Subject: Boondocks debuts on Adult Swim this Sunday 11pm... anyone else excited?

Written By: ChuckyG on 11/04/05 at 2:57 pm

It's pretty rare for me to anticipate a new show as much as I anticipate this one.  I've been reading this comic strip off and on for years in the Boston Globe.  It's very satirical and biting.  Love the clips I've seen so far, though the animation looks a little cheap, though light years beyond most of the Adult Swim original offerings.

It's also the second debut this season of a show that the Fox network passed up, "Everybody Hates Chris" was the other.  That show posted some impressive numbers for the UPN network.  I guess Fox only does crappy reality shows now.

It's got mixed reviews so far, but most reviews miss the mark anyways.

I never miss a Boondocks comic.  The artist/author seems very knowledgeable and current with the events of the day and that makes it all the more amusing.

Heard heard of the comic strip, but worth checking, espcially from the promos.  :)

Based on current events, only time will tell if they'll pull it off like "South Park" or get lame like "American Dad"...

I wonder if it'll be as edgy as the strip? Hope so. That Grandfather cracks me up.

ok, I love the strip....I just have a feeling that the cartoon is going to turn out like the Dilbert cartoon....it won't translate well.

Dilbert was (and still is) an amazing comic strip, but when it went to TV, it just lacked something from the comic....possibly because they were trying to put a daily three panel gag into a 30 minute sitcom format.  Boondocks seems like it's going to be the same thing....from the commericals already it seems like theyre adopting a sitcom narritive format, and that's going to be what kills them.

Also, many of Boondocks jokes only work in short comic strip gags.  The longer they drag out the joke (or round the character) the more they ruin it's timing and potency.  Look at Dilbert again: the comic strip works because those little incompencies (is that a word?) in life happen sporaticly in short doses.  When they took it to a sitcom, it didnt have the impression of being a bunch of problems pileing up, but more the impression that everyone in the world except Dilbert is a moralless moron and imcompetant, and I was truely surprised Dilbert just didnt go on a rampage with a gun throughout his office.  And thats just the first episode...in later episode they fully adapted the sitcom format when we got situations liek Alice and Dilbert make a bet on who can do the most selfless deed (though that episode did make a good point).  I can see the same problems happening with Boondocks.  A lot of the times, the only reason I laugh at Boondocks is that Huey is so patheticly extremist and uninformed...and Aaron McGurder knows this!  I remember the time that Huey was serriously considering Santa Claus to be a vehicle of the Republicans and that Barbara Bush could easily fill the guise.  A lot of the jokes are based upon Huey's absent minded conspiracy theories....now, the cartoon seems like theyre going to do the same thing as Dilbert...everyone in the world are imcompetant racist morons...except Huey...it's gonna fail.

Other than that, I cant wait to see it.  I love the stip.

Huh? It sounds like you're saying you think McGruder's going to turn the entire concept (and his perspective) on its head?  From framing Huey as the radical with ill-founded extremist views, to actually portraying the world as Huey sees it?  I don't quite get it.

If these comic strip-to-TV people would make a half hour show of shorts, maybe 2 or 3 per show, it would probably be better. But then they would have to come up with more plots, wouldn't they.
If it keeps it's edge, I'll probably still watch it.

I get the feeling he's going to change the concept completely so that it would work better in a "sitcom" environment.  DId you read the interview McGruder did with Newsweek two weeks ago?  In it he was describing some of the action that was going to be happening in one episode of the show...it was basicly an "edgy" sitcom.  The commericals don't deny this theory.  Look at that commerical where Huey tells his grandpa that he cant turn him into something he's not: "The hell I can't" answers the grandpa...now, other than that being not at all the humor style of the strip, but it also brings more characterization into the characters....now, ususally Im all for characterization...Im a HUGE proponent of it...but not when it hurts everything else...Huey isnt a round figure in the strips, he's meant to be slightly flat and broad so that he could represent anyone thats an uninformed extremist.  By making Huey's characterization well-rounded, he no longer is making a satirical political statement, but making a show about some kid who says that everyone is racist (and from that commerical with the guard at the Garden party gate, it seems like he may be right), and the comedy that flows from that.  Political statement gone in favor of situational comedy (going to a garden party?).  I hope that's clear.

I just read the article on Boondocks that was in Newsday today...Ive gotten some hope back.  McGruder says he's "expanding" his ideas....that could be a good thing, or that could be a horrible thing...we'll see.

I dunno "Adult Swim" is circling the drain!  The new hillbilly octopi show, whatever that is, is really dumb.  They've also picked up "Baby Blues" again.  Good effing grief!  Well, I'll see if "Boondocks" is any good...

You only think that because you forget about the awful shows they've run in the past too.  It fits in more with their 15 minute stuff, that tends to be "out there" with crappy animation and strange humour that probably only appeals to the 0.1% of people who own a TV.  Tom Goes the Mayor and 12 oz Mouse are just as absurd (and bad).  I rather appreciate that they'll try something that might not sound good.  I'm sure if someone pitched the idea of Harvey Birdman they'd never get in the door at most networks.

As for the Boondocks, it was good but not great.  I TIVO'd it and watched it this morning before work. One of the complaints I had read about was they didn't do enough with the the son of the banker who was a gulf war vet.  I think they did plenty, it wasn't supposed to be a focal point of the episode at all.  The flow of the show is a little slow, but then again it's only a slower pace when compared to the other stuff on right now.  Compared to the first season of the Simpsons it's probably a fast pace with the jokes.

it's certainly better than most of the new shows that Adult Swim has introduced lately.

alright, my analysis:

THe show had some really funny moments.  I thought the raincoat bit was histerical.  There was more too...I dont remember what though.  None of this humor seemed like it was the same humor of the strip (which isnt necessarilly a bad thing... it was still funny)...in fact, I got an eerie recoglection of the animated version of the The Tick when they did that cheese joke...it really was the same type of joke they do.

Anyway, The show passes on humor, but it doesnt pass on a good adaption.  It fell into the exact problems I said.  Everyone but Huey is the ignorant racist or person who means well but does wrong.  That's not what the strip is about.  I was actually ready to come onto the boards and appologuise for ever doubting Aaron McGruder after the opening (yeah, it was on a commerical, but I think it still worked well), but the episode just went downhill from there.  This isnt the Boondocks that I read everyday in the paper.  Tis a shame.

"Tom Goes to the Mayor" and "12 oz Mouse" are completely annoying and miserable.  "Harvey Birdman" rocks, "CARR, Stick adn Hooch" or whatever that is is middling.  "Family Guy" is great unless it's one I've already seen five times.  "Futurama" always has a few good gags, but never enough to carry the whole show, ditto "Sealab 2021."  "Oblongs" and "Mission Hill" were ingenius, if only there were more!  "Home Movies" was amusing, though icky in just sort of an icky sort of way sometimes.  "Baby Blues" is a retarded version of "Rugrats."  "Venture Brothers" never lives up to its potential, and even if it did, so the fawk what?  "Inuyasa" lowers the collective IQ of its viewership, and that dumb detective stuff they show real late is "buttimation" to coin a term.

"Boondocks," I still dunno yet 'cuz I haven't seen it.

They catch is, they've shown every "Family Guy" at least 308590438098908654 times... "Tom Goes to the Mayor" and "12-Ounce Mouse", especially the latter, are quite possibly the worst shows I've ever seen. "The Oblongs" was mildly entertaining. Honestly, "Home Movies" was like.. good in a really weird way.

My friend and I make fun of one quote from "12-Ounce Mouse" all the time.

Which quote is that?  Anyway, aren't they going to be showing the newer "Family Guy" episodes?  Sometimes with FG, I'll see whay episode it is and just tune in for the funniest gag!
What bugs my most about "Tom" is how obvious it is the creators of the show think they're being really, really, really, really, really clever...and they never catch on to how stupid and annoying the show is, and nether does Comedy Central because the keep renewing the piece of excrement.  I loved "Obllongs" because it dealt sardonically with class issues!

You ever see the preview about the corndogs? Any time either corndogs or the word 'racecar' shows up, we quote it. It goes like this:

"Whoa. I'm in, like, a forest of corn dogs. I could.. live here... because if get hungry, I could EAT the corndogs."
"What are you, like, a mouse?"
"I'm, uh."
"Cause you look like a damn mouse or something. I mean."
"Yeah, I'm.."
"D'ya know 'racecar' backwards is 'racecar'? Eh? You're thinking about it, aren't ya?"

It's so stupid, it was memorable, and we quote it to confuse people.  ;D

TOm goes to the mayor is a truely horrible show.  One episode made me actully laught more than once.  About two episodes made me chuckle due to a good gag, and all the rest cause me to hate the show because they arent the least bit funny.

12 ounce mouse is even worse.

It's OK, nothing good or bad.

The animation looked anime inspired though.
