Subject: Parents' Group latest list of bad shows.

Written By: JamieMcBain on 10/20/05 at 12:14 am

According to The Parents Television Council, Family Guy, The War at Home, American Dad, The O.C., That '70s Show, Arrested Development, Cold Case, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Desperate Housewives, and Two and a Half Men, are the wrost shows on TV for kids and family, while American Idol, Three Wishes, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Everybody Hates Chris and The Ghost Whisperer are the best family shows.

Kids shouldn't even be watching shows like Cold Case, CSI and Desperate Housewives  ::)

If these Parent's groups had their way, it would be nothing but PBS on every channel 24/7  :(

So many shows today have to be censored in some parts because of kids.  I wish just once, people could swear on TV or show nudity on TV

On the CityTV channel here in Ontario, they allow swearing on alot of the shows, but the weird part:  They don't bleep out f*ck, but when someone says motherf*cker, they bleep out the word mother.  Always found that quite odd

If I was a parent I wouldn't want my kids watching any of that garbage...but they'd watch it anyway, and I'd just grimace and go back to listening to my John Cage CDs on my headphones.
:-\\
Anyway, the only ones from either list I like are "CSI" and "Family Guy."  "American Dad" is OK, but it's like Seth MacFarlane taking all the "Family Guy" jokes too far...and "Family Guy" thrives on taking the joke too far as it is!

Those shows on Religious TV channels are far worse than any of them shows listed.  ::)

I would rather be the person who decides what my kids (if I ever have any) watch, then the government, some "concerned parent", and/or group decide what they should watch....  ::)

The thing that made me laugh is that these kids are watching shows that are on when they should be asleep! No wonder, teachers (including me) struggle to get them to learn the next day. They are too busy watching shows past 8 pm! Put their butts to sleep!!!!!
Sorry, if a child is watching Adult Swim (which starts at 11 pm and is clearly for adults, hence the name), we have a problem!

Let's focus on parenting, not the shows! These shows aren't for children! Get it through your thick skulls people! I honestly swear people are getting dumber by the minute. It really bothers me.

I'm not too crazy about the idea of kids watching some of those shows, particularly Family Guy and Desperate Housewhores.  I don't quite understand why people have a problem with an organization advising people what their kids should or shouldn't watch.  Sure, some of their opinions are silly, but so are some of TV Guide's.  ;)

I agree! I mean really!

I think this concerned parents group is part of the right-wing noise machine that's trying to kill PBS.  After all, characters like the Teletubbies and Ernie and Bert promote homosexuality.

When I was a little kid, we didn't need TV to teach us bad words.  We overheard 'em all from our parents and older siblings, then we shared them with our peers in kinny-garten.  Even wrote 'em on the toilet wall with purple crayon!

Ah yes.. brent l. bozzel III at it again. Is he still attatched to the PTC?
Are they still manipulating statistics?

Now, if i remember correctly they're only supposed to take in to account Network television.
In a study they did a few years ago, not only were cable tv repeats used in the study, but PAY PER VIEW events where as well.

Yeah, Brent Bozo.  He's a thug.  And yes, they still fudge the numbers and b*tch and moan on FOX News.  Would you pick a guy like "Brent" to help decide what's healthy for your kids?  They think Extreme Makeover and American Idol are good for kids.  Oh sure!  I haven't seen "Everybody Hates Chris," but I was surprised to see it on the approved list.  Usually a guy as vulgar as Chris Rock gets blackballed forever by the Right.

Hypothetically speaking, it wouldn't bother me much to see a poster of Fiddy Cent on my teenage daughter's wall, but it would scare the living bejeepers out of me to see a poster of Pat Robertson!
"Where did we go wrong, Honey?"

I would say "Gray's Anatomy" is one of the worst shows to show children. Doctors having unprotected sex with each other and other doctors acting unprofessional is not my cup of tea. The same with Nip/Tuck.

I don't really know how to take this post.....let me just say that him watching Adult Swim was not an everyday occurrence and when I found him watching it, I blocked the channel from the TVs.  All of my kids go to bed at 9 (they start getting ready around 8-ish) and are up at 7.  My 2 older ones will sleep through the house exploding, but my 4 y.o. is a very light sleeper (even my husband snoring 3 rooms away will wake him) and once he is woken up, he is usually awake for a few hours and will sometimes go in the basement and play until he is tired again.  When I find him out of bed, I immediately put him back, but unless he wakes me, I have no way of knowing he's not in bed.

Not talking to you, crazymom!!!! 4 year olds will be 4 year olds. I just used Adult swim as an example (b/c I know mothers in my PTA that doesn't have a problem with it.)

What's wrong with that?  There's a whole variety of stuff on PBS -- and most of it is good quality.

There should be a balance. PBS is great, however, there are dramas and comedies that are great as well. Family shows aren't confined to PBS.

There's drama and comedy on PBS too.  God, I hope we haven't gotten to the point where we feel that network television is an important part of a child's development and socialization.

Actually, if we have, that would explain a lot.

Yes, however, PBS isn't the sole proprietor of a child's socialization.

Yeah, and SpongeBob SquarePants is a flaming queer-o..NOT!!

The foul language I learned as a kid, I picked up from listening to my alcoholic parents fight! What a wonderful example to set for a kid...(sarcasm here)

Now that's something to think about.
I think people like Pat Robertson propagate predjudiced opinions against gays and lesbians that are truly HATEFUL. And they use Bible verses to hide behind them. Kids need to learn to ACCEPT gays and lesbians rather than hate them. And Robertson's show is just as bad as the shows listed when it comes to planting predjudice in people's brains!

I remember when we were about eight, my friend and I were standing on the corner trying out our new expletives.  I can't repeat the phrase my friend was uttering, but this lady horned in and scolded, "You shouldn't use those words when you don't even know what they mean."  My friend replies,"Oh, I know what it means, it's when a guy...."  Then the lady breaks in, "Okay, okay, okay, just watch your filthy mouths out here!"

Same here.  I learned a lot overhearing my father describing his bosses and his co-workers!

Actually, my parents weren't very restrictive about the words we used.  My mother made time, place, and manner clear.  I'd be in trouble if I swore in a public place, or swore around my grandparents or something.  Our friends thougth our parents were cool because the weren't uptight about swearing and stuff.
I just wish they didn't use all those same words hurt other when the fought...and they fought a lot!

I also learned from my parents how to...
Throw things around when you're angry...and bean others over the noggin with 'em

Use creative name calling to get one's way

Drink to numb one's pain and make it all better..

I do NONE of the above needless to say.

I always hear how if you grow up around a certain kind of behavior, you're more likely to act that way yourself.  Maybe so, but I abominated the way my dad treated people and have made a concerted effort throughout my life not to do the same thing!

It's funny, when I'm around a couple who starts arguing I still seize up like I'm bracing for something really awful to happen.  Then I'm relieved when it's resolved two minutes later with no hard feelings.  I sure wish my parents could have been like that!
