Subject: What musical genre will rule the '10s?
Written By: Donnie Darko on 02/09/06 at 1:09 pm
I'm going to say Rap and Indie Rock.
I think by 2011 or 2012 the bling and crunk rap of today will die off, then they'll be a "New Age" of rap which will blow up for a few years, then sort of stick around until about 2030 or so.
As for Rock, I think one of the Indie rock trends of today will become mainstream. Which one I'm not sure.

As long as they're all around, that's what matters to me. No guess or particular interest as to what the future of music will be. I'll focus on the present and getting what I can from it.
Well of course, you can always listen to what you like. I would just like to see some change for once. It's not really important, I just find the evolution of it interesting and fun to watch. 8)

I think the bling and crunk rap will start to become unpopular in 2009 or 2010, then there will be a return to the funness and comparative simplicity and yet lyrically complex rap of the early and mid 1990s. I also think traditional rock music and very hard alt rock influenced by grunge will become popular in the early 2010s. This will be part of a big backing-off out of the constant "style" and excess of the 2000s to less pretentious and excessive styles in the 2010s, echoing the 1990s.

echoing the 1990s? 2006 is still 90s-like, I wouldn't want a third '90s! :o

I don't really see that much '90s in the mid-2000s...there's alot of '80s cultural undertones and overtones coming out, the '90s stuff is leftovers. The music, TV, and the general world outlook are not much like the 1990s. We've sort of been stuck in a weird faux-80s with lots of leftover '90s elements since 2002 that I doubt we'll get out of totally until the early 2010s. Between 1999 and 2002 was what I see as a transitional period. There are alot of '80s things about culture now...the hour-long TV soaps in primetime, the lack of decent intelligent sitcoms, the fetishization of new technology, the popularity of big budget popcorn movies, the influence on indie rock, the totally materialistic and style overtones permeating culture, the color schemes, some of the world outlook, and the fashion is getting more '80s-like by the minute. Alot of rock has big '80s influences, too, and '80s movies and '80s-influenced movies have become pretty popular.

I think the theory is that there is a '20-year' cycle. I.e. in the 80s you look back to the 60s, 90s to the 70s.etc. Personally, I think popular music won't change much. If you look at the history of music, there have been massive changes and then periods of relatively little development (i'm no music historian) say 'hot periods' might be the late 18th century, and more familiarly the modern era with blues, jazz in the earlier 20th century (1920s-30s) a lull in the 40s, Rock'n'roll in the 50s, and of course 'progressive' rock and 'Rock' as opposed to Rock and Roll which had its routes around the late 50s. This period of rapid change occured throughout the rest of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. It was only about 1993-94 when it seemed to slow down somewhat.
I think so called 'alternative' and 'progressive' will become more mainstream, alot of electronic music with a grass roots, back to basics movement (like the folk music of the early 60s).

I agree there's going to be a big back to basics movement in 2010s rock, including a revival of alot simpler pre-1980s rock styles and a more pared-down version of grunge. I also think true singer-songwriters will become more popular (a la Jeff Buckley, Tori Amos, Liz Phair in the 1990s), rap will become alot less bling-y, and people will get ticked off at the commercialism and overprocessed sound of the indie rock scene and stop sitting around downloading music on their computer all day and actually embrace true indie rock. I do think alot harder music will come into fashion sometime in the next decade...

It may be too early to tell but my vote goes for something new. I mean the current music's been the mainstream now for at least 7 years so i would think it would only be a matter of time before people get fed up with it and search for something new.

I think that grunge with be revived in the 2010s. The grunge movement was too shortlived and has been pretty much dead since 1995. I think that by the 2010s people with be sick of gangsta rap, and pop, so grunge will come be the answer to a new and opposite sound. I also think that jam bands/ska will become more popular as well as piano/songwriters with styles similar to Billy Joel, Randy Newman, and Harry Nilsson

I agree. There will be some revival of grunge in the 2010's for sure. After all in 2011 it will be 20 years since grunge first hit big

Hopefully, 80s-styled rock and 70s-styled rock will make a come back - and maybe even some of this psychedelic rock. I am a little disappointed that the War in Iraq did not bring on another hippie movement, like the Veit Nam War did.

In the 2010's we'll see the third wave of teen pop.
