Subject: Desperate Housewives

Written By: Lara Spencer on 09/21/05 at 11:17 am

What is with the Desperate housewives phenomenon?  It's about a bunch of sleazy suburbanites fighting over men like high school sluts, dressing in clothes 20 years too young for them and having affairs.  This is what people find entertaining?  No wonder Britney Spears and Paris Hilton are big stars -- everybody celebrates sleaziness and bad values and treats it like a joke.

I watched one episode of this show and it seemed like nothing but a spoof show of a soap opera or something to that nature....I don't know what people find so amusing about it either...it was rather boring in my opinion.

That's the thing, it's not just some boring stupid show.  It shows how screwed up our society is.  We have people just like that in our neighborhoods?  That's sick.  They should be run out of town and forced into their own little trashy neighborhoods.  Do you want your kids playing with these type of people's kids?  Do you want these people teaching your kids?  I"m not a prude AT ALL, but that is just disgusting.  These people are degenerites.

Just because the parents are degenerates doesn't mean the children are. Besides, some of the most normal looking people in the world have their own dirty little secrets and quirks.

As for me, I've never sat through an episode of it. Too much hype about it to interest me.

Well, I don't know how someone with bad morals can teach their children good ones!

Well, I don't want to associate with them either!  I don't care how normal or respectable they pretend to be!  It's what they're really like that matters, isn't it?

Oh puhleeze ::) Have you even watched the show? The 2 characters that I would call "sleazy" don't even HAVE kids (who, btw are the same ones who dress "20 years too young for them"). How is this show any different from a soap opera? Or 1/2 of the other stuff that's on TV? There are much WORSE things to be watching.... And, exactly how would you tell this? It's called a "secret" for a reason ::)

I wasn't talking about the CHARACTERS having kids, I was talking about people LIKE that living in our neighborhoods.

Welcome to reality.....and it doesn't matter WHAT part of town you live in, they're EVERYWHERE :D

I know.  So are a lot of bad things.  I just don't think we should treat it like a joke or entertainment.  :)

I don't really see the big deal about Desperate Housewives.  It's pretty much an updated version of an 80's night time soap.  I only wathc it cause Eva Longoria is hot  :o

It's just a cheap copy of "Sex In The City" only they're MARRIED with so-called morals ::)

Well, if you don't want to treat "bad things" as jokes or entertainment, then you must not enjoy much entertainment because someone can find bad in ANYTHING ::)
Absolutely right. Though sometimes people see only one or the other :-\\

ya, I heard that was pretty good. Right now I am hooked on "The 4400" on USA. The 2nd season just ended and season 3 isn't coming out until next summer....but, I just ordered the complete season 1 on DVD...so that should tide me over for awhile.

That's cool. All I can tell you about Dead Like Me is that they had no idea the show would be cancelled and yet the last episode was "Perfect" and I hope you check it out someday. That last episode has inspired me to spend the night at my son's grave overnight from October 31 to November 1st (All Saints Day) :D

They are seriously a bunch of whiny suburbanites with nothing much to do with themselves!!!!! At least the girls of sex and the city had careers and true sex!!!

The appeal to me is that I KNOW people who are like each and every one of the characters (including myself - I'll leave it up to you to guess which one ;)) and stuff like that actually DOES happen in my neighborhood.....and, since it would be rude to stand out on my porch and watch it happen like a nosy neighbor, it's like I'm watching my own neighborhood at times ;D

I'll give you 3 guesses as to which one is most like me... ;)

I love this show, and like CM said, I KNOW people like that!    Its entertainment, and I LOVE it.  And BTW, I have a respectable job, wonderful kids, and I DO have morals...so there.

I'm glad you like the show, it's just not everyone feels the same way. Like the show or hate it, I respect everyones opinions, though I don't always agree with them.

I really don't even know!  I saw the promos for it last year and was never interested in watching it! :-\\

Can someone please tell me how this show is worse than the daytime soap operas or the nighttime shows like Dallas, Dynasty and the like?  I know some of you who are bashing it watch soaps....and you can honestly sit there with a straight face and b!tch because these women "have no morals" (btw, 2 of them have slept with more than 1 person, how many soaps can say the same)?  PUHLEEZE ::)
I don't watch the Soaps anymore...waste of time, IMHO. As for bashing this show, I'm not bashing so much as I'm just not interested in it at all. Those who do like it? That's just fine :)

I agree with the "Other" people in this very thread who don't like it but also know everyone can't all agree on everything.

Even the "ho" didnt make it into bed with someone yet...

Although, I will say, when was the last time I saw someone chained in a basement on a soap opera!  :o :D

I love how some people are defending this crap, comparing it to soap operas.  What high cultural standards some of you have.

If I talk about how bad pickpockets are, will some of you defend them for not being as bad as car thieves?  Is nothing unacceptable on its own terms, or is it okay as long as something else is worse?

I honestly don't know what the big deal about it is...I don't particularly care for the show...but for those that do....then let them be.  We all have our own opinions and things that we like and dislike. I happen to really love the show Queer as Folk....some people would question that show's promiscuity level...but you know what? I love it!

Ok, fine.  But in this society, it can be very hard to be an educated, smart, successful woman who by the way also just happens to be beautiful, sexy, desireable and luscious.  Men and women often treat you like you're supposed to be some king of immoral, whoring tramp, partly because the MEDIA is always presenting these stereotypes and very often PUBLIC thinks its 'just entertainment'.

Do you have any idea how much enrollment in forensic science courses has gone up since the success of the 'CSI' franchise?  It's because the MEDIA presented science as COOL and INTERESTING and VALUABLE.  That's a GOOD thing!  But it also shows the tremendous POWER of the MEDIA in our society.  I'm not an advocate of censorship or anything of the kind, I just think it's useful for us as responsible men and women to be MINDFUL of our attitudes and our ACCEPTANCE of negative images.  I think it would benefit us as a society to give more respect to POSITIVE images and for us to reject more NEGATIVE ones.  No offense meant to anyone.  I just want us to understand what our CHOICES and OPINIONS can mean.  It's one thing for us to enjoy entertainment if we're adults with our values intact, but these same things can be very HARMFUL to teenagers and young people who take their clues of acceptable attitudes and behaviors from adults.

I agree with that totally.  There are too many young people who are being influenced by the media of "how they should look, act, etc".
