And have bell bottoms and tie dye shirts come back?  I would rather have the 80's and 90's come back, than 60's.  ::)

Sorry I reacted harshly. I have a soft spot for 60s culture(especially late 60s/early 70s), my father whom I'm very close to was a hippie lol and 60s culture is something I associate with him. Plus growing up watching Nick@Nite most of my favorite shows were from the 60s. Don't worry though, no harm done.

The Roaring '20s. By 2007, megaphone crooning will be all the rage.

The '40's  8)

More swing, '40's clothing, and maybe pop pie hats.

Actually the '80's hair metal scene (Disco made a comeback in 1997, why not hair bands?  :D )  or '90's grunge.  :)

Music and fashion aside, some of the cars we're seeing produced take us right back to the muscle car era of the mid to late 60s, take a look at the 2005 Mustang and the Ford GT. Chrysler is reviving the Hemi name from its legendary engine and people are eating it up. Pontiac brought back the GTO name.  :)

I definitely think the 80s are slowly coming back out.  But I also think the 70's are still lying around, and even the early-mid 90s are popping back up.  I think, with the state the world's in lately, people are just more and more wanting to go back more than ever.  I'm almost 25, and I want to go back to the 90s.    Heck, I think it would be fun to go back to the 20's... even earlier.

I think we're sort of in the "20th Century's greatest hits" era now.

It's kinda crazy to bring back the 90s don't ya think?  I'm still of the opinion that a lot of the stuff around is still *kinda* like the LATE 90s anyway.

People have been saying the 80s are coming back since 1999.  While a few early 80s fashions have come back here and there, again the 80s have not come back in full force the way the 70s did in the 90s.  My prediction is that the 00s will drag along with this same late 90s style and then around 2009-2010 we will see pop culture change into something noticeably different from what we have been living in since 1996.

I think that we should start making new trends instead of dragging out old ones.

I also feel the 70's are coming back slowly with those big huge afros and the girsl wearing the clogs. ;D

I've been planning on addressing this, thanks for bringing it up. I think the complete lack of substance in today's culture is forcing groups of young people to redicover treasures from past decades. It isn't one single previous decade which is making a comeback, there are bits and pieces of all/most of them coming back all at once in isolated pockets of sub-culture. You can see it just here on this board, with almost everyone citing a different decade as the child of the big comeback.

This culture-void is something uniquely North American, for the youth in Europe has defined its 00's pup culture with club culture and electronic music. That isn't to say that there aren't other influences across the pond, like rap and rock or whatever, but in 20 years the club culture will be to Europe's 00's what the hippie culture is to America's 1960's. But in 20 years, how will American and Canadian kids define our 00's? Everyone will have a different answer then, just as everyone has a different answer right now. The only all-encompassing answer I can think of is "the age of mass-commercialisation." Whatever might have been the defining cultural movement of this decade was railroaded about ten years ago when all things cultural began looking like they were out of our (the masses') control and in the control of a select few board rooms. Every medium has been hijacked, from film, to books, to periodicals, to music. This is why the disillusioned youth are having to look backward to give their culture meaning. I see a lot of 70' and 80's music and dress, combined with 90's attitudes and a resurging interest the intellectual legacies of the 20's, 30's, and 60's. The literature of the Lost Generation is becoming increasingly significant once again for obvious cultural reasons, and the same is true for the 60's.

Here is an example of what I'm talking about...

Colleges and Universities today are packed with students who are forced to be there for economic intead of intellectual reasons. The job market demands a college degree for almost anything today, so the result is the learning institutions becoming flooded with people who are there only to earn a degree instead of being there to expand their intellectual horizons. No one asks questions, and apathy reigns. In respnse to this, there are small groups of students at presumably every institution who withdraw from the rest of the student body in order to pursue a higher education more like that of the 1960's, albeit in a much smaller environment, where open discourse and exchange of ideas is valued above high marks. This is an isolated example of a group of people being forced to borrow from the past.

What are some other thoughts on this? I am anxious to hear what others have to say.

A lot has changed since the 1990s. If you were to take a picture from 1997 and compare it to 2005, you'll see comparable differences. Not until 1999 did what we see "today's fashion" start to pick up. And "today's fashion," didn't become *mainstream* till about 2001/2002. Music has also changed dramatically since the 1990s.

1998 and 1999 were the precursors for the type of fashion and, to an extent, the type of music we have today...But if you thing about it...people in 1979 didn't dress like they did 1975....

I think every year has it's own specific fashion and music decade.

2000:  Stuff from 1999.
2001:  Real 2000's start kickin' in.
2002:  60's and 70's, and 90s.
2003:  70's and 80's
2004:  60's, 80's, and 90's.
2005:  ?  30's,50s,60's,90's, early 2000's.
2006:  60's and 90's.
2007:  New type of music and fashion!
2008:  Turn of the century and late 2000s.
2009:  Early-Mid 2000s and music of 2010's creeps in.
