Since we're talking about radio music I'll say 1996.

I always sucked.
They always play the same hits (of past artists) a thousand times and does the same with current artists...the same songs for every few months...

2001. I think that's when they played more modern rap music like they do now.
I thought some of the new mllenium stuff was ok for a while, but this was when it really started sucking.
PS: I loved the grunge/alternative sound. 8)

I've ALWAYS avoided the "Fluff" crap but nowadays there's SO much of it, not to mention most Rap with the filth and hate they spew :P Thank God for Rock Stations...even though they are getting gobbled up by corporate snake, Clear Channel >:( No year in particular though...a little crap in each year has helped erode music radios quality :-\\

I hate to say it - I have a couple of years that really sucked. (I maybe off a little)
86-87 - New Wave Started to Die Down and Hair Bands Came to Town
90-91 - Hip Hop entered the airwaves and was everywhere - Thank god for Seattle Sound - since that was the only thing normal at that time.
96-97 - Pre-made Pop Bands came to town - NSYNC, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys - entered the market - and no one listened to my boys.
By the way - it stinks now - I am moving to Sirius - I am serious - lol.

I don't know, Howard. The early 90s are almost as old school as the late 80s to me when it comes to Rap. I don't think rap became New School till about 1997.

You're right. Radio jumped the shark when suits bought up the stations. In Maine, it took a long time for companies to buy and brand the stations. The last truely original self-owned station is 92 Moose in Augusta.

There was a BIG change in music 1993. Grunge was really being overplayed on the radio. But I was still diggin' it (like I was a part of it, instead of just an observer) until 1999.ÂÂ
1999 is when I felt myself, at age 23, 24 get too old for the youth culture and whatever was coming on in the radio.

Same here. I couldn't understand why everyone was taking notice of this Britney chick and the terrible pop music coming from the radio. By then, I had a child, so I really couldn't relate anymore.

2000-2001 b/c my ALL time favorite radio station was taken away!!! They played hits from he 80s, 90s and today. It was the best radio station EVER. They replaced it w/ some hard rock crap. (no offense to hard rock fans. I like hard rock too but this kind they play really sucks) Then this past summer my other favorite radio station which also played hits from the 80s, 90s and today was taken away and replaced with a hiphop station. Then again this year they took away my moms favortie oldies radio station.. Man, The radio sucks now.. They keep taking away good stations and replacing them w/ crappy ones!! :(

I hear ya. In Great Falls, Mont. they don't have any hip hop or modern rock stations. I havent been back there in nearly 4 years so it could be different now. Modern rock is good except the poppy crap and super hard stuff but mainstream hip hop sucks.
Do you know of Underground Rap Blondey? That's some good modern music :)

BUMP!
I'd consider "radio" music a little different than music in general (since they've always had a rep for overplaying) - with that in mind, I'd say 1997.
Isn't that about when Clear Channel came to be?
I've just noticed, in living in San Jose for 9 years now, the vast difference in some of these stations' playlists.
For instance, one of the "mix" stations that mostly plays current hits with some old stuff thrown in, used to (in 1996/7) play stuff like "Everytime you Go Away" from Paul Young, "I Wanna Know What Love is" from Foreigner, and "That's All" from Genesis.
Nowadays, aside from on 80's shows, I know they wouldn't touch songs like those with a 10-foot pole. They're probably too "soft" and/or too "old-ish" to fit with the modern pop/mainstream rap stuff they often have, whereas it still somewhat fit with mid 90's pop.
I could note a similar decline in rock stations too. Before 92.3 KSJO went under last year, they ALWAYS played "Crazy Train" and "Over the Mountain" but no other Ozzy songs almost ever. ::)
One thing EVERY station is even worse with is overplaying the same songs - you almost get the feeling they have a regular 200 songs or so, and the programmers just put them into a permanent random mix.
The best stations are the ones without an exact format - luckily there's still a few of those around (i.e. the ones that mix old and new rock equally). :)

1999 or 200 was the worst year of music. I do olike 80's and 90's music. Ever since 1999 with Britney Spears music hasn't been the same. I do like today's artists like rappers like, The Game, Kanye West, Baby Bash and Nas. I like Pop/R&b artists like Usher, Alicia Keys. With the exception of thosae artists I really don't care for anything. All the rock artists that are making hits now are carried over from the 90's: Velvet Revolver, Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, and weezer. The only good rock artists that are from this decade are Evansence and Queen of the Stone Age. thats basically it. Radio is in as bad as state as the American Auto Industry(General Motors just cust 25,000 jobs and Japanese Automaker Toyota is going to rasise prices just so the Domestic Big 3 can survive)and thats pretty bad. Although I have to say they are not Rock Artists the pop/rock band 3 Doors Down I though came out with one of the best songs of the past maybe 15 years of music with "Here Without You" in 2003 or 2004.

99 hands down. Number ones included Blue , S Club 7 and a whole host of other piles of sh*t. Novelty records and awful awful groups were at an all time high and it's the only year where I can't think of a single song that came out in it that I liked. Crap crappy crapness :P

probably the late 90's. I'D GO INTO A FIT OF RAGE EVERYTIME I heard those god awful spice girls.
And then '99 came along and then all they gave us was novelty junk like the freakin' Boomtang Boys up the rear. Yea sure Squeeze toy and Pictures were really cute songs, but hey, they got annoying after the 7000,000,000,000th time (which hit in a matter of minutes). And then this year is when all the talentless ultra-manufactured something-teen pop bimbos came out. And then there were the Nu-Wave ones like limp Bizkit who clearly had an identy crisis on whether they're rappers or headbangers.
Early 2000's things got worse. We were hit by a barrage of hip hop garbage like destiny's child, nelly, blu Cantrell Mary J Blige, and Eminem *shudders*. And they were played NON-STOP EVERYWHERE I WENT like a broken record It was to the point where I had people wanting to kill me because I couldn't shut up about how TERRIBLE THESE LOUSY HACKS WERE. And 2002 came along and all I heard was Avril Lavigne and that "get the party started" song by P!nk. Listening to these were about as fun as slamming your fingers in a car door.
And then a time of living hell was upon me. The year became 2003
The radio stations forgot that there were other songs in the world besides that "Seven Nation Army" Piece of crap. It was god-awful the first time I heard it. I don't even want to talk about how listening to it three times a day felt. In between their obsessions with this crap cake, the DJ's would put on some lite-grunge or so-called alternative rock. They were just as bad.
A few months later, I never listened to radio again. one of the best things to happen to me.

I'm still hooked on pop radio, lol. I usually just play my music on my computer, but it's the same material pretty much that's played on the stations I listen to. I listen to 96.5 which is today's hit music, 104.1 which is AC pop, and 92.3 which is the alternative station.

In the '90s, radio stations played everything. Today, they play Rap, Pop R&B, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey, Green Day, Nickelback, Weezer, The Killers, and that's about it. That's hardly even an exaggeration.
BTW I'd say 1999.

Since I work in radio, I'd say 1996 sucked it up the most...but more so because of de-regulation and the subsequent decline in the number of good jobs in the industry. As for the music, it's the same old thing, but that's nothing new.

There was like nothing in 1996. In what other year would the Macarena be a huge hit?
After 1996, there was teen pop, numetal, bling rap, and post-grunge, and every year since has been musically a combination of that.

Late 90's back when you couldn't hear an 80's song on the radio. Now radio stations have "All 80's weekends". Would you believe I still tape the shows on blank cassettes. :) :)

When we got too much info on the people/singers and learned how some were just street people and they would get into fights with other singers and busted for illegal activities...i.e.wife beating, drugs,...
In the days of the good music they may have done drugs out of view from the fans and now they are under a microscope as every little thing makes news ....so it might have been when the reporting became more involved....we'd see singers with bling and gold teeth and think of them as ridiculous....but I ramble on....
