Subject: 2006

Written By: mach!ne_he@d on 02/15/06 at 1:49 pm

Do you guys think that the time were in right now 2006/'07 is the peak of the 2000's culture just like 1986/'87 was the peak of 80's culture? If so does that mean that in 2008/'09 it'll start to shift to 2010's culture kind of like how 1988/'89 slowly started to shift to 90's culture? Or do you think that the peak of 2000's culture has already passed?

The '00s are a dud of a decade that basically never happened and never will (it's too late.  There would pretty much have to be a huge cultural shift tommorrow in order for us to have a "real decade" distinct from being washed-out '90s), but what would define them most peaked in 2004 and early '05.  Seriously, even today people seem to think of the decade as brand new, even though we're well into the latter part of it now (about 61.4% done).  When it does change, it will be the 2010s culture, not the 2000s culture.  And I wouldn't rule out the 2010s being yet another "pseudo-Nineties" decade.

2004 really defined everything that is '00s: Myspace, the Ipod, Kerry/Bush (and Bush WINNING  >:(), the Emo/retro rock explosion, Usher and Lil' Jon, "corporate grunge", etc.  "LOST" premiered in 2004 and it was probably the very height of the Reality TV era.  Early 2005 was essentially the same as late 2004, and thus is also the peak.  By July of '05 pop culture kind of froze and even went a little back, but either later this year or early next year they'll probably start to change for real.

I tend to agree that '04/'05 was sort of the peak of the '00's culturally. I'm holding out hope that this year will be the first year of dramatic change kind of like '96/'97. Also I think the election of a new president in '08 will really get the ball rolling into the 2010's

Yeah, I sort of think the '00s are a big dud of a decade. I think 04-06 will be seen as the only time that is really, really '00s, and '07 will sort of be the start of the shifting point and by '09 we'll be going towards the '10s, especially if a dem gets into office. I think the '10s will sort of be a return to early-mid '90s stuff that has been discontinued (slow jam soul, singer-songwriters, grunge, intelligent sitcoms.) I think alot of things were continued from the '90s, definitely through the early '00s, but there's sort of a very vacuous, corporate '80s feel and a generally uncertain and "sad" feeling in culture right now, and in the economy that differs it from the '90s, along with different pop culture. I think in rap's history this will be the equivalent of the '70s in rock-rock was basically totally dominant in one form or another until the late '70s, and then started losing ground to rap and other genres in the mid-late '80s.

2006 is what I consider to be in "the Late 00's era" which began in '05, and will probably continue into 2008. This era kind of reminds me of the 1989-1992 era with the political shift, economic downslope, and unique style of music, movies, and trends. It's hard to say what year defines all of the 00's, since the decade can be divided into different phases. 2003 and 2004 was very Early 00's with "crunk" and the iPod phase. The early 00's pop-culture reminded me a lot of the late 80's, when people were having a good time and had a more optimistic outlook of the future.

Yeah I think rap has held on to the mainstream almost as long as rock had in its heyday so I think that the next few years especially into '08/'09 will be the beginning of other musical genre's overtaking rap.

Here's how I see it:

Late '90s: mid-1997 to mid-2001
Early '00s: late 2001-early 2003
Mid '00s: late 2003-early 2005
Late '00s: mid-2005 - 2006+, probably up to 2008 and with influence to 2012

I'd agree. I think the mid-'00's era of late '03-early '05 was the peak of 2000's culture
