to stop BearShare, LimeWire,Sharezaa, or WinMX..

Besides, the major labels and artists sell CD's with only maybe 2 or 3 good songs on 'em...

I remember the record industry wanted to try to stop home taping....look how well that worked(sarcasm here).

I know what you mean. I went tape crazy in '92 when I started school because I coulnt see my favorite shows during the day anymore I got my parents to record them for me so I could watch them when I got home. Sadly most of those tapes have been recorded over too. :\'( I do like to try to find old tapes. The oldest one I've ever been able to find is a wrestling match that someone recorded in '88 I watch that tape whenever I get nostalgic ;)

As strange as it sounds I like to watch old tapes just as much for the commercials as the actual show on the tape :D
