Subject: Top Ten Film List For 2002
Written By: zcrito on 08/28/05 at 11:11 pm
Well it's been out for 3 years now and I've just recently seen it.
Every 10 years the British Film Institute sends out questionaires to critics and directors asking what their favorite films are. They've been doing these polls since 1952 and they place the results in the film magazine called "Sight & Sound".
This is 2002's top ten from film critics...
1. Citizen Kane (Welles)
2. Vertigo (Hitchcock)
3. La Règle du jeu (Renoir)
4. The Godfather and The Godfather part II
5. Tokyo Story (Ozu)
6. 2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick)
7. Battleship Potemkin (Eisenstein)
7. Sunrise (Murnau)
9. 8 1/2 (Fellini)
10. Singin' In the Rain (Kelly, Donen)
Not a bad list of films. As for me, I've seen all but Tokyo Story, so for favorites from this list I'd go with Citizen Kane, Vertigo, Sunrise, 8 1/2 & Singin' In the Rain.
It also looks like Citizen Kane & La Règle du jeu are hanging tough -- they've made it in the top 10 the last several times. All the rest sort of pop in every now and then or it's their first time in the top ten.

It's been awhile since I've seen it but I would rate it higher than Godfather Pt2.

Not a very good list. Psycho and Apocalypse Now should be on every top 10 list.

There are some films that seem to be missing. I looked at the entire list, and am surprised at how low some of them are.
35  Modern Times
35  The Seventh Seal
35  The Third Man
45  City Lights
45  Intolerance
45  Lawrence Of Arabia
45  The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
And totally missing is Metropolis, Nosferatu, Sparticus, Dr. Zhivago, Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari, Triumph des Willens, Intolerance, and The Birth Of A Nation. I guess this is the "PC Version" of the list.

When you only have ten votes then something's got to give, so I guess a lot of good ones got left off. Considering all the movies ever made in the last 90+ years, and the fact that the critics and directors are from all over the world, just being mentioned is worth something, but "Intolerance" (good) and "Metropolis" did make the list.

Your right, I even listed Intolerance. And Metropolis is #27 (tied with, of all things Some Like It Hot).
The Birth Of A Nation is one of the most important films in history though. And it used to be listed among the top 10, before it was deemed "not politically correct".
