Subject: Why does music suck these days?

This rant and rave post is about investigations, interrogations, research, theories, and such about music and where music in today's society is going. The music industry is becoming very ill(not Beastie Boys "ill", but psych ward "ill").  Tell me your opinions on how music is perceived.  Music is in desparate need of its roots, I think, and the essance is burning to come back.  We need more talented people to rise up against the "devil" corperate music industry and influence fans with the love of music, not the money or "bling bling" it brings in every month.  Seriously, look at where we're going with the once wonderful gift we call music.  I want to know your thoughts and opinions, good or bad.  Thank you all very very much.

I don't think all 2000's music is bad. There are some good songs.
My faves from the 2000's are mostly "rock", such as The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Travis, The White Stripes, Keane, Placeboetc.
But I also like a very few pop songs and happy-punk ;)
But my favourite songs from the 2000's are J-pop 8)

Hell yes they are. But eventually, once you listen enough, you stop laughing and just appreciate the genius. You really do. No BS.

Simon Cowell said it best, "The best thing for the music industry at the moment would be for Michael Jackson to come back."
Trust me, by next week or the week after this trial will be over and Michael will be aqquited and vindicated. When he is aquitted, I promise you he will come back with some real music and show these youngsters how it's done. All it'll take is for Michael to come back for everyone to start appreciating melody and rhythm again.

I don't know how old you are but if you are old enopugh to remeber Thriller, Bad and Dangerous, you'll remember the hype about them. The world was in a frenzy. Never since Dangerous has there been a musical release that has caused such hype. Everytime Michael releases new music, it also inspires other artist to do better. Whether they do better with the intent of outselling him, or they do better out of pure inspiration, it don't matter. The thing is, the music industry is always at an all-time high, when Michael Jackson is around.

^What is it with the Beatles and Elvis? It's not like they're gifts from God, as great as they were/are.
Listen to some nuwave like Franz Ferdinand, and if you're adventurous go to www.rhymesayers.com and find underground hip hop. Good music is around, and today we have more choices. But yes Mainstream Rap sucks, but every generation has a crappy genre. 60s had Motown, 70s Glam, 80s Hair Metal, 90s Gangsta Rap, and 2000s Mainstream Rap.

It doesn't suck and I'm EXTREMLY tired of people saying "Music used to be so good back in -insert decade-" It's just as good as it ever was it just depends on what kind of music you like. And YES there really are many talented artists these days and not all of them are computers. :) P.S. Spread the love

Music of today doesn't have alot to say. What ever happened to raw emotion and feeling and inspirations and love and joy and anger and depression? I remember I used to listen to music and actually feel something inside of me. Have you ever experienced that tingling sensational that climbs up from your toes, through you stomach and into your heart? Most music of today just goes straight to the head. I wanna feel something when i lsiten to music. There have been some songs of late that give me a mild tingly feeling inside, but nothing great. When I listen to the build up to the chorus in Billie Jean, or American Pie, or Somebody To Love, or any great song from the 70's and 80's, I get a thumping sensation in my heart and shivers go up my spine and I feel like I'm about to explode. I get shivers down my spine, in the back of my nexk, I get all little tinglies in my chest, it's almost... no it IS better then sex!!

Oh no, I'm not saying that music was better back in ANY decade, or anything.  sheesh...music, through the years, had its good moments and bad moments.  I'm just saying how people are capitalizing in it so much and ruining the value of music.  Its like the whole revival period: when the 1980s was recycling the 1950s,when the 1990s recycling the 1970s, and the 2000s recycling the 1980s.  There's hardly any real honest talent out there because everyone's too busy reliving and cashing in on the past....like......totally commercial.  Not to contradict myself what I said about taking music back to the roots.  If one person has a style with a feel from, say...1973, then THAT's talent. Because it's old, new, hasn't been heard in a while, it would be original.  But if you have twenty other people doing the same style and that's conformity and mainstreaming.  :o Ugh...anyways music is such a complex part of our life, but as long as people listen to what they like and they are happy, then that's all that matters.

Well, the 50s and most of the 60s didn't have anything to do with anger(at least that you know of). Then again, you may have not of listened to any "blues" of the 40s and 50s. The 70s was the real first decade to promote angst and depression with punk.

There are many reasons why music generally suck these day's, but I'll just name a few. One thing, we are running out of songs to write, because everything else is taken. It seems like everytime I turn on that darn radio, certain artists are playing a "rip-off' from another persons' song. :D >:( For instance, Rich Girl by Gwen Stephani is just another rip of from the musical Fiddler on a Roof!! :D :D Another thing, everything is wit tha' style. Bling bling is a little more important than so called good music. :P That's all I have to say, and I hope yall' reply soon.

Music comes down to personal taste. Over the past week, I know somebody who likes hip-hop and I wanted to listen to her music. One CD I listened to was Kanye West and I thought it was alright (in a funny way). I like it when I approach new music and I get pleasantly surprised.
However, I can't relate to a lot of modern music. Does that mean it sucks? I'm not sure.

I don't think it sucks. I just don't think we can appreciate it AS much as other decades. I can appreciate SOME 80s, but not much. You people like more of it. I'm sure if you really tried, you could find something to appreciate about today's music, but not much. It's like that.

It's a misconception that I personally hate all modern music. I have trouble dealing with hip-hop but I enjoy some of the mainstream pop that is out there because it is more accessible to me.

Have you guys heard of Eskimo Joe. They are a new band and I think they are great. There is good music out there today, but not alot. Powderfinger are also a great band. The John Legend guy doesn't sound bad either. But for me, the only good music of the 2000's has either been new music from Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna and other veteran artists who have lasted since the 70's and 80's, or new artists who cover old songs from the 60's, 70's and 80's.

I'm not sure all music does suck these days, perhaps it's just that we don't get to hear the good stuff? I know it's slightly different in the US (probably even more mainstream), but in the UK, it only tends to be bland pap, that sells singles to teens, that gets any airplay. Alternative/ independent stuff seems to have been sidelined in favour of playing the Top 20 all day long.
We have some fairly good new bands in the charts, but again, I think you only get airplay if it's fairly bland music. I like The Zutons and Kaiser Chiefs, although I can't see the latter lasting very long...

Powderfinger are also a great band.
I remember seeing Powderfinger at the Livid festival in 1995 when they had never played a show outside of Brisbane. Now they are the biggest band in the country. I still have an EP of theirs called "Mr Kneebone" that I'm sure most of their newer fans have never even heard of.
Music doesn't suck any more today than it ever has. There's always been sucky music, manufactured hits, horrible cover versions. To find good music, you just need to get away from the mainstream. I don't listen to hip hop or urban beat stuff very much, and I can't stand poseurs like Chingy, Ja Rule and that ilk, but a little while ago I heard some underground hip hop stylin' stuff that blew my mind. The last time I listened to the radio was about seven weeks ago, and I don't even know what's on the Top 40.

Perhaps the pop/commercial music has evolved too much and the industry hasn't changed enough. I think the main reason why this garbage is produced is because people actually like it. About '99 it seemed DJs were going to take over the world...but then thank God for good old fashioned Rock and Roll...
