Subject: Is Numetal dead?

I'd say "Partially". Bands like Staind and Nickelback still fare well, but people have for the most part disowned Korn and Limp Bizkit.

Past its peak for sure, but still lingering.
Interestingly, it seemed to arise from rap/metal (which was basically around just in 1999 and 2000. Maybe a little of 2001 too) -- this was stuff like Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, etc. Honestly I was never a fan of the stuff at all, I thought it was silly, but I got used to it.
Nu metal is more bands like Godsmack (for whatever reason, I actually do like them a little bit), Puddle of Mudd, and I guess since Linkin Park is still around, they'd count too.
It was definitely dying by 2004. I know Papa Roach is still coming out with records, but you don't hear about them too much anymore, so it's definitely fading. By 2008 it'll probably be out.

I'd say this:
Hair Metal: 1986-1991
Grunge: 1991-1994
Alternative: 1995-1997
Rap Metal/Pop-Punk: 1998-2000
Nu Metal: 2000-2002
Emo: 2003+
There was also a Britpop movement from about 1994/95-'97, a brief classic rock revival in 2003-'04 and a return of New Wave in late 2004/early '05.

I agree for the most part but I would push the start of Nu Metal back farther as especially Korn was huge in 98 and in 99.
