Subject: Reminder of what should appear here, what shouldn't

Written By: ChuckyG on 03/07/05 at 3:21 pm

I know 2000's/Current Events could be a large catchall, so this is just to clarify a little better what belongs here.

Belongs here:
Stuff dealing with contemporary events in pop culture, world events.

Doesn't belong here:
Stuff dealing with board members, such as personal events, avatars, general board related stuff.

An easy guide to follow:
If someone had never visited the site before, would the post make any sense to them?  If not, then please post it on the "Playful Penguin Place", which is a board designed specifically for members only stuff.

Please tell me there isn't gonna be a cleanup. Oh God, I can't lose so many posts again.

And also, can we keep the stuff we already have going if there isn't a cleanup? It's not like we don't discuss Culture and Events, but that's not all we do. This is like a "Playful Penguin Palace" for Guests. It's easily accessible because it's closer to the top of the page, and guests can post here. We'd lose people like Kyle, Guest, and Lazy Jessica. What about THEM? Are we just gonna leave them to DIE?  ;D

But seriously, I can understand wanting to keep some structure going, but it's not really interfering with the site's dynamic, is it? I can understand, maybe the battles of actors/actresses/avatars should go on the Board Games of Playful Palace, to keep some order going. But what about "Feel Any Way..." "What Song Are You Listening To..." "Morbid Thoughts..." and the ongoing, frequently front page things? Do they really affect the site so much when they're here or not?

Also, on a side note, people might be more eager to use the Playful Penguin palace if it was more easily accessible. People don't like to scroll so much, and this is a convieniet place to do things. Now, I'm no computer expert, so I don't know if this would affect the site or people's post counts or anything, but maybe if the Playful Penguin Palace was higher on the page, people would use it more. Just a thought. Thanks.

I only delete posts when they are offensive.    I did a cleanup, but only by moving posts to the appropriate place.

Part of the reason for the members only posting rule on that board, is to help encourage people to register to post.

I'm not sure I buy the scrolling argument.  Is it that hard for people to scroll a little further down the messageboard list? There's a drop down box with each board on it as well.

But seriously, I can understand wanting to keep some structure going, but it's not really interfering with the site's dynamic, is it? it is interferring a little bit, there was almost two full pages of updated topics in the 2000s board before the day was even half through.  Allowing one board to go off topic, encourages the other boards down the same path.

Also, on a side note, people might be more eager to use the Playful Penguin palace if it was more easily accessible. People don't like to scroll so much, and this is a convieniet place to do things. To be honest, the intention of the board is for discussion of popular culture and world events.  This type of stuff is allowed, but I'm not really going out of my way to promote those boards. Every messageboard with more than two discussion boards on it, tend to have those sections.  They aren't what makes the board's topics unique and tend to dilute what the site is about.

The most important reason though, is that a lot of people asked for these types of topics to be kept seperate from the main discussion areas.  If you want to read about pop culture stuff, you're not necessarily interested in topics that aren't related to that.  That's why the games have their own section.  That's why quizzes are seperated out.

yes, but I think I'd like to move the "The Feel Great, Good News Thread!" and "Feel Any Way, News of Any Form Thread" as well to the Penguin Place.  They seem to be more in keeping with the reason that board was created in the first place.

I kinda agree.. although i post in all manner of topics it can be a pest when you wanna see what is new and there are pages and pages and pages of new stuff and most of it really needen't be there.

Aw, do ya have to? I guess I can favorite it, but I loved the 2000s board so much. Quick access to the politics section, right at the middle-to-top of the main page, it was so convienient. And it'll take a lot of enforcing to move all the boards. I see why you're doing this, but it just seems like a lot of bother for a lot of people. Unless you're getting a good deal of complaints about this.

I haven't gotten any complaints yet, but in the past I have...  I try to fix these things before they become a problem.

It's too bad there isn't a feature in the user profiles to just display the boards you're interested in, or maybe even just rearrange the boards by your interests.  It shouldn't even be that hard to do really (from a coding point of view).  I've got too much on my plate already though to even think I could hack it out.

That'd be sweet, favorite boards or arranging. I guess I can favorite the boards, but so many people would come to my board when they were new because it was always up top in the past. A lot of people start going to the 2000s first, even if just to say we're the wrts decede in hestoree.  ;D

Another question, is the year 2000 considered to be part of the '90s, or the 00's.  I heard most so called "nerdy people" consider the year 2000 as part of the '90s, and the new millennium began on January 1, 2001 12:00:00 and whatever number of picoseconds after that  :P  Whatever!!!  To me, the millennium began in the year 2000, not 2001.  BTW, most 2000's (pre- 2005) pop culture started to kick in by 2001.  2000 is pretty much another 1999, like 2005 is now.

we don't generally moderate based on whether people will be offended by someone's idea.  Generally posts are deleted for being personal attacks, such as "Only an idiot like you would believe in abortion rights".  If someone reported a post that supported and didn't support abortion rights, because they disagreed with it, it wouldn't get deleted.  (unless of course it's not in the politics forum, where it clearly belongs).  If someone is posting sexually explicit pictures, those will get deleted.  If someone is posting graphic pictures of aborted fetuses, those will get removed as well.

Generally, we try to use US network television as the guiding rule.  If they won't do it, neither will we.  We do go a step further with the "no personal attacks" rule, since if you watch any "political" discussion in the past ten years, that's all they do.

Most of what gets removed is spam, personal attacks, and pictures that have no business on a family friendly (but not G rated) website.

HUH? This is one of those things that Capt. Kirk would say on Star Trek to make a robot's head explode, right? ;D

Either way. If a movie or music sucked in a year that ended with 90, or 00. It still sucked. If you come on this website claiming that Gigli, or Waterworld ruled. Than you will made fun of because your taste in movies obviously leaves a lot to be desired. Of course as long as everyone tags up on you and exposes your ignorance without actually attacking you :D

Huh?  Unless the filters are gone, you can't say the whole "s" word anyway.  The site automatically makes the word "sheesh".  The same with a**hole.  If you don't edit it manually, it becomes Ashcroft (very clever, I must add).  Most people will edit the word themselves before posting it.  No one posting uncensored profanity, at least not that I've seen.

Then check out the 'food' section page 1 with WHistledog's respose to the burger stack saying it looks like a s*** he just took or something like that with the whole word....

Hmmm.... no filter there...

Obviously the filter didn't catch that.  But you can't handle a cuss word?

No it's not the filter it's just that there are certain ways around the filter.  I won't post how to do it here, don't want to see a bunch of cuss words.

On another site I'm on, if you change the color of a letter in the word, the filter won't catch it.  I don't do that here, as it's easier to just type an asterisk.

What gives Chuck?

Unless I needed to contact the moderator for the particular site in question:

YOU state no vulgar or profanity is accepted yet in the FOOD section Whistledog uses the  whole 'S' word....Sister Morphine cleaned hers up previous to his..yet his remains.

I wrote you with no response back or from any moderator of that site...
whistle can say whatever..I thought it was on the shoulders of the moderators to KEEP IT KLEEN?

Wow!  What gives?  I am under the spotlight now for saying one little swear word?  ???

As one of the moderators for the FOOD board, I honestly do not see the problem with the word that Whistle used. He wasn't calling someone names and didn't use it to incite a riot or full scale attack. He was being silly is all. Personally, if he used the word defecation - his post would not have been as funny as it was!
It isn't the C word or the F word or the N word or the B word... I could go on and on...

Some of the filters were lifted earlier this year (or was it late last year?) because most people who use this board understand what can and can't be said. My son is on this board (14) and if he reads something that he doesn't agree with, he moves on to another topic - as in: he doesn't participate in the topic.

There are ways around filters like Carol said. Other people (myself included) have used the word with different spelling and have never gotten a single complaint. It is a pretty mild word compared to some others that are spelled differently - which you will also find throughout the board.

And I never received an email or pm about the posted word. ::)

Not only that, this particular thread is supposed to deal with stuff on THIS board, not on the food board. It even says so on the first page. :P

The filter isn't perfect.. I've seen "f--ked" and "f--ker" get in a few times, and once "motherf--ker" got in.

So you don't want decadeology here but you'll happily remove a thread that offers an off-site venue to discuss decadeology matters. How oddballed.

Simply offering a link to a decadeology site is in itself a discussion about decadeology and we will have none of that.  What is it that you people don't understand?

DECADEOLOGY IS STUPID!

I would totally allow it if people really would just go there and not come back, but history has proven that never happens.  the new "decadalogy" site never takes off and they just come back here to continue spewing their nonsense.

So far I've reported two spam posts and a post that added nothing to the "When Movies Sequels Start To Suck" posts.  I hate it when spam posts show up in a post because they don't add anything to the boards and it just takes up too much needed space for fun posts.
I know I should ignore it but sometimes I just can't help myself at all.  :) But this is a good time to remind people that spam and decadeology have no place here.

Exactly, and also someone selling something or an advertisement that shouldn't be on here either.

Also hijacking other people's posts to post useless topics, ie what happened in claybricks' Great Keyboard Songs of the 1970s And 80s post, shouldn't happen either because it can get you into a lot of trouble and gets others irritated to the point where they may act irrationally.  Although I don't think my reaction to that was that irrational I think that we would all just prefer not to have that happen because I was about ready to throw um internet punches and that wouldn't have been a wise thing to pretend to do.  8-P 8-P
