Subject: So This is the Future, eh?
Written By: Full_House_Fan on 03/11/05 at 5:53 pm
In the 90s, even the late 90s, I always thought of the Zero Decade as the (near) future. Not spaceport future, but still a bit futuristic.
The 2000s have disappointed me. SETI hasn't proven ET, we haven't been to Mars. Pretty lame if you ask me. DVDs are cool but come on, are they that much better than VHS? TV has even more violence on than the late 90s and we have the worst president since at least 1900.
Over in 90sland I am some others were discussing how one would feel if taken on a time machine from the late 90s to 2005. We figured the the 1999er would have some trouble getting it at first but to the 96er it was obviously the near future.
This decade's been lame. I think the last few years will be exciting though. 8)

All those movie ideas of what the future is like are always false, there's not going to some radical change in the way people live in 10 years. I don't expect any radical changes for 2010 or even 2015, there will be new technology and some different styles, etc., but nothing that's really drastic. I wouldn't say I'm disappointed with the '00s that much. DVDs are cool, but tapes did the job for years as well. Have things changed a lot since 1999 definitely not, but it is only 6 years ago, so that's to be expected.

Another thing the '90s gave us were national consumer electronics chain stores likes Best Buy, Circuit City, and Comp Usa, I remember when each of them opened up over here.

I don't think this decade is ALL about war, and what do you mean by history? Aren't you forgetting Vietnam between the 60s and 70s?

60s was History too. This decade isn't all about war. Just some it. A lot is revolution.

Well every decade can be about history, what history are you specifically referring to?

I know I've said this a hundred times, but why hasn't someone invented an affordable personal jetpack yet? I mean, come on! We're living in the year 2005! This is supposed to be the world of tomorrow! I want my jetpack already!!!

Personally, I think the internet has almost single-handedly changed/has the potential to change the way we do a lot of things. We only have to click what we want and we get it delivered within a day or two, we can speak to people all over the world in forums without a huge phone bill and the access to information of any kind now is incredible.

Aside from Vietnam...don't forget Korea, and WWII. There has always been war, not just now. The human race will continue to have wars until we learn to get along with one another regardless of our differences of opinions.
The 2000's really aren't all that bad.  Except, my drivers ed teacher promised that we would all be driving flying cars (think the Jetsons) by now. I want my flying car. :D

Maybe if I stick this Teamsters thing out for 20-30 years I could be a starship captain by the time I retire. (Of course, the way these knuckleheads in charge are running this world, I wouldn't be surprised if my spaceship ran on diesel.)

I think it'd be cool if some billionaire would come out and sponsor a racing series with nothing but vehicles that were either hybrids or ran on alternative fuels. This would definitely hasten the development of such vehicles--most technical advances in automobiles usually started out on race cars.

Well, every major company has a hybrid model now. And sales are steadily climbing.
And the continuing petroleom problems will hasten it more than anything. Although, you make a good point about racing driving forward progress in the automobile industry.
However, I think that eventually full-Hydrogen powered cars will be the thing, rather than electric/gas hybrids. It will take longer, but its going to happen. I know someone who's older brother works for an energy company, and he thinks that Hydrogren will become dominate within the next 30 years, perhaps by 2025.

Not necessarily false. I'm not exactly a sci-fi fan but like it if it's a good story. But look at all the old sci-fi's and you can see some ideas that sounded outrageous back then are realities now. Some were ridiculous but again there are some things that we have today that say 50's sci-fi's imagined. Remotes, micro-waves, and mono-rails to name a few. ;)

I've seen recently in China that they have come up with a robot that moves like a human. Scary,uh. Look at cloning, it was a far-fetched idea not some thirty years ago. :)

I think it was back in the 30s or so where there was a film that came out called Metropolis and it was all about what the year 2000 would be like.
of course it was way over the top,I think the story was about terrible robots invading the planet etc..

Minority Report is a really good film taking place in the future. It feels more organic and 'real, its really a way I could picture Washington D.C. in 50 years.
Blade Runner, I also felt was a more 'real' feeling film in the future.
Often times, films try to portray the future much too benevolently(Star Trek anyone?). Films like Blade Runner are good because people are still just people, the technology just changes.

The future is overrated. Remember "Lost in Space"? The original show's storyline started in (1997) They had the robot in the fictional 1997. Where were OUR robots in actual 1997? Grrrrrrrrr to the future.......grrrrrrr ???

I say 2020 things will be futuristic. And also, expect a MAJOR shift in attitude around 2012-2013.
Even 2004 was a changeful year. Now, in 2005, pop culture's at a low point as we find new things to replace the "1999" culture.

The Mayan Calendar supposedly has some strange and new, as well as big transitions after 12/21/2012
Apparently, we're supposed to change into more civil people....... :P

I just hope that if its true, it isn't anything for the worse..We've been through so much for the last 80 years with the Depression, Two world wars, the cold war, terrorism.. :(

I'm talking about the Mayan Calendar, but also it seems like the times shift every 15 years:
1967 - Summer of Love, hippy movement, peak of the 60s
1982 - IBM and explosion of the PC, stylistic change (also in 81 the Pope and President are nearly killed and live)
1997 - Music becomes more corporate, Internet boom peaks, change in atmosphere
2012 - ????
I see something big, even though my examples are probably ridiculous. :D

No they make sense. And you mention '67 was the summer of love, well back around 1952 was about the time rock n' roll was really building as a musical movement(but on the underground level, in clubs and stuff), it wouldn't be until 1954 that it really blew up nationally. Then again, the hippie movement ACTUALLY began in 1964(it didnt become nationally known until '67), and if you go 15 years back, to 1949, I THINK that is when the very first wave of what would be the "rock n roll" sound came in. Don't quote me though, I am not completely sure.
And if you consider that, go back another 15 years, and the mid 30s(34-37) was a time of change, and so were the years right after WWI(1919-1920). I dont know how far back this pattern will go..but you get the idea.

I'm pretty positive about it.  I heard many changes will happen then, such as alittle far out claims that we'll have a new human sense and master the mysterious 6th sense.  I heard that children born after 2012 will have the power of tele-kenesis, and telepathy.  We will become more intelligent in one night(12/21) and
we'll be another 7times smarter.  Crazy eh?  Some transitional (not all good) changes will be that Animals, domestic as well as wild will warn humans that they, once again, took their given ways of technology for granted and abused their gift.  It happened before.  Another is that our current technology will fail and we'll have to start over again at a stone-age level.  But who really knows, right?
