all right. just got this. i don't think they've added any shows lately and i was originally going to follow them around the country like a deadhead but my HuG needs have subsided lately since i've started shifting back into the soft rock exteme of my soft-rock/heavy metal mood swings (who's to blame for my relapse into soft rock? i think you know who you are... ;) ) and the fact that they're apparently going to be playing as a bass-less "uber power trio." which idea sorta frightens me.

but i'm thinking i might be trying to hit the NY show on oct. 9th and the show right down the road at jaxx on nov. 4. cuz even though they may have lost their way in all the crystal meth and firing their bass players and renouncing the cool industrial psychedelia for the death metal mercilessness, they're still HuG and i will always love them. my love is unconditional.

now... who lives in NY? howard? up for some death metal?

haha. i don't really get it either. i love them but i don't know why. i think it's their whole b-movie thing. the godzilla clips and aliens and stuff in their video, it's pretty great. musically they're not necessarily any great shakes but i like their whole aesthetic.

I'll give you a brief story to explain why I love HuG.

I was on the bus last night, coming back from downtown right.. and I stick on my mp3 player and have HuG going. I turn it up Uber loud right.. anyway, after sitting down and relaxing to the raucous sounds in my head for a while.. I open my eyes and discover that there is a wide space around me where nobody else is sitting. That is the power that HuG has!

i have now touched both hanzel and gretyl.

it was very... LOUD. but fun.

i love the blurb about how you must buy the new album or else be left to die with the unworthy. but just the names of the tracks makes me think they're in a rut creatively, i'm expecting something like their last album, which i wasn't that crazy about.

it seemed like the right time to do it, seeing as how we're coming up on the 30th anniversary of the release of "return from witch mountain," which will be happening in march. i havent read anywhere what president bush is planning to commemorate this, but i figure a ticker tape parade in manhattan, much like happened on V-E day, would be appropriate, if a tad understated. i'm not sure where the commemorative monument will be located here in washington, but i'm thinking it could replace the jefferson memorial. it's not like anyone really gives a rat's ass about jefferson anyhow.

Took me a while, but I finally got caught up on HuG.

It ain't no S(pace, honest) S(hip, really, that's what the "SS" stands for!) Death Star Supergalactik, but it's pretty sweet.

For those new to the thread, Hanzel und Gretyl are an industrial death metal band.  They're not Nazis, they're what you'd get if you took the Nazis, got rid of the genocidal parts, but kept the cool uniforms and the militaristic beats, and used a thousand Terminator-2 style robots for the percussion section of the orchestra.

How can you listen to something called "Bavarian Bierhaus Blood" ("Steins and skulls! Blood and shiat! ?Sex? and Schnapps! Death and beer! Yowwwwww Bavarian beerhouse blood!") with a straight face? 

You can't make fun of your enemy unless you know him, and HuG have (as always) done their homework.  The real world's Nazis promised their citizens "Bread and blood" (food for the average working German schlub, and ethnic cleansing for those not of sufficently pure blood).  Years before taking power, the real world Hitler's "Beer Hall Putsch" was a comedic failure that in a sane world would have permanently ended his political career -- but as fifty million dead would tell you, ours is an imperfect world.  So here we are, some 75 years later, and there's an army of a thousand chrome-clad cybernetic death machines pounding out an absolute mockery of the whole thing, loosely interspersed with obligatory samples from Adolf and the screaming deranged hordes at the Nuremberg Rally. 

Hanzel und Gretyl are a guilty pleasure, but the historian in me loves them, if for no reason other than that your garden-variety neo-Nazi doesn't realize he's being laughed at, not laughed with.  And the industrial metal freak in me digs the way that HuG have managed to still latch on to the testosterone-fueled insanity that fueled genocides of WW2, right from Track 1's "Ubermensch/Ubuerfrau" (lit. "Overman/Overwoman", colloq. "Superman/Superwoman"). 

The music is plain, it's simple, it's sophomoric, and half of the lyrics are emitted from the voice synthesizer of a Speak And Spell (really, the first 30 seconds and the last 30 seconds of the second track!), and it's exactly what HuG is all about.  It's fun, it's energizing, and it's a visceral reminder that we all have the capacity for evil within us, and all it takes is to unlock it is a suitably charismatic voice.  And to be grateful that at least this voice is reminding us not to take it seriously. 

And in that vein -- bring on the Mayan prophecies of doom in 2012, bring on global warming, bring on the Iranian nuke.  I'm gonna be flying down to Chichen Itza, raising successive rounds of schnapps und bier to the (set up your speak-and-spell now to spell it out one letter at a time!) "F-u-k-k-e-n-u-b-e-r" Death Party that is HuG, and laughing my ass off as the army of cybernetic death machines lay waste to what was once Earth.  Loud and Proud, baby.  Lederhosen will set you free!
