I know that The Damned were the first British Punk band to release a single and album in America, so they kick started the whole UK Punk movement :)

Sadly, most of the TRL idiotstoday think punk is Avril Lavinge & Good Charlotte. :P :( >:(

Don't forget Ska. Ska derived from the roots of Jamaican Reggae, and ironically become anthem music of the first British "Skinheads" in the early '70s. The original Skinhead movement was anti-hippie, nationalistic, working class, and--stretching irony to the nth degree--racist at times. I always wondered why those racist skinhead bands played music invented by black people. If you're so g*dd*mned white Aryan, why aren't you playing Scottish bagpipes or German oompa-pa music!
The uniqueness of California surf rock, another proto-punk style, as developed by artists such as Dick Dale, the Ventures, and the Aqua-Velvets comes from the influence of Gypsy culture on the genre, that is indo-European nomadics ranging from Eastern Europe to the Middle East. Dick Dale is generally credited as the founder of Surf Rock. His father was Polish and his mother was Lebanese. Surf rock guitar riffs sound more Hungarian than rhythm and blues!

who cares who started it???!!!!..... ( i really wish the german exchange student would not stand in front of me bcuz i can't concentrate on the computer screen ;)) anyways sorry.... uh yeah honestly it doesn't matter who started it. i mean is it gonna change how great the music is bcuz one certain band started it? it's all good.... the U.K. and america both had an equal influence on punk.... though a lot of "punk" kids are wearing U.K. flags on their clothes. i must admit i myself have a few on my clothes, but that doesn't mean i think im cool or anything. i think punks would get more respect and attention if they fought over religion, politics and made a stand on what they believe rather than fighting over who started punk music or who's a poser or not.
