Subject: New DVD Release of Titanic
Written By: quirky_cat_girl on 11/14/05 at 11:31 pm
Has anyone seen this yet? They claim there is an alternate ending, deleted scenes, etc...and I was wondering if anyone has seen it and could fill me in...is the alternate ending any better (like Jack surviving)?
Erin :)

in the alternate ending the ship does not sink. Jack still dies though.

I always thought the "alternate ending" thing for Titanic was just a joke, a play on the fact that a film about the R.M.S. Titanic can only have one ending.
i.e., hitting the iceberg in the north Atlantic and sinking...

I realize that the ending can only be that the ship sinks...but I thought that perhaps they would make an ending where Jack survived, instead of freezing to death in icy waters...just curious, I suppose.

I preordered my copy the other week - it should arrive next week or the week after - I have no idea what the alternative ending was - other than that it failed with test audiences.
Maybe old Rose didnt throw the diamond back into the sea ? Maybe she kept it and gave a wicked smile to the camera - then a wink !!
Whatever it is - I hope DCraprio still dies regardless !! hehehe

My problem with the film has ALWAYS been that it is falsely motivated.... Doesn't Rose ask Bill Paxton early in the film if he found the the necklace? This question is the catalyst that gets her on board his ship for the expedition and she then tells her story....
1) some of the scenes (that are supposed to be part of her flashback) don't have her in them so how could she possibly know what dialogue took place?
2) If she had the stupid necklace the whole time why ask if he found it... she didn't need it to get on the boat... being a Titanic survivor alone would have been enough to get her on the boat so using the necklace is false motivation for the story I was really disappointed with James Camerons direction of this film. He is usually a good director.

The film was too long then and is too long now!

Because it was in the script?

Because it was in the script?
Yeah but it didn't have to be in there. The writer's don't control the film scripts the Producers and Directors do so that was easily fixed.
She asked if he had found the necklace to get his attention.

There was still no reason for her to lie to get on board the ship.

But the record showed that Rose died.

His acting was pretty bad, wasn't it? Too bad, too. He did a wonderful job in What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
Yes, Rose shunned her old life. When she was asked her name she said it was Rose Dawson. Rose Dewit Bukater was declared dead. (I loved the movie, can you tell? ;) )

Well I finally had a chance to sit down and watch the extras.
The original ending - well I didnt like it and I can see why James C cut it to bits for the ending we saw in the cinemas. I wont say too much in case you want to wait and see your copy - but suffice to say it was turned into a 3 ring circus to the point where it was almost a comedy and felt the need to explain the whole movie for dumb people.
I really did prefer the ending that we saw in the cinemas - more mystical and more "think for yourself".
In the deleted scenes - I could see why most were cut but there were a couple I think could have been left in. One that would have got a great laugh - Molly Brown calling to a waiter "More ice please" - while in the background the iceberg passes the windows !! And one which would have explained why Rose's hair was loose when she attempts suicide - she has a screaming fit in her stateroom and throws things around and pulls her hair from its bun - before running to the end of the ship.
The other deleted scenes - some featuring the telegraph officers and general extras getting a line or two. hmmmm oh and one where she actually goes to find Jack the morning after he saves her.
The "making ofs" are great - the main reason I bought it. I still have a tonne to watch.
