Subject: That 70's show is in dire straits....

Written By: Johnny Vega on 03/31/05 at 8:55 am

Well, now that Topher Grace has had a taste of starring/co-starring in a "big Hollywood" movie, I think it was "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton", he wants to opt out the show and not make it for an eighth season. The show could definitely go on without him because his character isn't the entire focus of the show, his basement is, but then Donna would have a small storyline and then you would have a four-character ensemble...

I thought everyone agreed this would be the last season anyway. The show has run out of ideas, and it's time for the actors to find other work. And for Ashton Kutcher to do infomercials in obscuruty. ::)

Well, they're only going to stop because Topher doesn't want to sign on and I would like one more season, perhaps Fez gets a steady girlfriend, Rhonda comes back and she's attractive, basically, get all of these past characters and stuff them into 20-something episodes...

It's not just Topher. It's the whole cast that wanted out. I would have loved an 8th season too, but only if they were as funny as the 2nd or 3rd season when they didn't rely on slapstick that much. Besides, they're all long on tooth anyway (too old to be convincing teenagers).

:( :( :( NO!!

I don't want this show to die. Is it really going off the air?? No no no. >:(

They can continue without Eric. Have him off and join the Army in the show, lol(sound familiar?). And have Donna stay behind(sound familiar again?). Theres still Kelso, Hyde, Jackie, and Fez. I agree with Johnny, it would be interesting to see Fez get a girlfriend finally.

There are still lots of possibilities for the show, I think. They just have to be creative about it.

Wilmer wanted out, but then he would be typecast.... I know that he is the reason that Mario Vazquez left, you just can't have two gay Latinos on FOX at once :o Saved by the Bell was the only show in recent memory that actually had the teenagers cast in their actual age range or even younger, Dustin Diamond was really 16 when everyone else was 18-19. Dawson's Creek had James Van Der Beek (is that even close to the right spelling...), portray a 15 year old when he was 24 and I fell for it all. The OC is even worse, Benjamin McKenzie is what, 26, and playing a 16-17 yr old? You can't really have teens portray teens in a drama, it could work in a sitcom like SBTB, but for a drama, you need someone who has had experience before, (Jesse McCartney is a prime example of a lack of experience), doing a drama.

I'm confused. Why wouldn't you want teens to play teens on a series? Is it because of the studies? Or that teenage viewers like older people playing teens? There are too many adults who should grow out of their roles and find more mature fare? You wouldn't have wanted Robin Williams to play a teenager even though he has played characters younger than teens?

I wouldn't want teens to play teens because the acting would be on par with that of a soap opera. Most Americans also aren't willing to have teens play teenagers on "dramatic" shows or even sitcoms for that matter, and I say this because you would have 13-17 year olds playing their ages on TV shows if it was wanted. Studies is one reason and also, someone who has already gone through the teen years can give a better portrayal although it lacks the realism that a "real" teenager would give on a show. Brittany Snow is a horrid actress, but because she is photogenic, she now has aspirations to star in "Hollywood" movies, probably ending up in the seedy part of town....

I have to agree the quality just hasn't been there for the past season or two.  The last few episodes I watched have been just blah.  I think they had a plenty long enough run, and probably should have even packed it in a year ago.

Most shows, like this one tend to lose it after it's 5th or 6th season (Friends, Seinfeld, Simpsons - although that was more 7-8th season etc). I reckon it's time to say goodbye  :(

the Simpsons though have managed to pull a stellar year every couple of years now though.  Two years ago they had a fantastic season.

I did however see the worst episode I've ever seen this year as part of the new season, the one with Marge and Moe running his bar together.  That was plain awful, no redeeming value whatsoever.

South Park is similar, it's had some fairly unremarkable years, but they still manage to pull a few episodes each season now that make it worthwhile to sit through the bad ones.  "Woodland Critter Christmas" was one of the funniest I've seen in two years.  Last week's with Kenny kept on life support was excellent for it's timing.

What about The OC? Mischa Barton is a real teen, and I can prove it. I know the guy who used to deal her coke  ;) (true story)

I think Ralph Machio was 40 in the last Karate Kid movie  ;D
